Headache Relief & Prevention

    I get headaches. A lot. Sometimes migraines. In fact, I'm attempting to fight off a headache as I type this.

    Does anyone know any good ways to prevent headaches from occurring or to fight them off when you get them? I'm hoping for suggestions that don't involve medication. I have pills for my migraines (and they're bad-ass) and usually take Alleve for regular headaches, but I figure it's not good for my body to have to pump it full of pain pills several times per week.

    Anyway...I had to take some Alleve for the headache I have at the moment. Now I'm going to log off the internet, lay down and try to sleep this off.

    Thanks in advance for any suggestions.

    Have someone massage your eye balls, the best way is for them to come from above your head as you lie on your back. Do this every day for between 10-30 minutes or at least a few times a week. You cant do it yourself, it doesnt seem to work that way too good.

    One reason for headaches can be sleeping in a drafty place. Seal off the windows, cover them with a blanket for the night and tuck it in, wear a night cap, place your bed away from windows and doors or any other source of draft.

    Dehydration is also a common cause of headaches.

    Stress can be caused by many things. Sometimes there's a constricted blood vessel in your head and that causes migraines usually, do you get migraines? Stress is another problem that causes headaches and you need to find ways to relax more while you are becoming stresses out. Some people smoke pot while others drink liqueur and even more meditate during the day to relieve the tension that builds up. Hope this has helped.:shrug:

    Yeah, I know I need to be drinking less soda and more water.

    How does sleeping in drafty places cause headaches? I've never heard that before.

    To be honest, I'm not much of a drinker and I don't use drugs. Meditation might be a good idea. Or maybe even yoga. :shrug:

    And, yeah, I definitely get migraines. Those suck.

    This product is very inexpensive at Walmart and it is very effective.
    I used to get disabling migraine headaches and would have to go to the doctor for a shot. But the shot made me too sleepy to function.

    I started taking Excedrine for Migraines when I would feel one coming on. In 20 minutes the headache would be gone. Plus there are no side effects that the shot would present.

    Fortunately, I rarely get a headache any more, so I think this medicine cured me! Also, it's imparative you drink more water. If you wake up with a migraine, it means you have dehydrated while you were sleeping. A migraine can be triggered when your vital organs aren't properly hydrated.

    For some people, it does. I am not sure why.
    So does sitting or otherwise being still in a drafty place.

    My girlfriend gets headaches/migraines when bad weather moves in. I think it may have something to do with pressure changes. But obviously weather is only an aggravating factor, not the underlying cause. Medications only address the symptom, not the cause. I think you should systematically alter your diet because most likely it is due to foods you are eating. You might also consider getting any metal fillings removed from your mouth as well. Also, do you have any other health concerns at all? The migraines could be related to that.

    You gave very good information about headache. here is some more information about it.The occurrence of common migraine may be reduced in high-risk people who avoid factors that have been associated with previous migraine. Preventive (prophylactic) medications may be advised for some people. The frequency of migraine may be lessened by avoiding triggers. It is useful to keep a headache journal, recording the particulars and noting

    possible triggers for each attack. Specific measures which may help include:
    # Eating at regular times, and not skipping meals
    # Reducing the use of caffeine and pain-relievers
    # Restricting physical exertion, especially on hot days
    # Keeping regular sleep hours, but not oversleeping
    # Managing time to avoid stress at work and home

    Some drugs can be used for migraine prevention, including specific members of these drug classes:
    # Beta blockers
    # Tricyclic antidepressants
    # Calcium channel blockers
    # Anticonvulsants
    # Prozac
    # Monoamine oxidase inhibitors (MAO)
    # Serotonin antagonists

    For most patients, preventive drug therapy is not an appropriate option, since it requires continued use of powerful drugs. However, for women whose migraines coincide with the menstrual period, limited preventive treatment may be effective. Since these drugs are appropriate for patients with other medical conditions, the decision to prescribe them for migraine may be influenced by expected benefit elsewhere.

    I used to get migraines a lot in my early and mid teens. Some foods would start them off, like eggs (I could eat one, and be fine, two, and I was in trouble) and dark chocolate. A little milk chocolate was OK.

    I was prescribed 'Stemetil' which allegedly would settle my stomach (I always threw up at the onset of the headache.) and also had some Panadol for pain relief. Pointless taking either until I'd thrown up, so I had to wait for the migraine to start, and then I just gave up taking them altogether, as they took an hour to kick in, the migraines usually only lasted for a couple of hours.

    So I used to go to my room, put a damp washcloth on my forehead, and not think about the pain. Think about breathing, my heartbeat, relaxing, and trying to get to sleep. Usually that worked.

    As to avoiding them, or stopping them happen, well, look for common triggers, being tired, dehydrated, too long in bright lights/noise, and see if you can eliminate those situations. Your hearing might be more sensitive than you know too, so try and go to a room with no electronic equipment in it. When I was younger, before countless heavy metal concerts took the edge off my range, I could hear if an extension lead was plugged into a wall socket, from the slight buzz it made. I had to turn off the wall sockets to get to sleep sometimes.

    not enough water?? i try to have 2L a day.
    your back or neck might be out??

    i would try to stay away from medication...or atleast only use it as a last resort.

    hope you feel better.
