View Full Version : Forget skateboarding, here comes parkour!
Syzygys 05-02-08, 08:59 PM A new sport to break your bones:
http://youtube.com/watch?v=nHyoKC3C0bg
At least this one is quiet and you can use it for burglary too...
Actually my fav Japanese gameshow, Ninja Warrior uses elements of parkour.

A new sport? Dude, the scene was hardfuckingcore in France like 10 years ago. it wasn't even new then, it was going through a revival at the time. District 13 came out in 2004 http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0414852/. The guy who did that was free running way before that too. Glad you caught on in the end though ;)
Syzygys 05-02-08, 09:47 PM OK, let's ask how many forumers heard about the term. It is definiately NEWER than skateboarding...
I also apologize for missing the French Parkour Revolution. My bad.
...and where was Youtube 10 years ago?
shorty_37 05-02-08, 10:30 PM Never heard of it before. I wouldn't dare try it either. I remember what happend
in highschool when we had to jump over that horse thingy. I also remember I dreaded
when the teacher would drag out the high jumping mat lol.
Creeptology 05-02-08, 10:55 PM I heard about it a few years ago as one of my kids loves it, he's an awesome climber/jumper, can't wait 'til he's older to see what he can really do. We watched a lot of documentaries about it, I reckon he might be the next seb foucan.
Parkour/free running or whatever you want to call it is probably older than skateboarding. Some links back to WW1 guy who became a firefighter and trained in it to help save difficult to rescue people, apparently a few places trained units of people with those skills, made more popular by george hebert. David Belle and Seb Foucan are the modern pioneers who turned it into the urban art form (but seb does lots in natural surrounding on rock formations and the like) but it's been around longer. There are a load of films too, from documentaries to action films made as excuse to showcase the art and traditional feature films (including new diehard and new james bond films). Luc Besson (he's great I have most his stuff) made a lot. Just a few film links is you are interested, I recommend you watch them syz you will love them (district 13 is good too, I've seen that, Luc Besson again)

Check out seb and belles blogs too. Guy called hubert (cant remember first name) inspired lots. They had a rooftop race in my city the other year. I missed it but my dad seen it, said it was great. I wouldn't try it myself, I can just about do forward rolls :p Ahh found one of early guys involved http://www.urbanfreeflow.com/the_core_level/pages/archives/methode_naturelle.htm
george hebert
Creeptology 05-02-08, 11:08 PM Another film I loved with a little in is Taxi (french one by luc besson (yeah I am a big fan), not the dreadful american remake) http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0152930/
Try and get that, it's mainly car and bike stunts though. Not effects, all traditional stuntmen. Can't remember if it's taxi or taxi 2 ( http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0183869/ ) with a pizza delivery motobike pyramid, looks incredible. He made the film as a stunt showcase. It's funny too.
parkour is not a new sport...its just named like that by French like they invented it and they did not invent it.
Syzygys 05-03-08, 06:39 AM Babythrowing isn't new either, it is a 500 years old Indian tradition, but got famous only now. Get used to it.
I read in the Bible that skateboarding was invented by Noah, while in the desert, so it is definiately older than parkour....
Syzygys 05-03-08, 07:00 AM parkour is not a new sport...
When was the last time IF ever you saw somebody doing it? I saw skateboarders in the 70s. OH, you weren't even born.
"A number of surfing manufacturers such as Makaha started building skateboards that resembled small surfboards, and assembling teams to promote their products. The popularity of skateboarding at this time spawned a national magazine, Skateboarder Magazine, and the 1965 international championships were broadcast on national television. "
Anyway, this thread is not about stupid arguments but discussing a new sport. I liked the guy swinging on the tree video. I love Besson too. I wonder what is the hurt rate, compared to other sports, like skateboarding...

Creeptology 05-03-08, 08:15 AM Yeah done wrong syz I reckon the hurt rate is high. I remember seb foucan talking about visualising what he was going to do for quite a while before he attempted it. He just ran through it in his head over and over. He recommended everyone does this or injuries happen easy. I suppose with preparation then injury rate is low.
Syzygys 05-03-08, 08:20 AM I would assume that injury rate is lower than skateboarding but when it happens, it is more serious.
There was this guy who was fastclimbing this 40 or so feet sculpture, if you miss, you definiately get hurt...
Those guys should try out Ninja Warrior, half of the obstacles are like pakour... very few non-Asians are on the show....(maybe because money isn't involved)
I would assume that injury rate is lower...

it's not just injuries...its death as well
They get good at it, they feel like they are free of gravity, they want to feel like they can fly, so they up-grade their obstacles...until they find an obstacle that takes their life.
cosmictraveler 05-03-08, 09:11 AM All of this running and jumping reminds me of people on crack cocaine! Anyone ever check these people to see if they have ingested some drug of some type? I don't really get the idea of just running around and jumping over stuff looks pretty stupid if you ask me. I guess when you don't have money to buy a skateboard or other play toy this form of activity is a way to let loose.
Syzygys 05-03-08, 01:54 PM Well, it is the challenge, plus you don't need extra stuff, you just use what is already aviable.
Plus every new stucture is a new challenge, a different approach. Also useful if you don't want to play for tickets, you are able to get over the fence...
Creeptology 05-03-08, 01:57 PM I reckon if you prepare it's not ask risky as it initially seems. It's lack of preparation that leads to mistakes, mistakes lead to injury and deaths. Yet no amount of preparation can stop all accidents, they will always happen, there is always the unforeseen. Even if you do factor in the possibilities of something going wrong, other conditions can change your initial plans of action should difficulty arise, such as reaction time, over confidence, weather change and so on.
I've seen chimpanzees practicing this new sport.
I thought that was called Free Running ?
Il est synonymous my likkle chucky egg.
