"Maximum Leader" has just admitted to the fact that "The Cuban model doesn't even work for us any more.".

So now how about Michael Moore and His (in)famous movie?

    What is going on?

    "Maximum Leader"

    • He feels responsible for the "great injustice" of the persecution of Cuban homosexuals in the 1970s.

    • He laments Jewish suffering over the centuries, defends Israel's right to exist and accuses Iran's president Mahmoud Ahmadinejad of antisemitism.

    • He appears to regret urging the Soviet Union to nuke the US during the 1962 missile crisis. "After I've seen what I've seen, and knowing what I know now, it wasn't worth it all."

Is the heavy breath of God, time, and mortality blowing down the spine of the "Maximum Leader" with the Big Chill, and is the "Maximum Leader" now looking to get right with God before the big date with St. Peter at the Pearly Gates?

I'm sure certain members will just say this is Western propaganda or some likeminded distorted translation, etc.

One can argue that he knew this long before now - like when the USSR disintegrated. He was just foolhardy and didn't want to lose 'face'. Maybe age and a couple of close calls with his health have made him 'come out' with it, but from what I understand, it seems he only wishes to 'modify' the current flavour of communism - not swop it for capitalism.

    Unfortunately, Capitalism is also failing.

Profit and Government Representation are both archaic, unsustainable, and corruptible concepts.
Government Representation was created in a time of outdated populous communication methods, and levels. It has led currently to slow government response and expensive complexity in systems management failure.

Profit has done likewise, with the added dismal result of it's incentives driving personal accomplishment goals, over system "generational sustainability-over-time" necessities.

Both concepts need to be "upgraded" voluntarily, ahead of world-wide system failure, which may demand it.

Exactly. Since it is BR, let's quote W:

George W. Bush: "Capitalism doesn't work anymore so we had to bail out a few banks."

It's not an indictment of socialism at all. The Cuban model doesn't work, that much is obvious to anyone who has been there. Complete government control over industry doesn't work, but neither does laissez faire capitalism. The middle path of capitalism with regulation and socializing key institutions like health care (the European model) is the most likely to succeed.

Undisturbed experimentation cells (democratic states) were intentionally conceived (Jeffersonian), to test new governing designs, without worry of failure disturbing "the whole". This use of democracy has never really been implemented to any real degree.

Very good points Spidergoat. There was a report published today, the Global Competitiveness Report which ranks nations by their economic and political success. Funny thing, The United States was number 4 on the list. And who was above the US on the list - those often cited horrors of socialism by the American right wing - Sweden and Switzerland. You know those silly socialists who do radical things like provide universal healthcare to their citizens.

    http://www.weforum.org/en/initiatives/gcp/Global Competitiveness Report/index.htm

One of the factors causing the US to sink in the rankings is the political risk associated with American right wing whacko extermism. I am sure the limbaugh listeners will discount the rankings as an international socialist plot of some sort rather than to do anything seriously like introspect.

    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Global_Competitiveness_Report
"The report "assesses the ability of countries to provide high levels of prosperity to their citizens. This in turn depends on how productively a country uses available resources. Therefore, the Global Competitiveness Index measures the set of institutions, policies, and factors that set the sustainable current and medium-term levels of economic prosperity."

It is about time Castro smelled the roses and realized his mistakes...better late than never. His brother who is now the head of state, has been admitting that communism has not worked for Cuba for some time now. I am sure the us embargo on Cuba has not helped.

He never said anything that simple and accurate. He said stuff like this: http://www.dubyaspeak.com/economist

Once again Castro speaks more accurately and honestly than his enemy heads of State.

    Old and familiar pattern.

Authoritarian leftwing government works poorly while embargoed and assaulted by incredibly wealthy and powerful neighboring States. Authoritarian rightwing government fails utterly while receiving massive infusions of money and other aid from those same States.

For fifty years, Cuba has been protected from Haiti's fate. That's something, but the price was tyranny, however enlightened. Now it faces the next manifestation of the neighborhood threat.

Capitalism doesn't work? since when do we have free market capitalism in this country? let alone anywhere else in the world.

Capitalism was murdered by FDR and the New Deal, and LBJ and the Great Society.

Capitalism does work, it's cyclic and undergoes ups and downs, but that's part of what makes it work. Attempts by the government to prevent the natural business cycle are like the forest service putting out every little forest fire. It creates conditions ripe for a massive disaster that does more damage than all the little fires that were preventted would have.

Yes, but latest recession is not an example of the boom and bust cycle, it's something different.

Capitalism does work, I think there is little doubt of that. However, what makes you think that government is trying to prevent the natural business cycle and that attempts to do so cause more damage than letting all of the little fires burn?

Let me remind you that the Great Depression occured because government was not active in managing the business cycle. Moreover, the infrastructure needed for capitalism to flourish, had some major sink holes in it. Those sink holes were subsequently pactched. And the economy remained pactched until a Republican Congress and a Democrat president blew up the roadway in 1999....followed by a president who failed to enforce the remaining patches put in place after the Great Depression.

And two, depressions were not an uncommon occurance before the Keynesian era. So please explain how regulation of banks and insuring bank deposits has been harmful to the economy. And please explain how managing the money supply to prevent excessive inflation and/or depression has been a bad thing. Let me remind you the nation has not seen any thing as bad as a depression since the Great Depression...since government implemented Keynesian style economic management.

Capitalism is not without its troubles... excessive accumulation of capital and the formation of monoplies. Both of which eat away at the foundations of a capitalistic system. And therefore they both must me managed in order to keep the system running effectively. Put in more simple terms, a thriving capitalist economy needs a thriving middle class.

No, we have HUGE doubts about that. As BR pointed out there hasn't been a free market capitalism in the US for a while now.

Excuse me, but that is not required in a free market capitalism. The market is supposed to regulate and correct itself. But we can see to what result...

Oh yes, and as an extra, so far ALL world wars were started between capitalist countries...
