Wow, firefox has lost all my bookmarks, my bookmark bar and it defaults to firefox google page. It is also asking for prompts on certain issues so it seems to have lost its security settings. It seems to have suffered a total wipeout!!!

Does anyone know how I can get back this info?

I really need that info so any help would be much appreciated. I'm running vista with firefox 2.0.0.1.2

Sorted. Firefox holds a backup of your bookmarks for the last 5 days. Once you can get to these files you can then restore them. Its a pain in the arse but I am pleased to have them back.

Another backup option - You can also "export" the bookmarks, and it saves them as a separate HTML formatted file. You can put it in a safe place, and restore it at a later date if needed.

Click on bookmarks > organize bookmarks > file > export.

this most often happens during an upgrade of firefox... going back to mozilla...

the upgrade fails to detect every running process of firefox and the bookmarks and user settings are disconnected... since the upgrade to 2.0.0.12 just got pushed, it's almost 100% this is what happened in your case...

i have an AOL email i use to mail copies of my bookmarks to myself with... and i leave them on the server for backups... funny thing is AOL is much more sophisticated in it's handling of attachmetns than Gmail in this area... Gmail auto parses and you can kiss your HTML backup file goodbye... in fact i use the massive amounts of free storage on email servers to back up many files... they have redundancy and backup solutions that are beyond most user abilities... though i do run Veritas Backup Exec and do complete backups to tape on my network... i still use the free storage... there is gigs and gigs of free backup available to everyone... most just don't think of it that way... back on topic...

you can get to know the filenames and file locations to deal with an occurrence like this...

the path to profiles is usually...

~/.mozilla/firefox/xxxxxxxx.default/ on Linux...

C:\WINDOWS\Application Data\Mozilla\Firefox\Profiles\xxxxxxxx.default\ on 95/98/ME...

C:\Documents and Settings\\Application Data\Mozilla\Firefox\Profiles\ on 2K/XP...

C:\users\[User Name]\AppData\Roaming\Mozilla\Firefox\Profiles\ on Vista...

~/Library/Application Support/Firefox/Profiles/xxxxxxxx.default/ on MacOSX...

also...

type about:config in the address bar and hit 'enter' on firefox and look around a bit...

also look here... my favorite customization is to disable the 'context menu prevent' some crafty web designers use to make the right click menu, and 'save as' disabled... you can beat that in most cases...... i damn well want to right click and grab any image i want... still won't beat the flash stuff... but saves you a screenshot and a gimp edit and that's [U]money...
