View Full Version : Haiku!
Mystech 05-02-03, 02:40 AM A thread for posting Haiku. They're short and fun. Here are two I wrote a few nights ago while I was bored:
Dumbness
People are stupid
It makes me very depressed
Can I get a hug?
AR-15
Big black and phallic
You make me squeal like a girl
How I lust for you
EvilPoet 05-02-03, 01:02 PM The distant mountains
are reflected in the eye
of the dragonfly
-Issa
Clinging to the bell
he dozes so peacefully,
this new butterfly
-Buson
Clambering up the Cold Mountain path,
The Cold Mountain trail goes on and on:
The long gorge choked with scree and boulders,
The wide creek, the mist-blurred grass.
The moss is slippery, though there's been no rain
The pine sings, but there's no wind.
Who can leap the world's ties
And sit with me among the white clouds?
-Hanshan
Every single thing
Changes and is changing
Always in this world.
Yet with the same light
The moon goes on shining.

and I think of how the light

Mystech 05-03-03, 04:28 AM Ahh, thanks for contributing.
A reminder to all of our contestants, Haiku should follow the form of the first line consisting of five sylables, the second having seven, and the third should have five (5-7-5). Also points are docked if your Haiku is a sentence broken up into the 5-7-5 format, each line should be independent.

Mystech 05-12-03, 12:33 AM A reminder to everyone who still hasn't gotten it:
Haiku is a three line poem consisting of three lines, the first line must be 5 sylables, the second must be 7 sylables, and the third must also be 5 sylables in length.

one two three four five plus two
one two three four five
:)
Quite inspired, I know.
Life is quite simple
Difficulty is a choice
What will your choice be?
one_raven 05-12-03, 03:39 AM What IS a Haiku?
I know the whole 5-7-5 thing, but I mean deeper than that?
Is there a significance to teh 5-7-5?
Were Haiku's intended to have a purpose?
Does anyone know the history of Haiku?
Did God create man?
Or is man God's creator?
Don't fuckin' ask me.
Mystech 05-13-03, 12:56 AM They're an ancient form of chinese poetry, and most often deal with broad topics of life and nature and the like. More than that I can't say.

that hacker experiences couldn't be expressed in haiku.
Or, perhaps they said it shouldn't be done?

exactly what are the rules of Haiku? I know for sure that once in a while a thought pops into my mind...and I wanna write it down but it's just a couple sentences so I often just don't write it down :(
buddhafish 08-10-03, 04:07 PM Haiku rules are simple

second has 7
third has 5
No need to rhyme or anything.

it is not that i dislike them - on this thread i definately have to complement Carnuth's haiku on losing half the world - very nice haiku imho
river-wind 08-12-03, 05:10 PM the idea is to limit yourself to find a greater level of creativity.

If Phallus goes astray, this could be a problem. The only heaven; the only reward; the only fulfillment is when Phallus reaches Vagina and they are One.

wesmorris 01-12-04, 09:13 PM One thing though. MW's poem isn't really a haiku is it? I mean it doesn't follow haiku 'rules'. Anyway I still liked it.
I thought it was pretty cool too. No, I don't think it follows haiku rules but then again, maybe there's some sophisticated dimensions of haiku of which I'm unaware.
Lucysnow 01-12-04, 09:35 PM Here is what I found on Haiku:
"Japanese haiku have been traditionally composed in 5-7-5 syllables. When poets started writing English haiku in the 1950's, they adopted this 5-7-5 form, thinking it created a similar condition for English-language haiku. This style is what is generally considered "traditional" English haiku.
Over the years, however, most haiku poets in North America have become aware that 17 English syllables convey a great deal more information than 17 Japanese syllables, and have come to write haiku in fewer syllables, most often in three segments that follow a short-long-short pattern without a rigid structure. This style is called by some "free-form" haiku" Forms in English Haiku by Keiko Imaoka
On this site I found some 65 rules or suggestions conserning Haiku. http://www.dada.at/geoff/haiku/rules/
