View Full Version : Going Anywhere?
Are any SF'er's traveling this Spring? This Summer? This week? If so where? I love traveling but haven't since protesting the Pope's visit to St. Louis in 2000.:( Before that I hit LA twice a year back to '95!! Great having friends with money in cool places.)
But on March 16th that all changes! I'm flying to Chicago for a week! I'll be there for the chaotic St. Patrick's Day festivities! I haven't been there in 17 years. Goin to a Bulls game and everything!
Though I am aware there are alot more fascinating places to visit, so tell me your plans!
The Devil Inside 03-07-07, 09:58 PM my lady and i have decided to have our wedding in denmark next month..eloping kinda.

congrats.:)
my lady and i have decided to have our wedding in denmark next month..eloping kinda.ALREADY Chicago is upstaged. DENMARK WEDDING!! Pictures would be cool. My sister (not the Christian fundamentalist one) went to Arhus for some business trip for a US/Danish industrial paint company. She loved it. I'll take Denmark anyday!
Going to Boston this Sunday
Going to Boston this SundayThat would be a blast. I love the Boston accent too. (Unless it's coming from the Rob as in Rob & Ambuh:rolleyes: ) Such history! Anything in KC that's over 50 years old is considered historic! Never been to New England. Closest I got was Washington, D.C. when I went to protest attacks on abortion rights and to protest Clinton over Waco. THIS Sunday! Lucky You!!!!!!!

Nice one. Congratulations.
Isn't there a tradition where the bride kisses all men and the groom kisses all the single women in Denmark? Like, full on kissing.

China (Beijing) and Uzbekistan (Tashkent) - maybe autumn, maybe not, don't know yetWe have a Winner. Talk about exotic!!! Geez! I haven't been able to exit the 30 mile ring around Kansas City in 7 bloody years!!! If I had to choose ONE of these destinations I'd go for China, then Uzbekistan then Lithuania then UK.
Going rafting in Mexico.Maybe I'm getting too excited about my wittle trip to Chicago....:(
Sounds like something Ozzy Lusth would do!!!!
I'm moving from São Paulo, Brazil to Chicago, USA.
I'm moving from São Paulo, Brazil to Chicago, USA.THAT'S quite the leap of addresses! I think that's the same distance as it is from Kansas City to London! Maybe Moscow! Not only will you have serious jetlag but you'll have SEASON lag. I'd love to see Sao Paulo, but with an organized tour group that sticks together throughout the trip. Incredible city. Bush stunk it up today but the stench should clear in a few months.
Chicago is a great city. Maybe not the Southside or the SW side but it is a fantastic place to visit and live.
Yeah, I dont really want to move, but i'm not the one who pays the bills :) I'm sure that if I have difficulty adapting we can come back.
There was insane traffic all day today because of that stupid US president. They closed the international airport fo 20 mins and delayed a bunch of flights, closed some streets and redirected traffic to other ones, and there were also lots of protests... it was chaos.
I love São Paulo. It's a city of contrasts.

I love São Paulo. It's a city of contrasts.I would much rather go somewhere like SP than a sticky, tacky, overpriced, touristy spot full of overpaid & overweight foreigners ordering drinks at the pool.

Fraggle Rocker 03-09-07, 05:41 PM We're hoping to plan a trip to Amsterdam next spring, for our 30th wedding anniversary. I've never been there, my wife was there in 1969 before she knew me. We want to see the tulips and just enjoy some prosperous European culture. We've spent too much time vacationing in the Third World--a "sociologist's holiday."

I'd LOVE to see Amsterdam. The polar opposite of the backward religious conservative region that I'm in.
I'll admit I haven't done enough 'sociologists holiday's' to be weary of them. I've only left the US once and that was a day trip to lovely Tijuana, Mexico in the late 90's.
Ahh. Amsterdam in the Spring.....
Athelwulf 03-10-07, 12:39 AM My aunt has told me about this German immersion program (http://www.summer.pdx.edu/dsap/philosophy.shtml) at Portland State University in lovely downtown Portland, Oregon. For five weeks, from June 27th to August 2nd, you take all sorts of classes about German history, culture, literature, politics, etc., in German. You use German exclusively, both inside and outside class, from dawn to dusk, for the entire duration of the program. When you're done, you have twelve college credits and have advanced to a whole new level of German knowledge.
Because I want to improve my German, and because I love love love Portland, I believe I will almost definitely go through with this program.
I've been wanting to get out and travel lately. I'm fucking tired of this conservative hick town. I wanna see San Francisco, Vancouver, Montréal, Michigan, Europe, Shanghai, New Zealand, New South Wales, and on and on and on. But I have no money.
Have fun on your trips, guys. And tell us all about it when you come back. I'll try not to let the jealousy overpower me.
Israel this summer.
South America and Indo-Asia within the next few years.
Israel this summer.
South America and Indo-Asia within the next few years.South America would be Awesome! Indo-Asia too! But Occupied Palestine? That's like traveling to South Africa when Botha the apartheid criminal ran the show. Aidng the zionist economy? Anyone that has an Israeli stamp on their passport is denied entry into The People's Republic of Genjiland.
John Connellan 03-14-07, 11:29 AM OMG that would be a dream.
Over here in Europe we have very cheap package holidays to the Canaries so I wouldn't get too excited! It's not that exotic :D . The one thing I like about the Canaries is their reliable climate. You can count the number of rainy days they get on your fingers.
Prince_James 03-14-07, 06:31 PM Genji:
Botha was a hero. Look at the crap South Africa has become today.
Prince_James 03-14-07, 06:32 PM Athelwulf:
I think you want to go to Portland for the highest per-capita strip clubs in the US of A.
Genji:
Botha was a hero. Look at the crap South Africa has become today.Botha was a slavemaster shunned by the rest of the world, except for the OTHER apartheid country; Israel. Denying the majority of the population land ownership meant these people never learned to operate farms or businesses or an economy. Caging a population like animals then expecting them to retain slaveocracy economic status is foolish. Expecting there not to be anger at Master and reprisals is just as foolish. White landowners got what native blacks recieved when the imperialists invaded their continent. Payback's a Bitch ain't it.
Now that PJ has derailed yet another thread with his klan bullshit we can get back to the subject!
I leave Friday morning for Chicago!! I am excited. It's been so long. I'll miss my hometown habits though!!
This time tomorrow I'll be in Chicago! My first airplane trip since 2000! So all you Genjiphobes will have a solid SIX days without me. Not even a peep. I won't be back online till next Thursday. I have access to computers but I could never logon here!! So as of 11:30 tonight I'm gone! (for awhile)
phonetic 03-15-07, 06:38 PM Have fun Genji :D
Yeah, the Canaries are nice for sunshine, but not much else. Gran Canaria is... a bit of a dump really, although there's a very flashy timeshare place called Anfi Del Mar that's nice. Playa Del Ingles is full of bars and people trying to sell you drugs. Some guy, clearly out his tree, wearing a rep shirt tried to sell me some LSD. I was 14 at the time :s Then a few offers of cocaine. Then some ganja, which was useful because my friend and I actually wanted some.
I had a fairly scary experience there though. My friend and I were drinking one night - I wanted to head back, but my friend persuaded me to stay out for a bit and have another drink. 1 drink. Well, we got roped into some strange, buy 1 drink get 1 free thing. So said yeah, but we got 2 glasses of vodka redbull each, with at least half the glass being vodka, and a free shot of peach schnapps. Needless to say, after that we were fairly wrecked and decided to go somewhere else. Had a few more drinks and then we wandered into this place that looked like a shopping centre, although if I was sober I'd be able to tell it wasn't by the shady characters hanging around outside. No, this place was full of brothels. In our drunken state, we decided to chat to some of the girls plying for business. We had a drink in one of the places and my friend said he'd be right back. Thinking he'd gone to the toilet or something, I said yeah, whatever. When he didn't come back a good 15 minutes later, I was kind of worried. I asked if he was in the back - they said no. I walked through the place, shouted his name a couple of times - nothing. Went into some establishment after a guy said he'd seen him go in there. I said ok, went in and sat down. Waiting for him to come out... I got a drink whilst I was waiting and he still didn't appear, all the while this black chick was trying to persuade me to hand over my cash for services. I was getting pissed off so I shouted at her. She got a bit pissed off and shouted back.. The bar guy said something to her and told me to chill and gave me another drink. I can't remember anything after that. I woke up in a random place the next day in some block of flats and my kidneys ached like fuck.
Got back to the apartment - found the parents looking extremely anxious, saying thank fuck I was alive. My friend had got back a few hours earlier and was asleep... I was extremely pissed off with him. Even more so when he didn't have any money and said he'd lost it. Yeah, he lost it to some chick who offered him a 'massage' and he handed it over. And it was just a massage he got. Unlucky!
So, Gran Canaria is on my blacklist of places to go again and I don't speak to that guy anymore.
Have fun Genji :D

So, Gran Canaria is on my blacklist of places to go again and I don't speak to that guy anymore. That sounds like fun! But the losing your friend part in the brothel, being very intoxicated (maybe drugged) waking in a strange place, makes me think of the movie Hostel!!
I'll take a trip to the Canaries over Chicago anyday!

It was ok until the next morning! Explaining what happened, without dropping my friend in the shit wasn't very easy.
Apart from that, bad times :(
My kidneys ached for a few days, so it was either alcohol poisoning - which is possible, but the fact I could walk and communicate 'til I passed out makes me think otherwise. Or I got drugged. Either way, there's no lasting damage, so you live and learn :D
There is a great big nudist beach with sand dunes that's pretty cool. That's one thing I liked about GC. My friend wasn't too impressed when I took my kit off though :D
Going rafting in Mexico.
How was it?
Alright. Not nearly as exciting packrafting a first descent down a canyon in the Sierra Madre sounds, even with fallow mota fields and sans-permit travel past border patrols.
