There are some great studies out there, just waiting to be read.
This one, by Bandura (first name Albert I beleive), discovered some great things. Apparently children model other peoples behaviour, specifically adults who are alike to themselves, and who are rewarded for their behaviour. According to some researcher, consistency is a key factor in whether a behaviour is imitated or not; thus "do as I say, not as I do" (parent) becomes "I'll say as you say and do as you do" (child) (Psychology: The science of mind and behaviour, by Richard Gross, Pg. 689, Column 2, paragraph 1.). :)
