I'm looking for cool games to waste time with, as I have grown quite sick of Free Cell and Spider solitare.

    Any suggestions?

Suggestion - be sure to use a joystick when playing games that require a joystick. Otherwise, they wont be very fun.

That suggestion comes free of charge

If you like real-time strategy games there's Netstorm: Islands at War. It's abandonware (free) now. Basically you build bridges to reach other islands and attack them using all sorts of cannons and weapons. It can be really fun for a while and I think there are still people playing on the multiplayer server.

    Download here.

Role-playing games based on the D&D style of combat. Quite a selection of free demos that have impressive demos. This web site hosts the downloads and will describe any particular game better than I just did. Some games, such as the "Blades" edition of Exile or Avernum have map editors and user-made stories with custom graphics and a user-friendly interface.

Otherwise, for a quick fix, download a good chess game and try to beat the computer. Sadly I haven't yet, even though I can reverse moves after they've been played.

    the original doom.
believe it or not this game is compatible with every version of windows from 95 onward. it wouldn't surprise me at all if it was compatible with 3.1

anyway theres nothing to install. create a folder called doom, drag all the game components into it, create a desktop icon linking to the doom launcher, you're good to go.

i've got so many doom wads i need 3 CDs to hold them.
    i even have erics wads.

I would suggest a text based RP game, but that may not be to your liking. They can be a little heavy when you first start off, but I'll recommend one anyways.

Once you do get going, it becomes very addictive.
