A bill currently going through the House introduced by Democrat Gary Ackerman contains the following:

(3) demands that the President initiate an international effort to immediately and dramatically increase the economic, political, and diplomatic pressure on Iran to verifiably suspend its nuclear enrichment activities by, inter alia, prohibiting the export to Iran of all refined petroleum products; imposing stringent inspection requirements on all persons, vehicles, ships, planes, trains, and cargo entering or departing Iran; and prohibiting the international movement of all Iranian officials not involved in negotiating the suspension of Iran's nuclear program; and

Suppose this were to pass and the President were on board, could and would this really be enforced? Inspecting all persons, transportation and cargo going in and out of Iran? Prohibiting the movement of Iranian diplomats? Is this something that would have to go through the UN? And suppose the UN weren't on board?

Prohibiting the movement of Iranian diplomats?

This is the sort of ridiculous crap that comes about when Democrats try to act like Republicans.

That's it? No one else can comment on how this bill would be executed?

And, I wonder how many of our wonderful representatives in the House actually bothered to read the bill. There's a surprising number of cosponsors from the so-called anti-war Democrats (and this definitely sounds like something that would lead to war). A snippet from one of the cosponsor's website:

I have serious concerns about this administration's handling of the War in Iraq. From the beginning, this was a war that was sold to the American people and Members of Congress under false pretenses, and despite the administration's claims, no competent postwar plan was ever developed. Almost as troublesome, the administration resists any real oversight of postwar issues, so even as our soldiers from New York and around the country are facing the challenges of the war, the American people have little way of knowing who to hold accountable for the failures in Iraq.

And yet, she's trusting this very same administration to properly handle what this bill calls for. Hilarious.

this bill sounds like a god awful fucking stupid idea to me. this amounts to a psudeoblockade which would only encourage aggressive action by iran.

If implemented properly, I don't think there would be anything "pseudo" about this blockade.

which is even worse if my understanding of international law is correct a blockade constitutes an act of war.
