Has anyone felt this way?

Some time back, after a night's sleep I woke up and found that I couldn't move. I tried getting up but it was as if my muscles were disconnected from the brain. I was lying there still. It was a rather frightening experience because I started to think it might be permanent. After lying there for a while, I tried again and I was able to move.

I'd like to know if this phenomenon is well known. It was the first (and hopefully last) time it happened to me so.

Very well known and there's a decent thread (or 2) on it here.

Trying to find it. Bear with me. Or you can bare with me. I'd like that too

i had it a few times...once, i hallucinated that a giant spider was descending from the ceiling toward me.

    pure panic woke me completely.
one of the most scared times ive ever had in my life.

I had a dream where I died and went to purgatory. Woke up totally paralyzed, unable to even move my eyeballs, much less open my eyes. It was pretty intense.

Ah, thanks guys. I have been having more lucid dreams of late. I will look into this. It appears it has something to do with the body 'deactivating' muscles while you sleep so you don't act out your dreams.

Have you been depressed or sleeping longer recently?

    Or on any medication, etc?

    Just curious.

I had one where I heard someone inside my flat - trying to break down the bedroom door, but I couldn't move to stop them. Then, because I knew the door wasn't locked I realised it was a dream, so I woke up, only to hear someone trying to break in the window, and couldn't move again, realised I was still asleep and woke up thinking "that was WEIRD!". But:
this happened twice more, with the "burglar" further away each time until I woke up properly... unless I'm still not awake now.

Made for a very sleepless rest of the night though.

That's gotta be weird to experience. How long does it last? I'd imagine that quickly after being afraid, I would get really bored. Just not being able to do anything for, well, I don't know how long it lasts.

The closest thing to paralysis I've ever had was when I was tripping on Salvia divinorum. I've used the stuff before but with no luck. It turns out I was smoking it wrong. You have to take monster hits and let the smoke remain in the lungs for about 20 seconds. Well, that's what I did, and I had super powerful stuff (45x). I was walking around outside at night and took a super hit and kept it in for about 30 seconds. Nothing happened, so I was about to take another hit when it hit me.

It felt like I was stuck in one place. I dropped my pipe and lighter. Even though I was walking around, it felt like I was going nowhere. It's like my image processing software that's responsible for the perception of motion was gone. I could still see my surroundings, but it was like two dimensional images that changed a little with each step I made. Because I didn't recognize motion even though I was walking, it seemed incidental that steps coincided with the changing of the images I was seeing. Eventually, I realized that I was tripping and "oh, that must be the Salvia!" But definitely, I felt kind of scared like you must have. I felt kind of anxious, thinking "How long is this going to last? is it permanent?"

    But yeah, weird stuff.

Well it seemed like twenty minutes or so - everything in succession, but may have been only 5 minutes.
Not as bad as the time I had gas at the dentist...
I was laid in bed one morning in a half-awake state, dreaming I was having my filling (due that lunchtime) and woke up just as the dentist said "All done, you can get up now". So I rose, preparing to get dressed and set off for work only to find I WAS at the dentist, dreaming I was at home in bed dreaming I was at the dentist.... I couldn't remember anything at all between going to bed the previous night and waking at the dentist. So strange I spent the entire afternoon at work pinching myself to see if I was awake or still dreaming.
Fascinating in a way (how the mind can deceive you) but hugely disconcerting at the same time - I lost a whole night and morning from my life.

That reminds me of a story where this civil war soldier is being hanged. The trap door opens, he begins to fall, then the rope breaks and he falls into the river below. He avoids the gunshots of the enemy soldiers. Runs down the road for miles until he sees his front porch. He opens the gate, steps thru and.............................................................................the rope snaps tightly as he reaches it's end and his neck is broken, killing him instantly. The whole escape was a dream that occured between the time the trap door opened and he reached the end of his rope.

If this dream happened between the time of him starting to drop and his death, how the hell did anyone find out about it?

During Sleep Paralysis your senses 'wake up' before the rest of you

. As TDI alluded to, hallucination is quite common with Sleep Paralysis as well so if you see, feel, hear, etc. some weird shit its only a hypnopompic hallucination. Oddly enough, they tend to be quite scary in content and are often mistaken for fantasy figures such as demons, monsters, and bears (oh my!).

It wasn't a true story. It was fictional. Some famous author wrote it, but I can't rember his name. I think it was also made into a twilight zone episode.

Had that before. My lungs were also paralized and I was suffocating. Used to happen once in a while when I was a child...

    Anyways... it's pretty awful...
