View Full Version : Guitar players?
sargentlard 04-27-04, 12:12 AM Anyone here a guitar player?...for fun or a serious student of the instrument?
How long have you been playing?
Style you favor?
Gear?
In a band?
Anything recorded so we can hear?
Self taught or took lessons?
and my most curious quandry.....Do you have decent or excellent knowledge of musical theory to go along with your playing?
Idle Mind 04-27-04, 02:01 AM I play, mostly for fun. I pick it up when I have some time. I have been playing about 9 years now, on and off. I started 9 years ago, let's put it that way. I play mostly bluesy type stuff when I improvise, but I like to play rock/alternative if I am going to learn a song. Recent songs learned: "Plush" by STP, and "In Keeping Secrets of Silent Earth 3" by Coheed and Cambria.
My gear...not much really. I have a Fender Strat: Japanese, 1985. My amp is a Crate something or other...it has two 10 inch speakers, and is about 60 Watts. I have an acoustic guitar, also made in Japan by a company called Onyx. I have never heard of them, or can't really find any info on them. There is a date stamped on one of the supports that goes across the bottom that reads April 17, 1962, so that's kinda neat.
I am not currently in a band, nor do I have any music recorded. I am self taught. I have an adequate knowledge of music theory to go along with my playing, but I have a lot to learn. Do you have a question about something to do with theory?
Johnny Bravo 04-27-04, 04:32 AM Been playing twenty years, sometimes in various bands.
It was always 60% fun /40% pain in the ass :) -hauling gear around, getting the high end of your hearing sizzled by cymbals, trying to get people to learn songs.
I started out as a huge fan of Robby Krieger and Page/ Beck/ Clapton, got into Danny Gatton and the whole Chet Atkins school of fingerpick electric guitar. Rockabilly, Country Jazz..that kind of thing.
Gear-...way too much. I try to sell when I can and buy speakers with the cash.
My favorite guitar is a 1968 Gibson SG special but I also have..
Les Paul
1983 Fender Elite strat and a MIJ strat
Heritage Jazz guitar
Carvin electric twelve string
1998 Gibson SG
acoustic twelve string.
Amps- 1968 Fender Pro Reverb is my favorite but I also have-
1963 Fender Brownface Bandmaster
Acoustic 165 combo
Acoustic gt60 head.
No guitar effects pedal. I just use volume for sustain and amp reverb.
Theory? Working on it..got books that address it, but I don't think Im fluent enough give any tips.
kazakhan 04-27-04, 08:46 AM Yes, for fun.
About 24 years
Hard Rock/Metal, blues, classical anything but jazz:D
A few acoustics and a cheapo electric (goes well) & jade amp, my equipment of choice would be a Les Paul/Marshall combo.
No band, a few garage bands in my younger days...
Nothing recorded.
Self taught, a little theory.
Closet Philosopher 04-27-04, 12:55 PM I play the acoustic guitar for fun... mostly because I can't afford an electric one at the moment. I play the bass guitar for fun too, but I am much better at it. I am getting a new five string bass soon. when I go to University, I will try to hook up with a band. I pretty much know all the notes for the acoustic guitar, I just have to work on speed and cord mamorization. I enjoy playing the bass much more, it has a beautiful low sound and I can rock on it forever. I don't quite get that from an acoustic guitar, probably since I am not that good at it. Eventually, I will probably more into it. I am considering starting lessons, even though I am a little old.
I have played the bass for a while now.. about 2 years... maybe. Acoustic guitar for only a few months, off and on.
Bass gear: Ibanez 4string (http://ibanez.com/guitars/guitar.asp?model=SR400)
I will be getting a five string ibanez soon. I am not one of those Fender freaks, I like the feel of fenders just as much as mine, and I think people pay too much for the name.
Amp: Rogue 120 watt
Acoustic guitar: Some beasty Citation
As for the theory question, have been taking piano lessons and other instrument instruction for a long time (chello, saxophone, piano...) so I have learned about all the music theory and famous musicians and all that great stuff.
I think music education has been lacking in today's school. If everyone knew how to play an instrument or instruments of their choice, there would be more good music. There is a shortage of opportunity, because music has high costs for instruments and lessons.
