View Full Version : Help!!! I'm in high school!!!

Would a two hour saturday detention due to an unexcused absence commonly result in it leaving some trace on your permanent record? Please tell me the situation in your high schools. I took off in the middle of class (we weren't doing anything, sorta like studyhall) forgetting to tell the teacher. I came back after 25 min. Our periods are a wee bit less than 50. She marked me unexcused!!! YARRGHH!!! It's not like I was out smoking, I just took off to play some random games of chess because it was sooo boring in class...

What do you do in detention? Study? Do cleanup work? Smoke? Murder? Rape? Destroy? Sack? Pillage?

I need some guidance here. Is it worth going through the effort to try get that unexcused removed? Because our school gives out 2 hr Sat detention, and "referral submitted to grade level admin" for the first unexcused absence to class. I wonder if that's bad.

And I'm a senior in second semester, for fucking sakes! I wouldn't care a bit about this, except for the fact that I have no experience with this. I have no idea why I took off. I'm not admitting it's wrong, there should only be regulation of students leaving school or coming to school late, students should be free to spend their time in school.

So can someone answer my question? Is it bad for your "permanent record"?

"Detention"...? In high school?? Detention!?!?!?:bugeye:
What the heck...

I though we would go to school to learn... a detention seems as if school was an obligation. It seems as if you were like a prisioner... that's really stupid. Is that what "we" call "freedom" and "democracy"...???

And in high school!?!? I guess we are supposed to be adult enough to know the consequence of our acts! That's simply stupid! Treat us like... criminals...!

That's really disapointing...

Oh... and I have no idea Zero. I never went to detention since none of my schools have such thing... thank God.

Cheer up. Think about life... philosophise (if there is such word...:bugeye: )

Don't panic Zero... I'm sure you can find a way to change the situation. It is your ONLY time anyways. If you get condemned for that, then there is a SERIOUS problem with your educational system...

detentions an experience and should be regarded as benifical whether you like it (then you should experience it again) or you dont (then you shouldnt skip class to play chess or whateva). Anyway I dont think 1 2hr detention will stop you getting to college but dont make a habit of it (thats unless you like failing getting into college). Anyway value the opportunty to do something different there is thousands of people across the world who dont and they are lesser people for it. :m:

Does 2hr detention leave anything in your record? What do you do during detention? I need answers to these two questions. Thanks to those who answered frankly.

I seriously doubt that your school will put a detention on your record. And believe me, no college would care if they did.:m:

It's a good thing, I liked your quote so I put it in my sig.:)

One detention on somebody's record MIGHT have made a difference in college admission when I was in high school - 45 years ago. Even then if the rest of your record was exemplary and this was clearly an isolated incident, the admissions officer would give you a chance to explain it. If you came across as responsible, contrite, and intelligent, and it wasn't a Baptist college, you'd probably be forgiven.

Today? They'd probably think there was something wrong with you if you hadn't butted heads with "the system" once or twice.

I'm no fan of Bill Gates, but he was right on when he said, "Four years of high school is enough boredom for any one lifetime."

If I were you I'd be more concerned with the fact that I lost track of the time so easily. Depending on your choice of career, that lapse of personal discipline could do far more damage to your life's work than a trivial blot on your high school transcript.

Make sure you get a really nice watch for graduation!

Uh, if I told them I strolled out of the middle of an unproductive class period to play chess with friends? :D

I have absolutely nothing on my record regarding drugs, crime, etc so I think I'll easily convince people I wasn't out smoking.

Hm I wonder if I should pride myself on my quote...

So I'm alright then? No cancellation of offers of college admission? Like Harvard (ha ha like I'd make it anyway) or UPenn or Cornell, etc?

Zero, dude, chill. No, it's not going to kill your college admissions.

As for what to do during detention, it's obvious:

Spray paint the Anarchy logo on all the lockers. Duh. :m:

When I was in highschool, they tricked us into getting rid of the lockers. We had a vote, everyone voted yes because we were promised a home set of books as well as a shared class set. ha ha never hapened.

My dad cussed out the pricipal several times when i got kicked out of school and I managed to get into college.....

better practice with with pentagrams first! ( defacing school property , of course)!

Sorry, can't help you. At my high school, they didn't give dententions past grade 9 (I'd seen it on TV, thought it was made up. Guess not) and I would usually show up to class, tell the teacher I was going to go study in the library, and then head to a friends house. Plus manage to get an extension on writing tests. :p
Damn I miss high school!!

Cool down!

I speant more time in the detention room then in my class room and I got accepted to my top univeristy in January (with an 80% avg. so not stellar marks like you prolly have)

i agree that they're prolly just gonna tell your principle

and as for what you do.......bring a book to read, a cd player, and hmwk, then pretend like you're doing it while actually doddling on the desk! have fun!

btw it seems wrong that they can give 2 hours on a sat......our were always an hour after school

EvelinaAnville
02-16-03, 10:47 PM
That 2 hours on Saturday sounds like the Saturday Work punishment at one of the high schools I work at. I used to watch the kids who missed saturday work. They had to come spend all day with me, in silence (called In School Suspension--they use it so they don't have to kick the kid off campus and thus lose the money the student brings in for that day). It was torture. I hated it. I felt like a traitor, and I was. I bought books for them and played books on tape. In the last hour I let them talk all they wanted. It was funny to hear the things they would talk about thinking I did not understand or hear! The weird thing was that quite a few of the kids in there, the ones who came a lot, said they would rather spend all day in that horrible situation than go to 3 hours of saturday work. One kid even asked if he could come to in school suspension even though he did not have it! Poor boy.

Anyway, Zero, it does not matter. A clerk would probably forget to put it in the computer anyway, even if colleges looked at stuff like that. I agree with someone else who said they would probably wonder if you did not have something on your record. They might think you are a serial killer, or something :D

Sue them!!!

Tell the judge that you have been wrongly marked as "unexcused absent" because you had a valid excuse: the class was sooooo utterly boring that you just needed to get out and smoke some crack in the hallway.

Claim damages done to your mental constitution and all the money you are missing out because this bad track record eliminates all changes of that future career you were going to have...

Oh. What exactly is a "referral"? And so no one can find out about my detention then? (I haven't actually gotten it yet, am going through proper threads to get rid of it)

EvelinaAnville
02-17-03, 06:54 PM
A referrel is the form the teacher uses when she/he wants you sent to the dean. Detentions usually come first, then referrels to the dean for not serving them. Sounds like your school clamps down hard on first time offenders. Your teacher must have been pissed. You can also get a referrel to your counselor.

Xev
02-17-03, 07:20 PM
Oh. What exactly is a "referral"?

It's so they can decide how to torture you.
Usually they use the rack, although since it is your first time, they might be gentle and use thumbscrews.

Zero
02-17-03, 07:55 PM
It says, "2 hour sat detention; teacher assigned; referral submitted to grade level administrator"...

They'll probably rape you too.
(Sorry, I been reading de Sade too much)

No, dude, serious like - referrel means that somebody will probably chew you out, and that'll be the end of it.

Oh, and you'll likely be branded on your left shoulder with a "D" as well....

Zero
02-17-03, 08:12 PM

Xev
02-17-03, 08:23 PM
Sure:

"The offender known as "Zero" is to report to us on Saturday. We will drug him with Rohypnol, and sell him into slavery. When he wakes up, he will be in a Malaysian sweatshop, doomed to spend the rest of his life making Nikes"

But don't worry, Zero, I'll buy your freedom. You'll just have to pre-rinse my dishes and load them into the dishwasher for the rest of your life. Or I'll prostitute you to my girlfriends, I haven't decided yet.

"2 hour sat detention; teacher assigned; referral submitted to grade level administrator"..."

You'll have 2 hours of detention on saturday, the teacher who will supervise your detention has been chosen (sometimes they make you do work while you have detention) and the whole incident has been noted by the person who supervises the kids in your grade level.

I should think, at least.

Dude, chill. College is mostly SAT scores and admissions essays. One little detention likely won't hurt you at all.

EvelinaAnville
02-17-03, 08:27 PM
Note: I think "teacher assigned" means that the teacher assigned the detention. Teachers usually assign after school detentions, not the harder punishments. Those are left to the dean (or whatever he/she/it is called in that particular school).

Detention is worthless dude. Just go for the two hours. It is on your permanent record as an absence, but not as anything else. Dont worry about it. My friend has 14 absences in ONE class, and he isnt getting into shit for it. As long as your grades are decent and you have a decent record, you are completely in the clear.

Don't worry about it Zero. Keep your grades up, as they WILL follow you. If anyone should mention it as an issue in college, ask them if they were ever young and made mistakes.

You should know that a lot of folks with "problem backgrounds" also made some of the best of scholars. Seems they were able to think outside the box, so to say. To see solutions where others only saw problems.
