    agree

I think he hasn't understood basic things about science...

Hmmm tricky one. What if he believed Aliens seeded Earth 3 years ago and built Earth in situ at that time including planting all our memories.... oh and we were grown in large vats hidden on the dark side of the moon...

YES he deserved to be fired.

Is it also fair to fire a scientist whose religion conflicts with science, even if he's very qualified for his job?

    Agreed.

But he wasn't qualified. His rejection of evolutionary fact made his ability to analyze various structures in the zebrafish impossible. His conclusions on the origins and functions of various biological structures in different zebrafish species would all be highly suspect and almost certainly invalid.

If he wasn't qualified, then he wouldn't have been a scientist in the first place. And you still didn't answer my question.

Really? There are no bad scientists in the world? Interesting...

I don't believe that is what I said (or implied). Also, feel free to answer the question, my friend.

I suppose it depends on his job. One may be an absolute GREAT computer scientist and also a devout Scientologist. Because the person's job is to sit in a office and write code it really isn't going to matter. This was a case of a biologist rejecting a basic biological fact.

It'd kind of be like being an atheistic Imam.

    You didn't ask a question:

I believe that is what you clearly implied in your statement.

In any event, there are plenty of unqualified or incompetent scientists and engineers in the world just waiting to be fired. I've been present at a number of them myself over the years. Still, not a pleasant thing to have to do.

If you're not allowed to deviate from the standard biological perspective, then what hopes do we have of ever advancing? That is unless you are under the assumption that everything we "know" today is perfectly accurate (with no area for improvement).

See the "?" symbol at the end? That's a question mark.

    Oh, you mean this question?

If he's qualified, meaning that his religion is not in conflict with his job duties? Of course not.

    Not very clear, are we?

A religious person who doesn't believe in evolution can be more knowledgeable and better qualified at his job than an scientist who merely believes what his text books have told him.

And my question was not specified to this one scientist.

Almost every religion conflicts with science, in some way.

Almost no scientists get fired for their religion - few take jobs that conflict with their beliefs.

If religion conflicts with job the person quits or is fired, normally. No problem.
