Some one once said that cows contribute more to global warming than cars. Is this true?

Cows produce a lot of methane (CH4). Methane is about 10-27 times (source depending) as powerfull greenhouse gas as carbon dioxide. According to basic calculations doubling of carbon dioxide would yield some 0,7 degrees increase of temperature. So if you translate that to methane, you'll get the idea.

However, even if the planets surface only existed of cows, you would simple have not enough to match the carbon dioxide level. Second, methane only has a life span of 10-13 years in the atmosphere before it oxidizes to carbon dioxide, mainly due to ultra violet radiation.

Advise: the majority of those stories contain a chicken little level well above global average.
