Once the download is complete and I open the file, it says that the archive is an unknown format. It is a .tar file, so I went to download the tar program @ GNU mirror, but I can't open that either. It says that I would need seven zip, so I went and downloaded that, and it is successefully installed now, but I still cant use the other programs.

How do I message you on aim? I do not know what aim is, sorry fafnir, I really don't know what the hell I am doing. But I sure would like to get XviD up and running, because I have like 10 movies that uses this type of codec, and I am unable to view them. I would really apreciate it if you would walk me through the process.

I find most of the time that the usual reason why a Movie that says it's one thing but does play is purely because of the Codecs. Usually the actual images and the Audio are two layers that are encoded differently, and if the program your attempting to view it in doesn't have the right codec it can mean either the movie won't play or you won't have sound.

The simplest fix usually is just to download the correct codec for the movie. Then you can pretty much use a Divx player, DVD player software or Media player to actually play the film because the codec does the work.

Kazaa Lite also has a comprehensive codec pack and you can use a certain program that comes with it (forgot the name) to find out what codec is required for a movie.

Use WinRAR for .tar files - winrar is what we professionals use ;)

yes, i have winrar, and kazaa lite. And I have gotten XviD to install properly, thank you all. But the movies still won't play. It says file corrupt or unknown file type or something like that.

I have a bigger problem now though, I just downloaded DVD Shrink, and am trying to get it to work. When I hit the back up button, it begins to transfer the information off of the encrypted dvd onto my dvd-r disc, but about a minute into it I get the message "DVD Shrink encountered an error and cannot continue. Programming error - exception occorred." What do I do?

the last thing u should do is to install a codec pack not knowing what codecs are in it. Kazaa Lite is probably the most decent pack out there, but still I wouldn't recommend it.

Anyway, now most XviD movies comes with AC3 audio in it, which requires the AC3Filter to be configured in your system. So it's most likely that you're files are using it too, unless you're defenite that it's mp3 or some other format. Use something like GSpot to extract the info if u need to.

Again, are you trying to view them or burn them to discs? XviD movies are encoded not encrypted. So what do you mean by encrypted dvd?

AC3 usually just means you can't hear the sound but can still see the visuals. Plus I still notice that there are the occasional stutters with the filter where the two layers (Visual and Audio) attempt to stay in sync.

As for DVD's, you've probably come across something known at Anti-Piracy Protection if you are copying a DVD thats a retail one.
I can't go into great details for how to get around Protection because 1: it's illegal, 2: It's very indepth since those protection methods change every year causing us all into going out and buying new equipment because of the new protection methods being incompatible with older hardware.

There are sites out there that cover information on the copyright protection, however I would suggest that if anyone mentions such sites they also mention that the information is meant for "Educative purposes", which isn't a nudge nudge wink wink way of getting around copyrights but a way for people that are attempting to develop better protection understanding the current protections available.
