I'm not good with words but when I say format, I mean the way it looks and works. Doesn't Sci-forums appear a bit dull? Don't tell me you've never thought about that. I'm bring up the question and or suggestion about sci-forums' format, and possible change. Do you think this is a good idea? Would you vote to change it? If you could? And, if changed, would you want it to be? Why? existabrent
` I think it's coarse, rather than fine... I mean - of course - it's fine. I find it fine... because I have the site bookmarked. My sole complaint might be a preference for the old site host, because they allowed one to customize the color of the screen. I used to like a black background with green text. (At least I think it was this place that did that...) This works for me, though... Well... not really... But I mean it functions - which is good. At least make a handful of different layouts we can choose from, like some other forums do. That way, the people who want change can have it, and the ones who think we're fine the way we are can still have their way.
I like it. It's uncluttered, and it's the easiest forum I visit to read. That is, out of all the forums I visit, sciforums is easiest to read, easier on the eyes.
Creating forum skins isn't particular easy, theres alot of mucking around to make sure that the code is compatible with the layout and that the images show correctly (For instance transparency works in GIFs with all image browser I know of, but PNG doesn't work with Internet Explorer) It can take months to write a layout from scratch, and if people want a selection you have to then multiply that by the choices they want. In short it's alot of work, the only potential alternative is if those sciforumers out there want to create your own skins for sciforums, which Porfiry could check out and perhaps use if people think of them as good enough. Personally I think it's not so much about glitter, lights and dazzling heights, it's just about the ability to read peoples contents.
I'm surprised no one has mentioned ready-made skins. I Googled 'vBulletin', which I believe is the software SF is based on, and got these sites: http://www.vbstyles.com/ http://www.nbsdesignz.com/ http://www.vbulletin.com/forum/forumdisplay.php?f=26 Those are a good start. These ready-made skins could be used either as they are or as a starting point in the designing of a new skin, so that no one has to start from scratch. Some skins out there would cost Porf money, but surely some people here could donate money towards it.
Since sciforums seems to be having problems merely existing, I would recommend against shelling out on new skins. If you can't pay the rent, don't buy wallpaper.
I find the format clear and simple. Much better than trying to navigate my school's website Please Register or Log in to view the hidden image! I also find it elegant.
I disagree. The keep-SciForums-existing donation drive is coming along pretty well. And like I said before, we could have members chip in for the skins that cost money, meaning we could have a second, separate donation drive. Or we can just get the free ones. An alternative is if someone here who's skilled with coding volunteered to make a skin or two.
Well hey, I just got some money, got myself out of debt (well except for student loans and loans from other people)... when I get my cash in the bank, I am putting $5 in !!! Please Register or Log in to view the hidden image! who is with me!?!?!?!?!?
