I stumbled across this "E-lance"website today.

Since this is my chosen field (FEA/CAE/Structural analysis) I was curious how much "free lance" FEA engineers from around the world were asking for their services. Since design data for analysis can be easily transmitted anywhere in the world, it is entirely feasible for engineers anywhere to provide these services, give some access to computing resources and engineering software.

The typical pay range for an engineer in this field in the USA is about $25 - $60 USD per hour, depending on the specialty and the experience.

    Website:
    https://www.elance.com/r/contractors/q-fea

Just a quick sample of available E-Lance contract engineers (leaving off their names)

    Expert in numerical simulation
    China | Rate: $3

    EXPERT DESIGN ENGINEER
    Pakistan | Rate: $3

    Product Design and Development
    India | Rate: $5

Product Improvement based on Robust Design
    Brazil | Rate: $5

    Mechanical Engineer (CAD designer)
    Macedonia | Rate: $7

Followed by hundreds of similar contractors.

Assuming that some of these engineers are competent and capable, this brings home the reality of the global job market in a very big way.

Why would anyone invest in a college degree in engineering (or other profession that can be supported globally in this way) today, knowing you will be competing in a global job market where soon you won't be able to earn a living wage?

It's a brave new world, better enjoy your day in the sun while it lasts.

I have heard that China is paying over 200,000.00 US for airline pilots which is about 150,000.00 more than American companies are today so it depends upon which jobs that you choose to become a part of.

That is why this topic interests me so much. I would never advise my kids to enter the field of engineering; really any field where the work or service can be performed "virtually". Eventually, the Internet will make any job like that pretty much worthless. Off the top of my head, just a small sample of the professions that this will destroy include:

    Engineering
    Accounting
    IT
    Programming
    Teaching
    Counseling

    What are some others?

The "oldest profession" and probably hair stylists are safe from internet competition, I think.

Exactly - better choose a "boots on the ground" (or ankles in the air) profession.
