View Full Version : Half-Life is no good
Zoidberg 07-08-02, 05:55 AM I don't think Half-Life is all that good. It's oly around today because of Counter Strike and Day odf Defeat. The single player is dull and predictable, and how many Barney's actually work at Black Mesa. The add-ons are a waste of money too.
The game Half-Life has survived only because of the modifications that are available for free on the internet
Clarentavious 07-08-02, 04:07 PM Nope, there are other major mods for HL like Firearms. And...... what's wrong with it being around if people enjoy playing it? Sierra just released another patch about a month ago. People still play it.
The single player was completely unique and the craziest game I've ever seen. I believe it was released around early 1999. I don't recall any other game where you were forced to crawl right over a huge man eating cock roach (crab alien) in a tunnel, after you killed it and its green blood is all over the shaft walls.
The add ons are a waste of money? Don't think so, not if they are successful...........
Clarentavious 07-08-02, 04:11 PM This is coming from the same person who said
"I bought UT the day it came out and haven't stopped playing it since. It deserved GOTY. The mods are brilliant".
Unreal Tournament is a stunning game. It's mods are brilliant. Half-Life has a fakeness about it and it isn't as user friendly as Unreal Tournament
MadDogF 07-08-02, 06:28 PM Half Life is alright, and so is Counter Strike, but they are like many of the other games, the experts (ppl that have nothing but time to play games) will clean out anyone that joins, and the fairness or whatever for the newbies and intermediates are dwarfed...
Increan 07-10-02, 12:42 PM I think half-life is just like swat 3 it is only being played becasue of the mods that are out.
Pine_net 07-10-02, 12:51 PM Half Life was a blast
Clarentavious 07-10-02, 03:52 PM SWAT 3 isn't being played much more except by the true and loyal fans (people you'll find on Sierra's SWAT 3 message board) and people trying the game for the first time (which usually stop soon after).
I dropped out of the community because I don't enjoy the company of most people there.
If people still enjoy playing the games, that's their business.
About UT: it is almost impossible to compair an engine like UT with the one half life uses. You have to judge each game on it's own.
Having said that, I never played half life, but not out of principle, it's just that I can't play ALL fps :)
Redrover 07-12-02, 02:27 PM I found the single player part of Half-life much more inventive and rewarding than any other FPS. It's better than other, more modern games like Return to Castle Wolfeinstein, Max Payne or the Quake series because it was not just blasting away at a pile of bad guys while looking for a key. It had a compleling story and was one of the few games to actually scare me.
Was it better than medal of honor: allied assault? Cause that one has tons of atmosphere.
Redrover 07-13-02, 01:43 PM As great as Medal of Honor was, it was still basically an action game. The only diferance between MoH:AA and Return to Castle Wolfeinstein was that MoH:AA didn't have any zombies while Half-life had much more engaging puzzles. Half-life is more of an adventure game.
Half-Life, rewarding. I spent hours just to look at a giant teletubbie. Half-Life doesn't use it's own engine. Its a modified Quake engine. Anyway, Half-Life looks too comic booky. Unreal is a game of beauty.
Unreal is a game of beauty.
Now in this thread we agree. :)
Altough you can't compare the first or second Quake engine with Unreal. Now you could say: Unreal is too blocky, but Doom III is a game of beauty. It's all in the point of view and period of time.
How about the new Unreal engine, the one used in UT2003, Unreal2, Rainbow Six: Raven Shield, Y-Factor and untold dozens more.
Have you seen the Doom3 video. Wow. I was scared just watching it. And apparantly, that was on medium detail. That game needs a monster of a machine. At least I can get legit computer parts dirt cheap (£15 for a GeForce 2, wayhey).
I'm too busy playing Wolfenstein online at the moment. Its lag free with broadband, no matter what speed you have.
Clarentavious 07-17-02, 05:58 PM I'm not so sure HL uses a modded Quake engine. I'll have to look into this.
Yeah, what do you think Doom 3 would need? Did John say something about that?
It even says on the old Half-Life boxes. Based on the Quake engine.
Doom 3 is going to need at least 256mb of ram. I'm trying to get 1.5gb of ram just in case.
Emfuser 07-18-02, 11:01 PM I enjoyed HL's single player (1997 was original release, I think) because it made excellent use of the FP viewpoint while not just being a shooter. It won GOTY awards for a reason.
I also enjoyed the mods.
HL is past it's time, though.
If any of you enjoyed HL, try System Shock, System Shock 2, and Deus Ex. Excellent FP perspective games with lots of interactivity and definitely not just shooters.
Clarentavious 07-18-02, 11:33 PM I think it was released in 1998 actually; not positive though.
It was around '97 and '98. I'm thinking beginning of 1998. UT won GOTY in '99 I think. I know it won that, not sure what year. Did Wolfenstein win GOTY 2001? If it did, wow.
