View Full Version : Happy Diwali
kajolishot 10-25-03, 04:19 PM Some of you may not know but this weekend is Diwali [ Festival of Lights ] in India.
Diwali in short symbolizing "lighting up" of the darkness in the lives of people. The show of unity no matter what creed, religion, or race. It is the hope of humanity to celebrate diversity and hope for peace.

sargentlard 10-25-03, 04:20 PM You too:)
But without the fireworks in my part of the woods, it is merely another bland night.
kajolishot 10-25-03, 04:32 PM Ya. This is the time I wish I was in India.
So many happy childhood memories of these days.
That and the kites. :D
sargentlard 10-25-03, 04:37 PM Basant fucking ruled...no holiday can compare.....It is also a profitable hoiday for doctors because of those dumb kids breaking their arms and legs trying to catch the oh-so-elusive kites.
lixluke 10-25-03, 05:03 PM Happy Diwali
Oo lets all light some candles up and thereby save the world. No further action required.

Umm..Jerrek you might actually want to read up on what we are talking about here. It's a Hindu religious holiday, not a cheap humanatrian ploy to rally for peace.
Redoubtable 10-25-03, 10:49 PM Today is October 25th, or at least that is what my faithful Sancho, the 'puter, tells me.
Woohoo! Today is the feastday of Saint Minias! Yeah!
Go Saint Minias!

Martyred soldier of Florence, Italy, sometimes called Miniato. He was martyred for making converts in the reign of Emperor Trajanus Decius. An abbey near Florence bears his name.

Now, all of you must act as though this information is important to you and your lives, lest I think you a bunch of prejudiced, jingoistic swine.
airavata 10-26-03, 12:03 AM Diwali was awesome over here. We burst crackers and everything, lit diyas etc. The cracker bursting was amazing. We wrapped a 5000 wala around a football and burst it. From this year anything above 10000 wala has been banned, so no one can burst any of the 1 lakh walas, which are truly.. AWESOME!
The bijlis, bombs and rockets were amazing as well. We kept lighting rockets and chucking it at a petrol station. Diwali was amazing fun this year!
sargentlard 10-26-03, 12:09 AM Shut up airavata....shut up shut up shut up *puts hands on ears*

Those little bastards are dubbed as 'atom bombs'. my childhood experiments with those crackers were mischievious. blowing up coconutshells were our favourite. a bigger ones can almost match a granade explosion in loudness. hmmm those days...

i think by bijilis he means a type of small cracker ; 'wala' is as in "milk wala" (milk man). they used to call like 1000 wala - 1000 small crackers linked serially to a common fuse when lit they burst continuously.
cosmictraveler 10-26-03, 04:01 PM certified psycho....
For fireworks to be sent to you here in America just go to this link and they will be glad to sell you many products that you say can't be found where you live:

guthrie 10-26-03, 04:06 PM Hey, this all goes to show, another way of brinigng everyone together across the world- Big colourful Fireworks!
Here in the UK itll be the 5th of november in a couple of weeks. Im afraid its not religious, more a ritual celebration started because somebody got caught before he blew up parliament and the king.
so ahh, whatever happend to guy fawkes?
certified psycho 10-26-03, 04:47 PM Thanks everneo for the info about those little green devil. Them shits are wicked. I used to have fun lighting those.
Also on another note, thank you cosmictraveler for the web site. you are the man,..... can't find those green suckers on that site.
Oh forgive me for not getting up and celebrating a festival of a religion that teaches it is better to starve yourself and your own family than to touch that cow and feed your family. Lets all forget about that and light candles and pretend there is hope.
sargentlard 10-26-03, 07:28 PM what the fuck are you ranting on about???
again genius...read up on it.....
Also take your ass to India and you'll realize they get much more profit from the cow by keeping it alive instead of killing it the first sign of hunger.
You apparently have no respect for other peoples faith even though whatever you are bitching about has nothing to do with Diwali.
I've been to India before, and I was shocked at the hunger in the country. It is the only country in the world where, in less than 2 hours on the street with my dad, three families begged my dad to take their child(ren) as a servant(s) and take care of them because they can't feed them. Which is why I'm so not impressed with Hinduism.
And respect has nothing to do with it. I respect your right to pick a religion and practice it, but my opinion of it is my own and you have no right to tell me what my opinion should be in light of "respect for other people's faith."
Regardless, I'm not a follower of Hindu and I find it amusing this lighting of candles while half the country is dying of hunger.
But there is hope. Lets pretend anyways.
guthrie 10-26-03, 07:43 PM Apparently Fawkes was executed, I wont go into details, but google if you want.
The only small problem here is that people buy and let off fireworks for at least 3 weeks either side of the 5th, so it gets rather annoying.
guthrie 10-26-03, 07:45 PM So, Jerrek wishes to blame an economic problem on a religion? Whilst that is sometimes a useful outlook, in this case it is not.
sargentlard 10-26-03, 08:13 PM Well duh Jerrek....we have to pretend. On Christmas we shower ourselves with affection and happy Christmas specials when less than appreciated things occur.
Diwali is a celebration of the return of god Rama......after seeing shit all year round this is the one time where people really get to let loose.
Do you still celebrate while people hurt?....then why look down on them.
Which is why I'm so not impressed with Hinduism.
It isn't meant to impress and it isn't Hinduism's fault. Religion isn't meant to solve problems nor create them. It is faith and thats it......what people do with it isn't the religions fault. The hunger you talk about isn't to blame on Hinduism but rather on the greed and the depraved conditions of the people due to their fucked up leaders.

the sight of you, with your punk look, trailing your dad could have given them a false hope that he would take their starved children also for feeding. :p

Bijlis are tiny crackers that are the length of a little finger. They burst with a bang but are prety harmless. Walas are red crackers that are strung together - there is 100 wala, 500 wala, 1000 wala etc. all the way uptil 1,000,000 wala. Basically - higher the wala, longer the string of crackers.
Those little bastards are dubbed as 'atom bombs'.
Forget atom boms everneo. Now we have hydrogen bombs. They are so much better - burst with a boom and leave a the area around them scorched.

This has more to do with the economy than the religion. India's population grows at 2.5% per annum. That's really bad; the country is severely overpopulated. How is this Hinduism's fault? The economic situation in Pakistan is not mch better. Is Islam now at fault?
certified psycho 10-27-03, 07:48 AM Okay, getting back to the topic at hand......
