What do u think about Lovecraft and his books? I am thinking on buy it but i heard some people saying that dont like it. On the other hand i see more people saying good things about his books.

So, what do u think? Is it really good?

btw, since winter is coming, i love to read a nice terror book near the fireplace while is raining out there

I love go to night clubs and dance and do sports and so on, but stop for a while its great too.

So, i am asking u to give me good ideas, good terror books that u know.

btw, i ask for somewhat famous book or famous books. Do not post books that are not famous because i live in Portugal, a stupid country with little literature. People dont read in my country, so the most natural thing for librarys is to sell just the most famous things.

    thanks

Give me your email address and I'll send some books by Lovecraft as .pdf's,
so you can check out for yourself.

I like them very much. Lovecraft inspired from his dreams in quite a few stories, so they have an otherworld quality in them.

Lovecraft is a trip. Some of it is like "What the hell was that all about?" Others are more along the lines of *gasp!* "Oh my ever-lovin' god!" and a sudden desire to throw the book into the fireplace before the evil that's in it escapes, although you're helpless to tear your eyes away from the words. I guess like every other author, he has his ups and downs. You may or may not like his work, but you will most likely never forget it.

Although not usually acclaimed as a classic writer I wouldn't call him anything but a true genius of horror writing. Some of his early writings are childish indeed and a bit stupid, but the entire Cthulhu mythos cycle is brilliant: archaic details about ancient sects and texts (some are real, others, such as the fabled Necronomicon, are not), the lore of ancient gods from dimensions from before our time and so on, it is all very otherwordly.

Lovecraft's only two weak points are also his biggest faults. He is VERY vague in his descriptions and it really depends on your imagination to create environments and creatures of great horror. His other problem is that he is a bit pendantic and relies on many of the same formulas over and over again, with constant references to the same places, the same names, and the same events just to inspire an aura of mystery.

    Highly recommended.

Hagar- I agree with the vague descriptions, although I wonder if certain descriptions aren't intentionally left vague so that you can pull from own subconscious imagery that feeds on your own personal fears. I'm probably reaching, but it would be a neat trick.

Kazbadan- There was a movie called "Cthulhu Mansion". Stay away from it unless you really really like cheesy movies or unless you like watching movies while stoned, which is the only way I found it to be even remotely entertaining.

    OH MY F**KING GOD!!!!
Okay, Okay. I've gotta see this thing! I love silent movies, although I guess this one proves Mel Brooks wrong. He billed his "Silent Movie" as the last silent movie that would ever be made.

I always figured Lovecraft was nondescriptive about his beasties since to know them is to know madness.

At the Mountains of Madness, Dream Quest of Unknown Kadath, The Dreams in the Witch House and Call of Cthulhu are all excellent stories. You can find pretty much all his stuff online if you use google.

Tell us what it's like after you get it. I can't afford to order it from the USA atm, and even if I could, they don't send it to my country.

Obviously you evil Latvians are trying to undermine our sacred American way of life. All this time we're watching Iraq and China, you guys are behind the scenes, secretly toiling away at your lifelong goal of global domination. Admit it! You won't rest until every ball game is opened with Latvian peasant dances!

Whoa! Sorry about that! I was channeling messages from the Department of Homeland Insecurity for a moment there!

I know they do DVDs by region. I didn't notice what region(s) thie movie will play in. If you've got a way to play it, we might be able to get you a copy yet. Even if the US has some problem with Latvia, there should be members on this board from countries that don't, and maybe we can get one to you the roundabout way.

The DVD they have released is region-0, meaning region free.
    Thanks for the advice!
I'll talk to whitewolf about this, she lives in the USA and has my address anyway.
I could pay her with an Amazon gift cert. Thankfully Amazon has no problems with those evil plotting Latvians.

I haven't really found one. While coming hom from the Navy I read a book called "Faerie Tale" that was pretty good, but the ending was a total cop-out. It was like the author let his 10 year-old daughter write the ending. It was inconsistent with the flavor of the rest of the book.

I don't know that "Evil" would count as a terror book. It's a documentary on the nature of individual evil (as opposed to "evil" governments). It looks at the psyches of some truly depraved people, delves into how a "normal" mind tries to rationalize abnormal behavior in others, and when it starts comparing the daily activities of these "evil" people to the daily activies of rest of us it becomes frightening to see just how easy it is to cross that line from soccer mom to serial killer. It's a great book, starting with bullies and working its way up to Ted Bundy, Ed Gein, Richard Ramirez, John Wayne Gacy, etc.

Unfortunately, I loaned it to my dad and when he died I think it got sold at the estate sale. I wish I could find it again. Hey, maybe Alibris or Amazon will have it. I don't recall the author.
