Man Imitates America's Army, Saves Lives

AmericasarmyA North Carolina man who saw an SUV flip and roll on a highway last November was able to provide medical aid to the victims with skills he learned from the America's Army, say the videogame's makers.

Paxton Galvanek pulled one of the passengers out of the smoking car, then found another bleeding heavily from his hand where his fingers had been lost during the crash.

"I used a towel as a dressing and asked the man to hold the towel on his wound and to raise his hand above his head to lessen the blood flow which allowed me to evaluate his other injuries which included a cut on his head," Galvanek said in a letter to the America's Army design team.

Galvanek said he learned about controlling bleeding from playing section two of the "medic" class training in America's Army, a game developed by the Army as a recruitment tool.

"I have received no prior medical training and can honestly say that because of the training and presentations within America's Army, I was able to help and possibly save the injured men," Galvanek said.

The press release mentions that this is the second time that skills developed from playing America's Army have been used to give people medical care in dire situations, but doesn't provide any details on the first incident.

That's a load of rubbish Draqon, It's been stated many times before that the people that usually do those shooting spree's might be told to say it's video games by their lawyers so people have someone to blame and sue other than the piece of shit that shot people.

There are many positive uses of video gaming, while I'd still suggest that many urban myths might be just to promote the game in question others do still ring true. Many games can be based on various physics information, or real data (Like stock market simulations) and can benefit people not just from what they learn in regards to information from the ones based on historical factors but also in regards to how a person develops in regards to adapation. (Playing many different games with many different interfaces is itself a problem solving dilemma.)

Admittedly not all games have yet got to the point of adapting real information into the make up, so that people learn while playing. this is why only a few have stood out in that regards. (For instance Sid Meier's stuff is usually filled with information, you could learn a lot about places in the Caribbean through "Pirates!" or certain historical factoids through "Civilization". Another great one for learning things was Elite 2 which shipped with a manual that explained about the actual physics used)

I guess you could say that games perhaps hold the key for certain people (ADHD, Autistics) to learn things that they can't normally learn through standardised learning methodologies.

Oooh, I'd play America's army, except it's too corny.. and has low graphics. I'm sticking to BF 2142, and Halo.

I was surrounded by a gang of thugs on the dark streets of Melbourne, many armed with tyre irons and baseballs bats. A couple even carried handguns and shotguns.

With true skill, I let forth a blast of "Force Lightning" from my fingertips, sending a couple of my assailants flying. I then ignited my lightsabre and used the yellow medium stance to deflect bullets, while switching to the blue fast stance to slice down my opponents. When the cops showed up to serve me a summons for carrying a concealed weapon (I mean, jeesh, how ridiculous is it that Australia law considers an unignited lightsabre in the pocket of your jeans a concealed weapon?! I had it because I was taking a cut lunch to school!), I activated Force Speed and Force Jump to hightail it out of there.

And all of this I owe to "Jedi Knight: Jedi Academy"

And don't even get me started on how all those Hentai PC games assisted me in improving my sex life...
