Hamas says PA coffers are 'empty'

Mr Haniya said he would make every effort to pay employees

The Palestinian prime minister has told the first meeting of his Hamas-led cabinet that the government is facing a deep financial crisis.

Ismail Haniya says his administration inherited a finance ministry that had no money left, yet had mounting debts.

He said the new leadership would do its best to pay the wages of more than 100,0000 Palestinian Authority workers.

Aid donors have threatened to cut funds to the PA if Hamas does not change its doctrine of non-recognition of Israel.

"We are making every effort to pay the government employees despite the financial crisis," Mr Haniya said.

"We inherited a situation in which we not only have no money in the treasury but a whole load of debts."

We look forward for our people to live in freedom and independence, side by side with our neighbours in this sacred part of the world

Letter of Mahmoud Zahhar,
foreign minister

The meeting came as Foreign Minister Mahmoud Zahhar denied suggesting that Hamas was countenancing a two-state solution in a letter to the United Nations.

The AFP news agency published what it said were extracts from the letter.

"We look forward to live in peace and security and for our people to live a dignified life in freedom and independence, side by side with our neighbours in this sacred part of the world," the text says.

It goes on to say Israel's "illegal colonial policies... diminish any hopes for the achievement of settlement and people based on a two-state solution".

The two-state formula, enshrined in the international peace plan known as the roadmap, would see the establishment of an independent Palestinian state living in peace beside Israel.

Hamas, which denies Israel's legitimacy and refuses to follow a path of non-violence and adopt past peace deals, has always rejected this formula.

Israeli moves

In a separate development, Israel's president is preparing to formally ask interim Prime Minister Ehud Olmert to form a government, after his Kadima party came top in elections last week.

A presidential statement said the announcement would be made at a news conference on Thursday, following a meeting between Mr Olmert and President Moshe Katsav.

On Wednesday, the central election committee released the final figures, confirming that Kadima won 29 seats in the 120-seat Knesset.

Mr Olmert will have six weeks to form a government - for which he will need several coalition partners.

On Tuesday he said the left-centre Labour Party, which supports his plan to withdraw from parts of the occupied West Bank, would be his most senior partner in government.
********

Is this the same Hamas who said last month they dont need the west's money, hundreds of millions from america & europe.

we have our arab brothers to help us the Saudi's, the iranians, But where is there aid there money?

"He said the new leadership would do its best to pay the wages of more than 100,0000 Palestinian Authority workers."

May is suggest a whip round in israel?

All this big talk of muslim brotherhood, yet when it comes down to money, they dont want to know them.

It seams europe is more willing to give money to them, is it because we care more, and our words are put into friendship & action.

While pretty words from iran & the saudis, are just that hot air.

Is latest war among themselves (fateh on hamas, palestinian police on hamas etc.) such a bad idea?
Maybe they'll wake up and change.

Not one Arab "rich or poor" regime cares about palestinians, but rush to act when it can damage "zionists" name.

Does anyone really believe that money to Hamas murderers will end up on a poor Palestinian's table?
Thief -- of his own people -- Arafat, anyone?

Free Israel:

Who is giving money to "Hamas murderers"? (Supporters of Hamas murderers, I guess...)

Like it or not, Hamas is the legitimate governing Palestinian party. Get used to it.

Are you trying to drum up an anti-Palestinian cheer squad on sciforums? If so, you've come to the wrong place. We don't support hate for hate's sake here.

And, before you make assumptions, that doesn't mean we're pushing a line that all Palestinians are lilly white and innocent, either.

Seem that Free Israel's post is a statement of fact, as it seems to be supported from facts in the real world, the Palistian Authority still seems to find money to buy arms to continue it's assault on Israel, while leaving it people in desprate need, is it because if they took a different direction, such as getting their population healthy, devloped industry for jobs, build hospitals, and raised the expectation of their people, the people would no longer wish to fight a useless war?

If Israel would rightfully return the tax monies it is withholding Palestine as a protest agaisnt its democratically elected government, the new government would be much more able to fund its social services that allow civilisation to proceed.

And weapons to kill more Israelis, its time that the Palastinians stop biteing the hands that help them and take care of their own people first, and worry a little less about throwing Israel into the sea.

Helo Buffalo Roam;

I don't think you've ever been to the Gaza Strip, or Israel. I went to Israel on two occasions before, and they are not helping hands. The people are wonderful, but the Palestinians are inhuman in their eyes and so it's tolerable to treat them like animals, literally. It's not to be expected either, from a nation that has no constitution.

The fact is that Israel is in total domination of Palestine, and has been in the position to start reparations long ago.

Are you trying to drum up an anti-Palestinian cheer squad on sciforums?

So if someone is saying the Democrats are bankrupt does that make them Anti-American?

So if someone is saying the Republicans are bankrupt does that make them Anti-American?

Of course not. Stop trying to link HAMAS with the palestinians. They might have won the Majority vote- but that doesnt make palestinians HAMAS.

And the exact same thing can be observed from the Palistinian side.
