So, it's like Halloween and stuff. I know that other countries have this odd holiday, but it's not always the same. Still others have nothing like it. Where you live do you have: haunted "exhibits" (like haunted house, hospital, forest, farm theme venues)? trick-or-treating? costume parties? other morbid celebrations? Supposedly we have two of the USA's best "haunted" exhibits here in northern Ohio: Seven Floors of Hell, located--literally--down the street from me. It's been there for years and I've never been to it. Mansfield Haunted Prison, which occupies the Mansfield Reformatory (sight of the filming of "The Shawshank Redemption"), which is an old (and rather beautiful) prison that is now a state monument. Generally I can't stomach blood, guts and horror, so it's not my style. But, I'm curious if other cultures have this kind of thing. ~String
No good scary stuff here. Just annoying little brats trick or treating. I usually just watch horror movies.
We have Halloween Horror Nights here. Usually very well done and scary, but the lines are always so long.
For some reason I was convinced that trick-or-treating was an American/Canadian enterprise. I recall reading something by PJ O'Rourke on Halloween in the Isles. Perhaps I was mistaken. ~String
I've never really been scared by horror stories of any kind. I love horror movies, but the only one that ever gave me a proper jolt in the gut was White Noise 2. It was those ghost people and their electronic voices and the way they talked like they were deformed and couldn't get the words out. Just...wrong, and a really nice way to release some adrenalin. Does anyone know of some properly scary ones?
I thought the first "Nightmare On Elms Street" was unbearably frightening. The commercial for "The Strangers" was frightening enough to give me nightmares (which it did). I, embarrassingly, admit that I have a low fright threshold, but my boyfriend said that "The Strangers" and "The Hills Have Eyes" were tops in the fright business (he's morbidly obsessed with gore and horror). The last "horror" movie I watched was "Silent Hill" which made queasy with anxiety. ~String
They have a haunted path set up in a local park here, do its in the trees and boulders. The cops get in on it and warn people to be careful because they have had some mugging or an escaped prisoner or some houses broken into, etc. but they have searched the area and its all clear. So when someone comes charging out of the woods at you and the guy leading you through the woods screams and runs, its mass panic. Ah, good times, good times.
I live in The Netherlands. We don't really have Halloween here (although it's gaining popularity each year), we do have something a bit similar though. It's called St. Maarten (named after some kind of Saint) and it's celebrated on November 11th. Kids go from door to door, in the evening, carrying Chinese lanterns and singing inane songs and they end up getting bags full of candy for it Please Register or Log in to view the hidden image! So that's similar to trick-or-treating I guess, without the costumes though.
That's awesome. I didn't know you lived in the Netherlands. It's one place that I'm dieing to visit. So, to get this straight, you have St. Maarten (we like the Dutch half-island in the Caribbean Island) and Halloween is also gaining popularity? ~String
Yep. I haven't seen them trick-or-treating yet, but the amount of merchandise is increasing every year.
There's a great farm horror hay ride over somewhere in New York state. Wanted to go but a) kids and b) way too far.
Yeah the blurb I saw on TV had the cart departing with a load of teenage girls. I hope he had earplugs.
a fair few people dressed up in costumes at the clubs and whatnot, and a few kids trick-or-treating in the towns i went through on the way to the city, but not too much different to any other night really. NZ, btw
hey do people where you (no one in particular - anybody/everybody answer) live put inflatable yard decorations out on their lawns for Halloween (or an other holidays)? Cause theres a lot of people that do that around here. personally I hate the things... they look retarded and weird and cheesy. what think ye?
