On my computer I can't play any games because after installing a new cd drive it so turns out that directx is missing several files it needs to work. I can use the dxdiag program so I will list what is missing here:

When looking at the first tab of the dxdiag screen, 'Help, it says at the bottom:

DirectX Version (not found)

Files Missing:

ddraw.dll
ddrawex.dll
ddhelp.exe
dxapi.sys
d3drm.ddl
dplayx.dll
dpmodemx.dll
dpwsocksx.dll
dplaysvr.exe
dsound.dll
dsound.vxd
dinput.dll
dinput.vxd
vjoyd.vxd
msanalog.vxd
joy.cpl
gcdef.dll
gchand.dll
dxsetup.exe
dsetup.dll
dsetup16.dll
dsetup32.dll

Then, on the notes section of 'DirectX Files' it says:
Several files (ddraw.dll, ddrawex.dll, ddhelp.exe, etc.) are missing! You should reinstall Directx to put them on your system.

How do I reinstall Directx?? I've tried getting the file off of various game cd's but whenever I tell them to install it flashes the progress bar for a microsecond then says that the installation is complete (this is with multiple cd's). What should I do? I had a virus recently but it was removed. It seems very likely that the trouble started when we got the virus.

First you should remove all signs of the previous directx install. registry&files. You can search the i-net for directx removing progs. They all are full of gliches, but at least they contain list of all the files which are relevant to directx. delete those files from dos. delete registry entries. and then install the new directx

p.s. I had the same prob with directx 8.1 beta (which wasn't said it was beta) . it screwed up my system, so I had to find ways to unistall it. Nowadays directx really integrates with your system so it is almost impossible to remove it.

I succeeded after two days of research and work

Good Luck-> it's the best you can have now.

of course you can always format your os drive

I did try google and all of the relevant results said that there was a risk involved and that you should proceed only as a last result. Right now I'm dl the latest version of directx, 8.1a, hopefully that will work. If not I'm at the official site right now so I can check out their tech support. Then, I might have to call f*cking gateway again.....
