Hi all,

I've got a well-known game downloaded, it came packe in 3 folders, CD1/2/3, and each folder has a bunch of evenly sized WinRar files.

Now, I'm at a loss; back in the good old days, there'd be s a nice program called 'setup.exe' which I'll start and which will prompt me for the necessary info. No such file.

Problem is; I don't know how to install. Just a bunch of files, and I don't know what to do from this point.

Your help is much appreciated!!!

Cheers,

Hey, amazingly enough, I saw someone do that very thing!! I don't know shit about computers, so bear with me. He downloaded the CD1/2/3 into his computer, then copied those onto blank CDs. Then, from the CDs, he installed the game ...it came up just exactly like it would have from store-bought game CDs. I was impressed enough to remember that.

is there a file with a msi extension? if so double click on it, and your program will install.
the files maybe compressed. if so you need the program to decompress them before installing.

edit
the files are compressed go here

Some RAR files can be parts of multi-volume sequences. Each of those files, that are evenly sized, have extensions .rar (the first volume), .r00, .r01, ..., or .part1.rar (the first volume), .part2.rar, ..., etc. To extract these volumes start execution from the first volume, .rar or .part1.rar.

References: http://www.rarlab.com/rar_file.htm

Special Note:
It's very common that after you extract the files you end up with .bin/.cue files that you can burn with Nero (http://www.nero.com)

Nero Guide to Burning .bin/.cue Files: http://www.techzonez.com/boogspics/burn_bin-cue_files_with_nero.zip

Alternative, instead of burning to CD's/DVD's you could extract and store the contents of these .bin/.cue files to your Hard Drive with Isobuster (http://www.isobuster.com/)

Let us know you could finally play your game

Yes, so go to foldler 1 and double click on the first archive file (lowest numbered). You can now extract the .ISO and other things like cue file if it has one and get nero to make you a CD. You'll also need a crack after installing as those discs won't count as the originals.

Another sexy idea is to install a program called 'Demon Tools' which takes an ISO file (or any DVD/CD image file) and makes a fake CD drive in your 'my computer' drive list.

or get a program called "alcohol 120" - funny name, but like daemon tools you use it to "MOUNT" cd data called "IMAGE" files - to a imitation cd drive, so you can use the data

And 7zip can open rar files without nagging you to register it.

You may also want to consider buying the game. Surprisingly, when you go through legal channels, none of the silly rar or download issues are there.

Good one AntonK. Plenty of places on the web to discuss these "questionable activities". Maybe Sciforums shouldn't be one of them.

we're discussing an open source game ;)

BUY software? I didn't accumulate my wealth by making unnecessary purchases. As for that stuff about banning P2P talk, tell that bullshit to the tourists.

I downloaded Doom III from the emule network. Feel gypped? I'll use vaseline.

As Blue mentioned the topic could be an Opensource game or a Beta, however I believe Sciforums isn't about to giving into the illegal downloading of copyrighted material so no more suggestions about which programs to run things with no-cd's, which drive emulators to use or how when he finds that the program probably uses Starforce4 that currently you'd have to unattach harddrives, switch your computer on/off 3 time while repeating the words "I want to frag".

Such games as www.freeallegiance.org are the sorts that you might download of get and have to go through alsorts of trouble to unpack.
(History of the game was that it was made by Microsoft and released too early, which meant it contained lots of bugs and was one of MS's game flops. however some people liked it and developed a community around it, eventually MS released the sourcecode to them to continue debugging the game etc)

Also if you've pirated a game that done by a small english games developer company and backed by someone like Eidos, just note over the past 5 years, two distinguished companies both went bankrupt. Was it buggy games? Lack of support on larger projects? biting off too much to chew? or because their products didn't make the publishing giant enough money that they nipped their wallet up tight?

Just remember, Every copied game you copy or Distribute, a Games Developer dies. So Spare the developers, buy a game (at least when it's at budget retail)

I use a program called WINRAR. I don't know if this will help you or not.

Fuck the developers. I've worked next to plenty of the assholes and they should all be ordered to document their work, zipmail it to New Delhi, then taken out the back and fucking shot.

The price of piracy is included in the price, as is the price of that fucking happy meal they ate at lunch. I don't mind the guys who write the code that powers my software eating at McDonalds once a month, but when they start drinking a glass of wine every week, I'm sorry, but it's fucking outsource time.

Oh, and by the way, the guys who write CRACK software are also developers...maybe you should spare your little sermon for those guys who are stabbing their brethren in the back.

If you're so worried about their standard of living, go to Signs 'R' Us and get a few hundred 3'x2' Correx panels printed up, with the words, "Will code for food".

I haven't manually messed with RARs in a long time since the DOS days, but if there's no auto-installer program, you can try this command, if it still works, heh:

rar x -v -y [first rar file name] [to the directory you want]

ex:

rar x -v -y c:\junk\doomrar.001 c:\games\

- N
