In response to N. Korea's recent detonation of a nuclear weapon and test firing of multiple missles, Gen Nakatani (a ruling party official and former defense chief in Japan) has called for Japan to attack N. Korea! There are also talks of Japan starting its own nuclear program which they already have the technology to do quite quickly.

So if Japan attacks N. Korea, N. Korea will attack S. Korea which will draw the US into the fight. N. Korea would likely then call for help from its ally, China. Who'd have thought WW3 might start with a Japan/N. Korea conflict?

A ruling party lawmaker today urged Japan to break the terms of its pacifist constitution and pre-emptively attack North Korea following the Stalinist state’s nuclear bomb test.

“North Korea poses a serious and realistic threat to Japan,” stated former defense chief Gen Nakatani in Tokyo at a meeting of Liberal Democratic Party officials. “We must look at active missile defense such as attacking an enemy’s territory and bases.”

Nakatani said the attack could be accomplished by equipping navy ships with cruise missiles.

The former defense minister’s warning arrives on the heels of an LDP panel proposal that Japan should change the terms of its pacifist constitution, written by the U.S. after world war two to prevent Japan using hostile force to settle geopolitical disputes, to enable a military attack on North Korea.

“The Japanese government has built a defense network since a North Korean Taepodong-1 missile flew over Japan in 1998 that includes anti-missile batteries around Tokyo and is expanding to other major cities. Defense Minister Yasukazu Hamada in March ordered the shooting down of any North Korean missile or related debris that entered Japanese territory,” reports Bloomberg.

It’s not an exaggeration to conclude that any attack on North Korea could eventually lead to world war three. North Korea and China are allies and both have nuclear weapons. If North Korea is attacked by anyone, its first course of action would be to strike South Korea, a close ally of the United States. This would obligate the U.S. to retaliate, bringing American troops to the Chinese border and any escalation from that point would be a disaster.

Russia is against any attack and if something like this did start to originate into a war, Russia will include its share of nuclear defenses.

In an event of Japanese' build up of nuclear power...etc...in the region, Russia will allocate part of its nuclear forces into that region, especially Vladivostok. Also massive production of nuclear submarines will take hold in addition to that Russia is partially on the North Korean side and not on Japanese. The World War II peace was never signed between Russia and Japan (because of Kuril Islands) and thus Japan and Russia are actually at war currently.

If an attack on North Korea will happen from Japan (which I really doubt it would) than Russia will most likely not try to get involved unless this attack was a threat to its land...which depends on the way the attack was carried out.

Russia would get its ass kicked by the US, and Japan would probably fend Russia off pretty well too.

Anyways, draqon is assuming that Russia is as stupid as Korea, and Russia is just as powerful now as it was in the Cold war.

Both of which are incredibly wrong.

Draqon, russia is having trouble supporting ITSELF, let alone starting a war. They would stay out.

If Japan wants to, they can create a missile based nuclear deterrent before North Korea, despite Korea's head start.

Unless Kim Jong Il can be persuaded to step back, they don't really have any other option.

They don't think they can fully depend on America to defend them.
    Are they wrong about that?

Yeah, America already has AEGIS cruisers with SM-3's surrounding Korea, and probably 1 or 2 ohio's.

If anything the US would probably give Japan one or two thermonukes.

    Yah, actually its interesting.

Japan became America's friend even though we nuked them because we helped Japan rebuild it's society. And it worked very well, were good allies now.

the irony being that we are doing the same thing in Iraq and the entire rest of the world outside of Iraq and the US is whining about it.

They wouldn't need to. Japan is one of the most sophisticated nations in the world in terms of nuclear technology, and they have a great deal of weapons-grade nuclear materials stockpiled, just sitting in vaults. It's a pretty safe bet that they already have very detailed plans for nuclear warheads drawn up. If they decided to actually become a nuclear power, it would probably just be a matter of telling the guys in the machine shop to actually fabricate some warheads. Japan is often considered a 'de facto nuclear power' for that reason, even though so far as anyone knows they have never actually built any bombs.

Anyway, the idea that China would get drawn into a nuclear war for the sake of pathetic little NK is just laughable.

in reality nothing would be better for the US than for them to have a go at each other China and Japan with NK kick starting it... what percentage of US debt is held by them

Im sorry but explain to me how they have so much knowledge on nuclear weapons if they have never built let alone tested one?

And if they have so much weapons grade uranium stockpiled in some super secret vault that nobody knows about, how exactly did you find out about it?

Now sure, maybe they have nukes because they have all the tools to make one. But assuming they are the world leader in nukes is a step way way too far.

But NK's not going to launch a nuke if they know that there is a very real threat that Japan will launch a bomb back several hundred times more powerful than NK's.

well japan may well be able to fashion up a fission bomb... but it may take a little more time for a fusion bomb... can't have one without the other

I really don't think anything is going to happen....

It's almost as if everyone wants a war, but all they are going to do is talk and send strongly worded letters.

Then they will further isolate them, which they will just ignore because they are doing it now.

NK just wants attention, and they are getting it.

They are best of buds. See Shanghai Co-operation Organisation. The only bruised ass would be NATO.
