    sorry bout that

I have a hard drive, formerly internal, that was removed from a computer and used externally in a Thermaltake docking station.

It recently stopped working. I have two similar models : Seagate Barracuda 7200.8 and 7200.10. The former is the one in question.

Both make a similar buzz sound upon, for lack of a technical term, "ignition" when the platter starts to spin up.
The faulty one however continues to make that noise every second or two like it can't start, and is repeating the process. Turning it off, you can hear the disc spin down, but comes to stop after a few seconds.

The working disc however takes about ten seconds or more to spin totally down to a stop. They both sound pretty much the same in normal operation, but the working one is obviously spinning a lot faster audibly.
Clearly the 7200.8 seems to be spinning, but only attains a very low speed, which is why it comes to a stop so quickly.

I have experienced a head scraping the disk in the past, which made a high-pitched screech. It was a sad sound. After I figure out what it was, of course.

I've read many accounts of disk failure (lots of them involving a steady clicking which I am not experiencing), and have been able to find several audio samples of various sounds of a crash for different manufacturers, but none of them quite match what I am describing.

It seems the platter is spinning, but not fast.
I can't say for certainty what exactly the malfunction could be.

Here is a link of the various sounds...

    http://datacent.com/hard_drive_sounds.php
Haven't checked youtube, but there might also be some examples there.

I have made audio samples of both the drives, if anyone is interested in taking a listen. Maybe someone can diagnose it by listening?

I'll just have to find a way to upload the audio files!

    A bit of explanation.
First, the sick one sounds like a copy machine.
Second, any loud clicks are me turning the disk off. I believe the soft click in the second clip is the head/armature whatever it is.

I slightly amplified the spinning down of both to accentuate them, but you may find turning up the volume to be to your liking, for those who are hearing impaired, inquisitively inclined, or just straight out perverted.

Oh, and honk if you love Mozz.

UPDATE: I am wondering, from several things I have read, if as one person put it, that one of the bearings is flawed. That was an explanation given for another person's problem *** http://forum.hddguru.com/seagate-barracuda-7200-500gb-head-replacement-t8730.html *** It was suggested that a bad bearing would cause it to spin up and then start over again, although the problem there was not exactly the same as my own, but close enough.

If it's not too large you can email it to me. I'll put it on my web account so people can download it.

Thank you for the generous offer, but can I trust you with my delicate, top secret, eyes only, alcoholic email address? Oh, it's also salacious. Somehow.

Why do you hate me so much?

More seriously, I was going to see about a temporary file on a site momentarily. If that doesn't pan out, I will take you up on the offer.

Let's make this thread a squabble between the two of us about whether or not I will email you or you email me and then I email you back thus revealing my address!

I actually didn't want to talk about my hard drive anyway. I'm just looking for attention. Obama Hitler got old, so now I need a new "Hey look at me! I'm here! I have issues! Of a technical nature! Not political or psychological or racial this time!" thread.

Just kidding.. mods: don't erase that! That was funny! To me, myself, and I. That's three real people who enjoyed that nonsense.

Okay Enmos, you wanna play hardball, eh?

Just give me a second, I saw a site that allows uploaded mp3 files and you just go to the address and play them from there. I was going to see if that works.

Other than that, I will send them to you. This will just take a little bit of time. One moment please!

    This isn't hard.

Someone just say something stupid and hopeless like "It's dead, Jim."

    or

    "Wow. I'm really f****n stumped."

    Motor? Or circuit board?
    Or aliens?

Not that much. It was an older drive and didn't have anything vital on it, though I would like a few of the files back. They aren't irreplaceable, but it would be very convenient.
I knew it probably wasn't going to be the last to go, that's for sure.

As for paying that kind of money. No. 400-1000 dollars is not worth it.
For that price, I'd risk fixing it myself, and damn the consequences.

Frankly, Mr. Shankly you're hard drive's screwed....it's headed for the cemetery gates. You will probably need a new one...but remember...some drives are bigger than others.
