I need some help finding a book my fifth grade teacher read me. Hopefully I am not too vague on my description.
The book took place at the end of the Oregon trail, main character is a young boy who, with his friend gets kidnapped by native Americans. The friend gets killed, but the main boy goes on to become the chiefs adopted son. Most of the book takes place when he is with his adopted people. He eventually runs back home when he is about 20, I think, and lives happily ever after, I guess.
For some reason I still remember this book and would like to re-read it, no matter what the reading level.
Any help would be appreciated. Thanks.
Can you tell us anything more?
• Character names?
• What year were you in fifth grade?
• Was it a "children's" or "young reader's" book?
• Do you recall if it was illustrated?
• Do you know if the story was "new" when you heard it, or if it is a longtime classic?
• Do you recall if it is a true story?
I'm trying to Google it, but none of the terms I'm picking out of your post for a search are specific enough; I'm still just swinging a butter knife at a jungle.
The first thing that leapt to mind was Richter's A Light in the Forest, but as I recall, that story is set somewhere well to the east of the Oregon territory.

I would have been in 5th grade in 1998. Only character I remember is a Native American named Rabbit. I believe it would have been a young readers book, but thats just a guess. I don't think it was illustrated, and I really don't know if it was a true story.
Some other facts I just remembered if they help at all- There was some kind of "coming to age ceremony" that some other tribes came to attend as well. once he passed his test he was to marry the chiefs daughter and that is when he ran back home. And when he was young he was hit in the head with an ax making a large scar, that was how his parents recognized him when he returned home.
If any of this info helps I will be surprised, so if there is anything else let me know. And if your still going to be swinging a butter knife in the jungle, its not that important.
Thanks

Thanks for the link but It looks like if its going to help me I need more info about the book than I know. But thanks for posting it, I will use it in the future. This is just a shot in the dark to see if anyone had heard of the book, I wont be too disapointed if nothing shows up.
