    Ah, Mark Steel ....

At least I get some Mark Steel out of this:

The original investigation into Galloway's dealings in Iraq came when The Daily Telegraph accused him of taking money from Saddam, an allegation that cost them £150,000 when they lost the libel case. Now, despite their acceptance he didn't take a penny for himself, the parliamentary committee says his charity "damaged the reputation of the house". So there's the explanation - the full report probably went: "You mean you weren't on the take? How the bloody hell does that make the rest of us look, you bastard?"

Somehow, however, the diligent committee seems to have missed other possible examples of the house being brought into disrepute, such as a Prime Minister taking the country into war because "I have no doubt that Saddam possesses weapons of mass destruction - absolutely no doubt, no doubt whatsoever."

And insisting we could be attacked in 45 minutes when he knew this was bollocks; and ignoring his own intelligence that this would make us targets for terrorism; and ignoring the UN and the weapons inspectors, so assisting in the creation of mass carnage, while he swans off to make millions from his memoirs.
    (Belfast Telegraph via SpideredNews)

Really, I haven't followed the scandal at all. Didn't know it was taking place. Just the other day, though, I asked a friend of mine if he knew what Mark Steel was up to. I have, at least, something of an answer for now.

We've got nothing in the U.S. to match Mr. Steel, though largely because Americans despise such complicated notions as he lays out in the article.

So ... just to clarify as I read up on this controversy: it wasn't some silly thing like chucking spitballs in protest?

    Yeah galloway is a legend.

i Love this quote from the bashing he adminsitered on the enate committe a couple of years ago

R Coleman: "Did you not meet Saddam hussein on many occasions"

G Galloway "I met Saddam on as many occasions as your defence secretary, twice in fact" " But instead of going to sell him Guns and Maps to better target those guns, i went to bring about the end of Sanctions and bring peace.. A rather better use of two meetings wouldn't you think"

    You gotta rate it!!!!

I don't know whether a video of that senate committee confrontation is still available for viewing anywhere, but if it is: Watch it through half-a-dozen times. Listen to the way Galloway refuses to give straight answer to the questions. Ask yourself if he is being honest. (He is certainly being clever!)

I can only say that I found it completely fascinating -- and every time I watched I became more certain that Galloway was lying.

I find myself a little baffled that such a conceited man is so widely revered.

Well actually i found Galloways performance excellent. he completely laid the smack down on Coleman and CO.

Galloway's front organization, a "charity" known as the Mariam Appeal that campaigned against the sanctions on Iraq, had in fact received direct Iraqi subventions from the proceeds of the U.N.-sponsored "Oil for Food" program. Bank records established that Galloway's former wife had been paid at least $150,000 in this way. A completely separate U.N. inquiry chaired by former Federal Reserve Chairman Paul Volcker* identified another "Oil for Food" payment to the same lady, this time in the sum of $120,000.

And so it was! It appealed to an anti-war audience (and I suppose that includes me).
It had classic qualities. Media Studies students ought to write PhDs on it!
But spidergoat's link is a good one. Galloway can look forward to a sticky future!

BTW, there's another Scottish left-wing politician/performer slipping deeper into the shit in a simply wonderful saga that's consumed thousands of column inches in the Scottish press but is little reported elsewhere. Google "Tommy Sheridan" to get a taste of the fun!

This makes it sound as if GG's wife had personally received payments into her own bank account. I don't think that this is true. Is this something that was contained in the documents found by the Telegraph that GG is disputing the authenticity of.
I would put a few "allegedlys" in your statements. I don't know if your bank account is worth his attention, but GG is not averse to a bit of libel money,
    allegedly
