Part of a sci-fi story, I want ot get more background on it:

shields are frequently used in sci-fi to serve as or to augment permanent armor. Upon thinking about how To make a practical one without breaking the laws of physics, I came up with this, based on the theory that is used in vacuum energy: A device extends the spontaneous particles' existance in this universe to the point that an increase in density occurs. The field is projected above the ships' armor, adding to the material that must be penetrated before damage is caused. Since the material being used is not created or projected by the ship, all you need is a sa part of the power plants output reserved for the "shields." After impact, more particles appear, regenerating the field.

Commments, please?

Basically controlling virtual particles? Is that what you're talking about?

I'm not sure what the theory is called, but it says that in empty space, particles appear out of the blue, cancel each other out, and dissappear. Vacuum energy was suposed to harness the energy produced. My idea was to hold these partcles in reality long enough to produce a space with a significant density.

this is stated in one of hawkings theories, that the readiation seen leaking out of black holes is the absence of the canceling particle, one goes in, the other escapes, so it may be possible to hold the particle in reality long enough to form a region of higher density, but the problem maybe getting the particles to appear in the first place, it'd do no good to have a feild of them if their not appearing in sufficiant density to form a shield in the first place

but the problem maybe getting the particles to appear in the first place The field doesn't affect their appearance, it affects their duration in this universe. If you hold one until a second can appear, you maintain the density. If you wait until two more appear before you let the first one go, you have increased the density. Picture a cup with a hole in the bottom. If you are pouring water in at the same rate, and it goes out at the same rate, the amount stays the same. The shield generator reduces the size of the hole in the bottom of the cup to let the density build, then establishes an equilibrium to hold the shield up. By closing it again, you can regenerate the shield.

but what if particles appear at a rate of only 10 per second in the entire volume of space that your sheild apparatus can control? then how can you get a sufficient denisity of particles to stop anything? if the particles spontaneously exist in a useable form, okay, but the particles need to come into existence in a resonably large quantity to be useful at stopping anything, i wouldnt want to rely on a ten atom shield, not thickness, total, they'd have to be at exactly the right place to have even the slightest effect on the object/weapon being deflected, repeled, destroyed. I admit though im not really up to speed on the vacuum energy theories, does anyone know the rate at which particles appear and annihilate themselves compared to the density of the vacuum? I'll do some research, but i'm pretty sure its easily relatable to the amount of hawking radiation emitted from a black hole

I have a theory on how we might be able to make a low power force field but i would like to hear others b4 i explain it i have it somewhere written down on my home comp.;)

o i meant other theories no matter how dumb u think they are on how to possibly make a force field.

What is a "force field"?

Redshift,

o i meant other theories no matter how dumb u think they are on how to possibly make a force field.

I don't know.....

Maybe two strong electromagnetic fields oscillating at "specific" frequencies. Don't ask for details, 'cause I don't have any. :)

o hehehehehe
well thats shields im talking bout forcefields like to put in doorways they r different than shields i think.(or they are point defences version of the shield);)

i am going to do some research on the Fedaration's shield technology. it might take some time.

My idea was to augment armor on the outside of a vehicle. I suppose you could make a wall out of such a field, it depends on the properties of the matter in the field.

that is kind of wat my idea was like. 2 high power waves going at each other in an interference pattern but are made to harmonize with each other.

I find that an extreme disregard for personal hygiene works very well as a force field.

Also If we can make a force field, could we shape it as a ramp and drive out into space on it.
