After all the hoopla about Guantanamo Bay, the truth finally comes out. Far from the house of horrors portrayed by many opponents of the Bush administration, it turns out to be "a loooot of fun!". In fact, Miss Universe Dayana Mendoza said it was so much fun, she didn't want to leave.

And she found being waterboarded "More like a spa treatment than anything else".

Fortunately for her, she is quite good looking. As Frank Zappa phrased it in Valley Girl, "Tosses her head and flips her hair, she's got a whole lot of nothing in there...."

I could have a good time at Alcatraz, but it doesn't mean I would enjoy being locked up there.

Its about time the truth came out about how the US is treating prisoners in Cuba. Maybe now the fussy people will quiet down.

Maybe now we won't have to because Obama is closing it.

I'm looking for the smiley, the wink, the hint that that is a sendup or something like - - - nothing.

The phrase "jumping the shark" comes to mind. Can we finally take it for granted that not only are these people misled in their politics, they're utterly ridiculous - comical denizens of a fantasy world better suited to be drawn in crayon on the asylum walls than given serious attention in any kind of actual policy debate?

    Ice,

I don't like emoticons. They make me feel like a 12 year old girl. But, since your sarcasm detector is on the fritz:

    .

Of course I don't believe the vapid testimony of Ms Universe is proof that GITMO is a great place to be. I just thought this was a funny story, especially the way Ms Universe decribes GITMO as "a loooot of fun!" When you're hot enough to be chosen as Ms Universe, people are very nice to you no matter where you go. That's even more so on some remote army base.

PS You and Tiassa apparently have the same difficulty telling when I'm kidding. I guess it's hard to notice the nuances from so far on the opposite side of the political spectrum.

Of course Guantanimo Bay is a beautiful place, it's where Castro was building a resort for himself when the Bay of Pigs invasion happened.

There's nothing "of course" about that, unfortunately.

If you don't remember what kinds of bizarre nonsense have been not only presented, but emphasized and repeated and defended and elaborated and so forth, by the rightyrant polemicists dominating the American public milieu for so many years now,

    I do.

How does this differ from quoting some government propaganda flack describing waterboarding as "discomfort" and "not really torture" ?

You guys have no credibility left - there is no presumption of common sense or ordinary reason that can be safely applied to anything you say.

Well, from the perspective of the Iceaura Bizarro world, that may well be true.

And from the perspective of everyone else replying to this thread, and the great majority of those responding to your other supposedly sarcastic threads - either in support or objection.

It seems to be an increasingly widespread perspective, this inability to distinguish sendup and joke from sincerely proferred opinions of the talk radio school of thought.

Because I am still not convinced that you did, in fact, post this thread as merely a mock of a beauty queen for fatuity, traditional and expectable as such a motive would be. I think you are also downplaying the nature of Gitmo, and obscuring the reality of what was done there, and enabling the current attempts to Bowdlerize the history of that prison.

You've got such an ax to grind, such a distorted view of people with views different from your own, that you insist upon assigning nefarious motives to the posting of a puff piece about a beauty queen. Give me a break.

(see, I even used emoticons that time. I hope they helped).

I wouldn't go so far as nefarious motives - just a general state of motivation, accepted by you as normal background circumstances.

Whatever. Meanwhile, an embarrassed Miss Universe organization has removed Ms Mendoza's blog about how much she loved GITMO from their website:

"Whatever" means that after you have pushed a certain number of threads in which you worry about things like enviro-nazis taking away your favorite brand of toilet paper, or Obama being a secret Muslim, or the Democrats in the House not showing bipartisanship, or Al Gore flying in jet planes with large carbon footprints, or CIA agents having to reveal their methods so the terrorists can train to resist them, you can't expect people to suddenly recognize that this time it's a sendup, too ridiculous for you to mean seriously.

It's like Hannity or Beck or Limbaugh or Hume faking ludicrous outrage over invented slights to Palin's husband, as a self parody, and then wondering why nobody got the joke.
