Gas Prices hit $5 in California and will go higher

A Youtube user by the name of G4T has posted a video of gas prices in Southern California, showing that the price of gas has hit $4.99 a gallon. Most experts predicted this would not happen until this Summer, however it’s hitting early. It’s now only a matter of time that all across the nation, gas will continue to soar to over $5 a gallon. This not only means higher gas prices, but also higher groceries and anything shipped on a truck. The uploader of the video also points out that in California many people commute hours to work, which could cause them to lose their jobs and a major change in lifestyle. Meanwhile, Obama is in his thrown still not drilling in America.

It's $8.50 a gallon here (higher on the freeway) and rising.
Americans are a bunch of whiners when it comes to gas prices..

-This is still no reason to begin offshore drilling. The insignificant amount of relief it would give is no where near worth the amount of damage that would be inflicted.

ehh i live in LA and have yet to see gas prices remotely close to that.. there is one fucking idiot down here that has gas 50cents higher than any other gas station down here but idiots will be idiots

 

I only posted what I found when I Googled highest gas prices. I still think the prices are higher there than anywhere else, over 4.00 at least, aren't they?

 

So do I and the gas around here is still under $4.00. But I really don't see why people would loose their jobs because of it. There is more than one way to get to work. I mean the bus is only a $1.50, you just have to wake up earlier.

 

Gas in my part of the country is running $3.10 per gallon last I checked.

 

Most of that is tax.

I guess I won't be getting that 2011 Mustang GT.

The main problem is that most buses won't take you to your work location but only in the neighborhood. That could mean a mile or more walk. Then there are those who have tools to take with them as well, where would they put the tools ? :shrug:

 

Yup, almost 60% of it. Ridiculous really.

 

Hopefully, much of that goes into public transportation.

 

To be honest, I'm not really sure what percentage of it is spend on what.
I have to correct my earlier figure of 'almost 60%', by the way. It turns out to be about 65%.

 

That suggest an ugly truth doesn't it? If the government feels hard up for money, it knows how to get it fast doesn't it? Anyway here in Washington state during that last couple of months the price has gone from under $3.00/gal to 3.53/gal for regular. I am holding my breath for the next couple of months though.

 

I think this is very temporary or at least it should be. When the uncertianty in Libya is resolved oil and gasoline prices should nosedive back to the $90 barrel level.

 

out of interest what sort of fuel consumption do our american brethren generally expect from your cars?

there's a perception over here in the civilised world that you all trundle around in huge gas guzzling mostrosities with suspension like a dodgy bedspring, all the handling finesse of an arthritic rhino, and fuel consumption of 20mpg is considered economical.

Yes. Although you have it wrong about the handling. The 2011 Mustang GT with 412 hp gets 20 city, 30 highway, and handles pretty well for a live rear axle. It will compare very favorably to the BMW M3 and gets about the same mileage. You don't think those autobahn speedsters get good gas mileage do you?

 

That sounds like a car I had in high school over 40 years ago, when gas was still under 50 cents/gal. Personally I find that description you gave to be impossible to anyone that's never owned one of those cars. Did someone sell you a lemon once, and your still pissed about it?

 

I own a Honda 4 cylinder wagon that gets around 24 mpg, and I bought it thinking it would do considerably better.
I would rather own a tiny diesel pickup, but such things are extremely hard to come by in the states.

And...sigh, I will soon have to drop a rebuilt tranny into the Honda,as it's slipping-it won't downshift for hard accelerations hardly at all anymore...and I doubt I can afford to have it converted over to a stick shift.
I really, really miss driving a standard.

I'm thinking about taking the backseat out, because I use the car more like a cargo van/truck...so it rather makes sense, no?

These days I try to drive as slowly as I have time to do... I just don't slow for turns at all. This conserves momentum, you see. It leads to to some rather alarmed passengers, if I happen to have any.

The car manages a turn rated for 40 miles per hour at 60, 65, and 70 mph just fine.

Of course if I'm carrying pallets or anything else heavy in the back handling and acceleration's compromised.

I am going to be learning to ride a motorbike this coming weekend and plan on getting a motorbike shortly-it will rapidly pay for itself, even riding only on sunny days.
I have a long commute.
