View Full Version : Favourite Cars?
Coolies! 09-27-07, 01:43 PM Now I'm no car buff really I only know cars that are around now. So my faves are Aston Martin DB 9, Jaguar S type, and any new Mustang, but they don't sell them in Europe so I'd have to import 1 and then the streering wheel would be on the wrong side which would make me look stupid.
I do also have a soft spot for most BMWs most Audis and most Volkwagans, also the new Vauxhall Astra is goregous and the new Vauxhall Corsa is good but they both suspiciously look like the newer Ford Fiestas.
i do like lambourghinis and hummers in the citay. i like all convertibles.
Nikelodeon 09-27-07, 01:54 PM The Robin Reliant
spuriousmonkey 09-27-07, 01:55 PM The one that smashed Lady Di against solid concrete.
Coolies! 09-27-07, 01:59 PM Oh nice comment spurious, trying to be controversial I see. well ha ha ha arn't you funny
spuriousmonkey 09-27-07, 02:00 PM Oh nice comment spurious, trying to be controversial I see. well ha ha ha arn't you funny
I hardly believe it is controversial since most people share my sentiment.
Coolies! 09-27-07, 02:03 PM i do like lambourghinis and hummers in the citay. i like all convertibles.
Hummers are stupid cars they're only useful if you're invading a country. There is no room for them on britains roads, or the damn school run 4x4s but those women feel they need something like a tank to protect their dot of a child.
Yeah convertibles are good if ya live somewhere that isn't Britain, we've had 2 days of summer this year, and even the british summer useually isn't that bad. Last year the temperature records were broken and this year thousands of people had flooded homes.
Nikelodeon 09-27-07, 02:04 PM Then get an amphibious carboat.
Coolies! 09-27-07, 02:05 PM i'm sure there are people who wanted to stop hearing about Diana in the papers and stuff yeah but I was only 11 when she died so I hadn't really been annoyed by the medias obsession with her.
Coolies! 09-27-07, 02:06 PM Then get an amphibious carboat.
That would be a good idea that would be cool like James bond. But fortuately I don't live in any of the parts of the country that were affected by the floods so Yay me
As far as looks go, I like the Mercedes-Benz CLS63 AMG 030, but I'd rather have an eco-friendly car if I was going to spend the money to buy one for any reasn but to sell it again.
spuriousmonkey 09-27-07, 02:10 PM i'm sure there are people who wanted to stop hearing about Diana in the papers and stuff yeah but I was only 11 when she died so I hadn't really been annoyed by the medias obsession with her.
don't go off topic. This is a car thread.
mikenostic 09-27-07, 02:13 PM The one that smashed Lady Di against solid concrete.
 DAMNNNNNN!!! Why you hatin' on Di?
I'm a huge car nut. I love performance cars and would have one if I could afford one. Well I do, but it's a rather inexpensive one. *
Coolies, I wouldn't complain about cars you can't get in Europe because the cars that you CAN get in Europe are way cooler than most of the cars we can get here.
My favorite car:
A Pagani Zonda C12 Roadster.
-600 horsepower
-Mercedes 7.3 V12
-ridiculously fast and expensive
-underrated because it lives in Lambo and Ferrari's shadows

Another top mention:
Nissan Skyline GT-R (this is one car, Coolies, that I speak of that the U.S. doesnt' get )
-all-wheel-drive
-extremely modifyable engine capable of over 1000 hp
-one of the world's most popular tuner cars
http://chrisnz.com/wp-content/uploads/2006/05/GTR_NUR_R34_21.jpg
Coolies! 09-27-07, 02:14 PM I've already talked about cars I've got nothing more to say about them except that my test is on monday and if I pass I want a toyota yaris or just share my mums car. its a ford Ka colour coordinated which is important

If you like Bimmers, coolies, then you also know that the United States never got the Z1 either.
*This is my car here. It's a 2005 Subaru Impreza WRX/STi. These little rockets offer supercar performance at a fraction of the cost. And it is quite reliable and robust.

Coolies! 09-27-07, 02:18 PM very nice. American cars are boring except for the Mustangs. I knew that was a Zonda before I read your text, I reckonised it from Top Gear. You must get it on BBC in the USA Top gear is the best car show ever. they've had races across Europe, across the Artic, they went to america to drive for a while there and tempt hillbillies to kill them. its good watch it
Coolies! 09-27-07, 02:20 PM Oh my God you have a suburu? thats is the crap boy racing car, it look ridiculous especially with the usless roof scoop.
Coolies! 09-27-07, 02:21 PM well urs doesn't but iv seen them
one_raven 09-27-07, 02:22 PM I don't have a single favorite car, but I think the golden age for cars was 1964 - 1968.
Coolies! 09-27-07, 02:22 PM actully looking at urs its quite nice and shiny
Nikelodeon 09-27-07, 02:22 PM Suburu is cool.
mikenostic 09-27-07, 02:24 PM Oh my God you have a suburu? thats is the crap boy racing car, it look ridiculous especially with the usless roof scoop.
Coolies, you must not know much about the STi because the hood scoop and the rear wing are both functional. The top mount intercooler sits right under the hood scoop and it scoops in air. It also has a little water sprayer that sprays water onto the intercooler.
The rear wing in addition to channeling the air over the car, it also provides 50 lbs of downforce @ 100mph.
Ohhh, almost forgot...this is another one of my favorites, even before I bought one.
The 70-73 Datsun 240Z. Sexy, sexy lines on this car.

When they are not turned into silly, little riceboy race rockets then they are fine cars, but they are never "cool".

not everyone can afford a luxury race car. when you don't have a lot of money, especially young people they have to get creative. there is nothing uncool about that.
mikenostic 09-27-07, 02:37 PM When they are not turned into silly, little riceboy race rockets then they are fine cars, but they are never "cool".
Raven,
With the exception of a few turds, the vast majority of WRXs are tasteful, even when they have been extensively modded.
'Riceboy race rockets' is sort of an oxymoron. Most 'ricers' are more into the gawdy, flamboyant looks and accessories to make their cars appear faster, but they usually care nothing about actual performance. I do not represent that crowd, nor does any other Subie owner I know.
mikenostic 09-27-07, 02:39 PM Oh come on now
http://www.gofaststuff.com/graphics/Suburu.jpg
:D:D
Nick,
If the owner of that STi posted that pic on ClubWRX.net or NASIOC.com*, he would probably get flamed right off the message boards. No true tuner enthusiast would do that to their WRX.
Like I told Raven, those Lambo doors do nothing for performance, are only for looks, and the mounting equipment installed that allows the doors to operate add a lot of weight.

it depends on what you are doing. you don't need just a faster car to drift, you need handling. americans like to go faster and faster around circles but drifting is more about fun, precision and handling as well.

:bugeye:
Actually, most American gear heads are just concerned about acceleration in a straight line, and not just that, acceleration from a roll (they don't have enough driving talent to race from a standstill). It's pretty disappointing really. Not many of them put more emphasis on handling over acceleration.
I mean look at the powerful American cars, both of today and the past...
-Mustang; we all know that handling is not it's forte'
-Camaro/TransAm: same as Mustang
VERY few of the vintage American muscle cars were made for handling.
Drifting is looked down upon by anyone other than drifters and drifter fans. It's really more about showmanship than it is actual technical racing. If it was an advantage around turns, then NASCAR, F1, Indy, Champ cars, LeMans cars and such would drift around turns too.

tablariddim 09-27-07, 03:31 PM Where I live, truly exotic cars are very rare or non-existent but out of the few serious marques that do exist including some Ferrari's, Lambo's and Bentley Continentals, the only ones that always, I mean always make me turn my head, are the Porsche 911's especially the 997. I'm planning on getting one next year, even though it's probably one of the most impractical cars one can own in this tiny country with its rubbish roads, but it's that heart head thing and my heart's been into 911's ever since I owned one in the early 90's when I still lived in London.
My wife quite wisely suggests that I ought to get a Porche Cayenne or VW Touareg, but if practicality is the main criteria then I don't see the point in spending an extra 35 grand to replace my very practical and fast enough Rav4, except for the status factor, but I'm old enough and cynical enough to absolutely not really care about such shallowness. Now you're all saying, hang on, a 911 is more a fucking status symbol than a Touareg; well, yes sure it is, but the point is that I want it for Me, not for the fucking audience.

I'd have to agree...especially in that "baby diarrhea" green. :)
Meh, you understand nothing. That's a perfect vehicle.
Can go practically anywhere, enough space for cargo, sleep or other people.
Practically waterproof, roof and doors are detachable.
And it looks like an actual car, not those blown up plastic jeeps that are good enough only for city and carpet driving.

Fraggle Rocker 09-27-07, 09:51 PM Favorite car I ever had: 1987 Toyota Supra. The perfect sportscar for a guy who was an enthusiast but not a professional racer. Handled better than any car I've ever driven, set personal records on all my favorite mountain roads. Safer and more stable, in 90,000 miles I never got either end to break loose. Better acceleration, 6-speed gearbox. Really comfortable seat with an adjustable lumbar support. Comfortable ride for the wife, hatchback would hold a fair amount of stuff. I'll always miss it.
Sexiest car, 1982 Pontiac Trans-Am. Piece of crap really, burned out two transmissions and one computer plus a lot of other stuff. Handling was sporty but mediocre, easy to break loose, not a very confident feeling. Fast, but not as fast as the Supra, and only a 3-speed box. But an American-red T-A with a T-top, even without the screaming chicken decal of the earlier vintage, I got more looks than any car I've ever had. Even my wife enjoyed driving it and it rode like a truck. 14 miles per gallon, the most environmentally hostile vehicle I've ever owned, and it dropped to nine when the computer blew out.
Most disappointing: 1989 Porsche 928 S4. Apparently they were built to run 100,000 miles and this one had 95,000 when I bought it. I drove it from California to Maryland and had a perfectly wonderful ride. Not as quick as the Supra but more top-end, I floored it going up into the Rockies, looked down a few seconds later and I was going 120. Not as extreme handling but agile and cooperative, plenty of warning before anything broke loose. Very comfortable, safe and competent feeling, really pleasant to drive. Then once I got here it started to fall apart and it was impossible to fix it fast enough to keep up with it. Over the course of two years it was running for about eight months. I put a fortune into it and ended up selling it for scrap.
Best car: 1978 Mercedes-Benz 240D. The small diesel with a stick shift. We bought it new a year after we got married. We've still got it, 200,000 miles, still runs like new. No power but the damn thing really handles like a sportscar, so not having to slow down for the turns kind of makes up for it. This car's been everywhere, we even drove our brand new Mercedes all the way to Oaxaca, Mexico. 27 mpg, we'll probably keep it forever.
Stupidest car: When I was in high school my mother was just learning how to drive, not all that unusual for a woman of her generation. My dad bought her a brand new 1957 BMW Isetta 300. One door, the front of the car opened up. One-cylinder air-cooled motorcycle engine. One bench seat for two people or three in an emergency. Rear wheels closer together than the fronts, made it look like a 3-wheeler. About 18 horsepower, top speed 50mph. Left-hand stick shift, a motorcycle transmission retrofitted with a reverse gear, and NO synchromesh! She actually learned to drive in that thing, but it took her four tries to pass the driving test. I drove my girlfriend around town in it, being passed and stared at by everybody. It was stupid but kind of cute. I must have liked it, I went on to own four BMW motorcycles, one of which was a 250 with practically the same engine as the Isetta. Even it was really slow for a motorcycle! On BMW 2-wheelers I learned that the trick to shifting them with that massive transmission was to double-clutch. I wish I'd known that in 1957, the Isetta always made horrible crashing noises when shifting gears--just what we needed, even more attention.

The MKIII Supras were pretty nice cars, although they are overshadowed somewhat by the MKIV (93-98) Supras, and for good reason:
http://www.geocities.com/ma71supraturbo/pictures/97supra.jpg
Sexiest car, 1982 Pontiac Trans-Am.
While I loved the show Knight Rider when I was a kid, I really don't think K.I.T.T. was all that sexy of a car.
Most disappointing: 1989 Porsche 928 S4.
To this date, I still think that is the best looking Porsche from that era. I've also heard about it's reliability and longevity issues.
Best car: 1978 Mercedes-Benz 240D. The small diesel with a stick shift. We bought it new a year after we got married. We've still got it, 200,000 miles, still runs like new. This car's been everywhere, we even drove our brand new Mercedes all the way to Oaxaca, Mexico. 27 mpg, we'll probably keep it forever. It'll probably last forever too. Those older Mercs ran forever.
Even the 200+K mile L series engines that were in the 70-83 Datsun 240Zs and 810s/Maximas were based on a Mercedes engine blueprint.
If I can ever afford one of these to have as a fair-weather play toy, this is what I'm gettting:
An Ariel Atom
-Civic Type R or GM Ecotec engine
-300hp
-1100 lbs. curb weight.
http://mike-mcgrath.files.wordpress.com/2007/02/ariel-atom.gif
http://www.productanatomy.com/wp-content/uploads/2007/03/ariel-atom-2.jpg
This has similar acceleration to most 600 and 750cc sportbikes and will still keep up with 1000+cc sportbikes in the curves.

I mostly like the late 80's/early 90's ones although the S1 and S2 were pretty cool(mostly thanks to James Bond).
I also have a thing for Lamborghinis, particularly the Countach as it's so beautiful! Although the Diablo is cool and pretty much the only new car I like is the Gallardo.:)
mikenostic 09-28-07, 03:03 PM But fucking ugly!

Mitsubishi and Subaru can manufacture, market and sell high performance, street legal versions of their WRC cars (Evolution and WRX/STi) here in the U.S., then Ford can too.
Although there are kits available to convert the Focus to RWD and swap that puny 4 cylinder with a 4.6 liter V8 out of the Mustang.

If you install a supercharger don't increase boost over 10 PSI without first redoing the bottom end of the engine. It won't stand more pressur than that with just the regular setup that it has from the factory. Whenever you really want to get allot of power then about a 15 to 20 percent boost is required.

True, but the RWD conversion kit that would allow installation of the 4.6/5.0 V8 would be much better. For one reason, RWD > FWD.
For another, the V8 is much more receptive to engine/power mods, and has a much better aftermarket support.

I would actually say no more than 4 psi of boost if you left the engine unmodified. And it wouldnt be just the bottom end, it would be ECU, injectors, fuel pump, fuel pressure regulator and you would not be able to run anything less than 93 octane fuel in it.
I prefer a good looking car that will smoke the likes of your ugly Subaru - like my Magnum...
haha...not even if it had the Hemi engine in it.
Your Magnum(if it has the hemi) has a few more HP(not much) than my Subie, but it also has a few hundred more pounds of weight too. Not too mention the Subie is AWD, which means a slingshot launch with NO wheelspin. :D

the scion looks cool but i don't know anything about them.
Scion's are great little cars. In the US they have 2 versions, one is a very boxy type thing, which happens to be the most popular but, which I think is fucking ugly, and then there's the more curvy version, which I think is pretty cute. My wife drives the curvy version of a Japanese import, which is called Toyota IST in Japan, they are actually very similar to the Yaris, only with slightly stronger engines.

Here are the specs:
horsepower: 300@6000 rpm
torque: 300 lb/ft@4000 rpm
weight ~3250lbs (your Magnum weighs ~4100lbs)
0-60mph; 4.7 sec
1/4 mile ~13.0/1@99-102mph
The center differential is adjustable too. I can set it on auto and let the computer distribute traction or I can adjust the torque split percentage between the front/rear axles from 50/50 to 35/65.
As far as handling, it has so much grip, it's not even funny. Slow entry speed on curves but phenomenal exit speed. It will also handle on a wet/gravel/dirt road about as well as it will on dry tarmac.

Lotus Elise

Mitsubishi Lancer Evolution
What I like about these cars:
Both of these cars are inexpensive and cheap, but these cars have other things about them that make them interesting and different from your regular sports car.
The Lotus Elise Exige here is a pure sports car. It's tiny, has a high-revving engine (and it's under 200 hp) and yet manages to do 0-60 in under 4 seconds. The car itself has a curb weight of a scant 2,015 lbs. Drivers say it's uncomfortable, loud and is nimble as hell. It drives like a street-legal go-kart, basically. The car gets 30 mpg on the highway too.
The Mitsubishi Lancer Evolution X shown here has something like 300 hp, is pretty small in size, has sophisticated AWD, is a four-door sedan that can pack a family and beat virtually any car on the road in a drag race. Does 0-60 in about 4 seconds. It also handles extremely well and has tremendous grip because of its AWD system. Man, I'd like to have an Evolution.
