I've heard that Ishmael by Daniel Quinn is an awesome book. I'm trying to find it somewhere to read and was wondering if anyone had read it and what their reaction was to it. Don't give anything away though!

Ishmael....... hmmmm, that reminds me of a character from Robert Jordan's The Wheel of Time. Never heard of Daniel Quinn. The Wheel of Time the PC game is totally awesome if you ask me, including the storyline. His book series The Wheel of Time is a best seller. Don't know much beyond that - it could simply be the title of an unrelated book by coincidence.

    Ishmael

Read it. Enjoyed it, but didn't love it. The book basically outlines how humans are destroying the world, in a very effective and believable manner. However Quinn suffered from the same thing Socrates did: he outlined the problem but gave no solution. I already knew that the world was being destroyed, and unless I'm mistaken most people know it as well. That it had no solution (other than (directly quoted) "you're an inventive people: invent.") led to my enjoying it instead of liking it.

    So, enjoy!

    Ishmael, by Daniel Quinn
    - Since you call yourself "thinker", I would venture to say that you MUST READ this book. It takes someone with an open mind and a willingness to think "outside the box" to truly grasp the concepts in this book.
I am currently half way through, but have completed "The story of B" (which is a continuation of "Ishmael")and I highly reccomend it as well.
There is a third related book which follows "The Story of B", entitled "My Ishmael". I have not read it yet, but my husband has read all three and was blown away. Depending on where you are in your life, these books can either profoundly change the way you view yourself and the world around you, or it may have little to no effect at all.
I will warn, however that those who do not typically think "outside the box" and are comfortable and content in their ignorance will probably throw these books down in disgust and anger.
You can usually find Daniel Quinn in any book store (I found his books in Borders), but there is a Website called "Ishmael Community" you may find quite interesting and you can also purchase these books on line through the website, as well as many others by different authors reccommended by Quinn. There is also question and answer page where you can challenge Daniel Quinn or simply probe a little further and he personally posts detailed responses. I highly reccomend visiting this website as well as reading the books and passing the message on to others!
