View Full Version : Has geeks become kewl?
My Sexy Blue Feet 11-27-04, 02:55 AM In our modern society of computers and science, has science become accepted as kewl?
Cause 20 years ago geek and cool were opposites.
Your thoughts.....
Love , Sexy Blue
ecclesiastes 11-27-04, 03:04 AM Yeah i guess people have finally got that to be intelligent and tech-savvy is really cool....
Looking good and being a geek don't automatically exclude themselves
My Sexy Blue Feet 11-27-04, 03:23 AM i wonder if it's just a phase our society is going through, or if people are beginning to accept intellegence
vslayer 11-27-04, 03:47 AM intelligence is an object of great envy to the stupid masses, we will always be excluded by the majority
The mushroom speaks the truth!
Geekdom will always be shuned by the masses but we do wield greater respect than before.
Dreamwalker 11-27-04, 04:34 AM Mmh, perhaps geeks have more power nowadays, after all, computers are ever present in our every day life and many jobs depend on them. If those computers are not working, you need a geek to fix it.
vslayer 11-27-04, 05:29 AM i am a mushroom?? thats new... but would explain a lot. :P
we have power but we are not cool
Logically Unsound 11-27-04, 05:49 AM well, to put this into a practial sense:
im cool, and intelligent.
therefore, cooldom = intelligence!!!
Dilbert 11-27-04, 06:59 AM thats logically unsound. :)
nah, cool and geek are not exactly synonyms. But who is to say that a geek cannot be cool. I am intelligent but i am still respected and a good friend of "others" :) that are not as gifted.
But i guess that my personallity is that great! ;) And the rest of you are probably not cool. j/K
Starthane Xyzth 11-27-04, 07:10 AM If you define a "geek" as someone who is very knowledgeable about computers &/or science, then why the f*@k can they not also be cool? If one's sexual successes are the measuring rod of coolness... a guy who can charm a girl, treat her to expensive evenings out on self-employed IT earnings, make intelligent and well-informed conversation, AND do her any dislegitimate online favour she desires, may well tend to score more than some willfully ignorant Fonz-a-like who thinks only about his image.
Not to mention that Internet addicts have access to any number of matchmaking sites..
Closet Philosopher 11-27-04, 07:53 AM From the female perspective, male geeks are cool if they look cool and act cool. They also will usually make a lot of $$$ so that makes them even more attractive in a way. I have always gone out with intelligent guys (I dumped the dumb ones right away) and they are cool to have a conversation with. I guess cool and computers can go together now.
TruthSeeker 11-27-04, 07:33 PM Huuumm... welll... When I look around, I still see a lot of people thinking that being drunk or high is what is really cool. So... yeah.... if you have any statistics proving otherwise, that would be great. It would give me hope for this world....
On the other hand... I'm in Canada... :D:D

Do you want cool in centigrade or fahrenheit?
no-
the geek populace is changing. There are a greater number of self-respecting 'cool' geeks.
The geek look- horn rimmed glasses, cardigan, casual - is completely seperate from geek culture. Putting geekwear on may be stylish, but true geek comes from within.
an>roid.v2 11-28-04, 12:24 AM When does one know -- I mean "know" -- that one is a geek? Thermometerorsomething? Sounds reeeealllly com-pli-CATE-ed.
One does not know directly. In fact most geeks are in constant denial and learn of their geekhood from people telling them that they are.
I know a number of geeks who are complete wiggers.
lostmind 11-28-04, 12:32 AM When does one know -- I mean "know" -- that one is a geek? Thermometerorsomething? Sounds reeeealllly com-pli-CATE-ed.
You know when your on a date and you want to talk about p4's vs. amds and such. :D :D
lostmind 11-28-04, 12:33 AM One does not know directly. In fact most geeks are in constant denial and learn of their geekhood from people telling them that they are.

Whats a wigger? (now you know I'm a geek)
an>roid.v2 11-28-04, 12:44 AM Xerxes: One does not know directly. In fact most geeks are in constant denial and learn of their geekhood from people telling them that they are.So that's a definition: to be incapable of "placing" oneself in the infrastructure hence not being capable of predicting one's actions? How... uncool.
Na -- (and if some geek here could look it up for me) "cool" is to be above the fray -- and to be cool about it.
I think thats a good way of putting it, ad>roid.v2. But to rephrase, 'they can't predict how others will react to their actions' because its natural to them.
lostmind,
A wigger is a person thats thinks they're cool and walks the walk, so to speak, but really isn't.
an>roid.v2 11-28-04, 01:19 AM Yeah -- a wigger (new word for me). Lots of "wiggers" around.
I think of them as bores.
But... a "cool" person doesn't necessarily mean that the person is "technically" agile. I recall looking at picts of war-rampaged communities lost in a heave of desperation and spotting an isolated individual, hidden in a cornor, totally aware of everything, yet inclosed within him/herself; you could just sense the entire chaotic drama calmly in the person's mien... and with downcast eyes, and upheld shoulders, and repressed anger/sadness/futility, I thought... yeah, that guy's cool -- wish I could meet him, and discuss the drama of... horrible death.
an>roid.v2 11-28-04, 01:44 AM BUT -- but cool in cosmopolitan town is aalso to be sexy.
oh and a cool person, IMO: :)
somebody who is secure in their ways. Calm and easygoing. Like android said, they don't have to be 'technically agile'.
an>roid.v2 11-28-04, 02:09 AM Pixel is sexy -- wonder if *that* *grin* *flips hair* had anything to do with it... (damn, they bloody locked the thread!!! Can you believe it? How uncool.
Starthane Xyzth 11-28-04, 06:12 AM A wigger is a person thats thinks they're cool and walks the walk, so to speak, but really isn't.
Don't you really mean: a wigger is a white person who trys to act black? A gangsta-rappa wannabe?
The word, after all, is derived from white nigger...(OK, moderators, censure me if you like).
Or, I suppose the "wannabe" aspect ended when Eminem appeared...
ahhhh...that would make sense.
I thought it was a modification of 'wig' with an er suffix. But I apply the term to all wannabes, not just gangsters.
The biggest wigger I ever knew was actually asian. A Yigger?
outsidethebox 11-28-04, 09:07 PM wigger is a white.... N***** ya know what im sayin? theres a few where i go to school... its an interesting consept.
outsidethebox 11-28-04, 09:13 PM man... I hate/love highschool... the thing about it is... how do i know what to appreciate and what not to? i've been doing this for 5 years (including middle school, only because mine was with the same kids im with now, and they haven't changed since then, really....)
rainbow__princess_4 11-30-04, 03:55 AM "computers" as themselves aren't cool. What separates the cool-joe from the nerd is how the computer is used. I use the computer for playin' such fine entertainment games as Harry Potter, The Sims and Where In Time Is Carmen Sandiego?, and also for chatting and scammin' on people. Thus I am uber cool :D
Nerds however know all this freaky stuff about memory and linking things and cookies and stuff. that's just creepy. no-one should know too much about any one subject. I think that's the difference between "cool" and "nerd" as you put it- the cool person interests everyone, the nerd interests only himself.
no-one should know too much about any one subject
Of course. Your surgeron shouldn't know too much about that flesh, blood and organ things.
outsidethebox 11-30-04, 08:15 PM good point.
goofyfish 11-30-04, 08:17 PM Good point except that the techology field is advancing
at so rapid a pace that if you are an expert, you are behind.
:m: Peace.
You know when your on a date and you want to talk about p4's vs. amds and such. :D :D
True...true.
Depends with who you're on a date. :)
Starthane Xyzth 12-01-04, 06:15 AM I wouldn't mind having a geek-girlfriend whose knowledge of such matters far exceeded my own. Just as long as I knew SOME subjects better than her - then we could have decent 2-way conversations.
TruthSeeker 12-01-04, 11:53 AM My girlfriend is ashamed of me because I'm a geek.....
I'm almost dumping her... :bugeye:
Yeah.... I don't know if I can forgive that.....
TruthSeeker 12-01-04, 11:54 AM Yeah... so my answer to the question:
Has geeks become kewl?
Is obviously no.
I would love to meet a fine girl that is actually intelligent. That would be nice. I guess you have to go to Harvard or some Ivy leage college to meet a girl like that.
Starthane Xyzth 12-02-04, 05:34 AM Depends how high your standards are. There are some very intelligent women in the armed forces - but then, they can have their pick of men.
TruthSeeker 12-02-04, 12:12 PM I would love to meet a fine girl that is actually intelligent. That would be nice. I guess you have to go to Harvard or some Ivy leage college to meet a girl like that.
The hard thing is not to find intelligent girls. The hard thing is to find intelligent girl that have no boyfriends...
I surely hope we don't need to go to Hravard for that...
