Have you ever gotten your hopes up about buying something on craigslist only to find out the person selling the item is a complete moron, a fickle tard or possibly both?

I am starting to think that there are so few "real" deals to be had on CL that it's not worth the aggravation and disappointment wading through the BS.

What about you and your Craigslist experiences? Have they been all positive or have you had your fair share of incompetents as well?

No, I have had good experiences. I bought a homebuilt recumbent bike frame for $20!

Never bought anything thru it but one ad really made me angry last week. The ad read: 03 American Stratocaster $500.00.

Thinking I found the one true deal out there I eagerly click the link.
Then my heart sank as I looked at the picture. This idiot with a knife had CARVED the word H E A R T B R E A K E R through the finish in about 2 1/2 inch letters on this otherwise beautiful black Fender guitar.

    A Heartbreaker indeed.

Is an 03 actually a decent axe? I could understand a 68 or even a 70s Strat, but an 03...

I should talk eh? I have both a late 90s and an 05-06 Deluxe American P-Bass. I LOVE those things because the necks are just best ever to my hands. I honestly quit paying attention that stuff (vintages and all) years ago. I sold an old 78 Fender Jazz Bass on eBay for 3 times what I paid for it when I bought it used 10-15 years prior. The Jazz Basses just got too small for me.

I have gotten a few decent deals on Craigslist, but the real test for me is whether the person will give you their phone number and address when you contact them. I HATE it when you contact someone and they agree to sell something that they later don't want to. You know what happened, someone just offered them more. That's disappointing, and whereas I can't really blame the seller for taking the higher offer, (even though I feel like I want to punch them in the face) they could be honest and explain their situation. At least that way I could up the bid by choice and not just be cut out of the deal all together. People can be so plastic, NOT that plastic is a bad thing mind you.

My understanding is that Craigslist has become a haven for rip off artists and cons. There is clearly some credible deals and good people buying and selling goods and services, but it is definitely a site where "Caveat Emptor" is the primary guideline.

I found a great Mesa Boogie amp, 24 track Yamaha mixing board, (2) 32 band EQ's and a huge 1400 Watt SUNN Amp to drive it all.

Cool! That's some heavy ass gear there. Boogies and Legends are two of my favorite 6 string amps. They are warm, mean and super ballzy.

Does anyone know what the rip off and con jobs consist of? I mean, what tactics are commonly being attempted and exercised?

I totally agree. It's (in ANY situation) always "buyer beware"

IDK. Here It's hard to find an american strat under 1000.00 usd (1300.00 eur) these days regardless of the year. I can get excited about 40-50% off. And none deserves to be scarred up with a cheesy pet name.

I have a 76 les paul and a few others, recently decided I had to have a strat so I've looked at a thousand of them over the last month or so. I can't afford one now but I'm price watching for future reference.
As for a 68 ,I just saw one for about 13 grand.

pffft, no guitar is worth that much money to me.

Generally, I don't ever think to look at CL.

That escort I bought from craigslist turned out to be a bit less attractive than advertised, but she wasn't bad. She was a bit too tight for my tastes.

But seriously. I bought a 1999 Ford Ranger from there for $3000 in excellent condition. I think they guy just wanted to get rid of it quick because he could have got more for it.
