Hand luggage in USA airports

Hi,
what are the dimensions for the allowed hand luggage that can be carried onto a plane that's flying to another country, how big a hand bag can be?

If possible, a link to an official page stating that would be welcome.

no worries, in fact it helped me out aswell, because i am travelling to iowa in september

 

they've got some bloody ridiculous regulations on planes now. when i went to canada back in 2000 i was allowed to keep my pocket knife in my carry on, i had a chat to a travel agent about what im allowed to take with me this time, and i cant even take a bottle of water with me. the american culture of fear has completely taken over the airline industry.

 

I'm not going myself, just need a friend to bring something back for me.
