Qtrax, is a new P2P file-sharing, now relaunched as a legal service.
Users will get free music, but Qtrax is now ad-supported and the free songs are in the proprietary 'mpq' format that can only be played for limited number of times on the computer to which they were initially downloaded.
Each time the track is played, the Qtrax player will offer click-to-buy purchasing and suggest that users pay a flat monthly fee to upgrade to a premium subscription service.
This will provide unlimited downloads in Windows Media format which can be transferred to any digital music player except Apple's iPod.

Interesting, why not buy them off Amazon.com?

Why not buy anything at all? French Jamendo is absolutely free and all the music there is licensed under creative commons.

p.s. They are redesigning their site now, so click the link to the old version for full functionality that hasn't been incorporated in the new version yet.

There is nothing wrong with paying for music.
i just prefer to get my music for free. This is just a legal way to do it which some people may prefer.

there are reports that qtrax doesn't actually have the agreements with the music labels as they claimed. Any updates on the status of this service?

Any of you guys try it yet?
