View Full Version : FREE Online RPGs???
A question: Does anyone know of a free multiplayer RPG that has a graphical interface?
I want to play something MMOish, with actual graphics (not that they have to be great, I just don't want to play a MUD). I beta tested (and subsequently paid-for-play on) a game called Blade Mistress, which is a pretty good little online MMO, but I got bored, because there's no spellcasting, along with other, similar limitations.
I'm not asking for "EQ but free"...but I would like something fun. Any ideas peeps?
sargentlard 12-07-03, 12:54 PM Probably not at the scale you are asking for. Maintaining these things costs serious money....it is highly unlikely someone would host one for free.
Sarge is right. If you really want an MMORPG, spend the 10 monthly bucks and get something good. Most that I've heard of die out quickly, or make you pay after a certain amount of time. Its very unlikely that a decent graphical one would last for long, even if you could find it. And I'm sure you'd wouldn't regret spending the money if you were really into MMORPGs
I might play Runescape if the training dodn't take so goddamn long.
UberDragon 12-08-03, 12:50 AM ..and i might play MMORPG's with graphics if my computer could support them!!
Mystech 12-08-03, 12:19 PM I know of an illegal free Ragnarok online server. Only problem is that you gotta' get a special version of the client which as far as I know you can only get from the guy who runs the server, or one of the people he's let in, and it's about a gig and a half in size :/
Ste_harris 12-08-03, 08:29 PM You could try this
http://www.battleon.com/
Its crap really but i've wasted a couple of hours playing it
If your looking for a pretty decent pay to play, non 3D MMORPG you could try
The Myth Of Soma (http://www.mythofsoma.net)
Its alright and i dont think its that expensive for a month or two
lixluke 12-08-03, 10:35 PM WTF????
Pristontale!!!! (http://www.sciforums.com/showthread.php?s=&threadid=31007)

OpteronGuy 12-21-04, 01:04 AM Guild Wars is free to play online. 50 to buy.
www.guildwars.com
grazzhoppa 12-21-04, 02:27 PM There's a deal going on, for Anarchy Online. Free to play for 1 year (till January 1, 2006) if you register before January 15th 2005. This thread at another forum (http://www.slickdeals.net/forums/t60842.html?) says there's no credit card needed to register, giving them your billing info is optional.
Here's the offical thing (http://www.anarchy-online.com/free/ad_campaigns/freecampaign)
The game doesn't look that bad, but doesn't look that great either...but for free, its hard to complain.
www.kingdomofloathing.com
It's mostly text with stick figures. I don't think it's what you're looking for at all; but the game's got soul man, it's got soul!
Some of these are online RPGs:

curioucity 12-22-04, 04:19 AM Free Online games are either:
-like everyone says: going to be unfree after sometime
OR
-gets majorly updated once every century
Trust me. I've been badly disappointed on my quest to find free MMORPGs, and I don't think of spending money for anything less than what I expect (though unfortunately, my expectations are too high)
kazakhan 12-22-04, 06:18 AM FreeAllegiance (http://freeallegiance.org/)
From their website "Tired of mindless shooters? Welcome to the multiplayer space combat simulation where teamwork is king!"...
Not quite a RPG but it's free.
World of Warcraft is said to be awesome. ^_^
Still not available in Europe last I heard though. :(
testify 12-22-04, 03:13 PM World of Warcraft is said to be awesome. ^_^

Oh it is! It is!
Nuttyfish 12-22-04, 04:42 PM Runescape is so crap it burns me...
Aborted_Fetus 12-22-04, 08:32 PM I won a contest on a fan site and got to play in one of the Guild Wars beta tests one weekend. The game was amazing, great graphics, fun gameplay, and it's gonna be FREE! Well, no monthly fee, anyway. Definitely check it out, looks like it's gonna be a killer game.
They say it's going to be free. It has happened other times. Keeping up the game servers/events eventually turns out to be very costly.
WAKKAWAKKA 01-18-05, 07:33 PM dude runescape is like crapped on by some fat rikishi

Truncated because so many short posts really aren't necessary, if you want people to respond quicker check out a chat room, this is a discussion forums.]
vslayer 01-18-05, 08:05 PM you have to wait for a reply, this is a forum not a chatroom, replies may take an entire day due to the various countries people here reside in
as for counterstrike, its good to know im not alone in liking it, many have said that they would not touch it with a 10 foot stick

spuriousmonkey 01-19-05, 11:31 AM I am playing Runescape now on miniclip.com.
Don't need software and it is for free. It is a bit basic though. Just like me.
Ste_harris 01-19-05, 01:39 PM I got bored of Runescape too quickly, i just cut down trees as i couldn't kill anything...
Check out MPOGD (http://www.mpogd.com) (Multiplayer Online Games Directory). There you'll find your precious free games.
GrIm ReEpPeR 01-26-05, 03:58 PM lol i dont think anyone is listenin to this forum anymore but muonline.com is a pretty good one lol u have to download it but its free
Dilbert 01-26-05, 04:12 PM well mere mortals, its your lucky day!
Knightsonline - http://www.knight-online.com.my/
Tantra - http://www.tantra-online.com/eng/
Kal - http://www.kalonline.com/
Active imagination+fantasy is superior to any MMORPG.
It's not free, but you guys should check out EVE-Online (http://www.eve-online.com). Space based MMORPG with a single shard universe (everyone who is signed up for EVE plays in the same universe). Been playing since beta myself. And all expansions are free downloads, even though hundreds of things have been added since release.
Communist Hamster 01-27-05, 02:06 AM I used to play RS then stopped. Then I played Tibia ( www.tibia.com ) and that was quite good, but became too fiddly and penalised too much for your death. Then I played Shattered Galaxies and that was cool. http://www.sgalaxy.com/
Then I fixed my BF1942 installation and I'm playing that now.
heh Shattered Galaxies is like ancient one of the first Nexon games i ever played, i have a
http://www.darkandlight.net/ account, but have not been wanting to play for ages
spuriousmonkey 01-27-05, 12:51 PM I have been actually playing runescape intensively lately.
Am now a level 53 miner with some other skills, such as 44 smithing, and 24 crafting.
I am a bit addicted.
It seems to have many players of 10 years old and so. Maybe that is why I feel at home there.
And you don't need to install software on your computer. There are actually lots of people playing at work. The sentence 'now I have to go back to work' is not an uncommon one.
Today someone pretended to be from Jagex (the makers) and asked for my password. I gave him 5 times the wrong one, and every time he checked. Meanwhile I pretended to be a 10 year old kid with dyslexia and a mother who is the only source of the real password, but she is an alcoholic and beats me. He tought it was all real. I reported his ass of course.
haha.
and I made friends with a 10 year old finnish boy, that was currently at home sick.
blackmonkeystatue 01-27-05, 10:15 PM There are EQ emulator servers. It's basically EQ, but free. Some servers are legit, others are not where they allow hacks. You can also set up your own server if you're inclined. EQ is a good game. I played it for 5.5 years. It was good because there was nothing like it at the time and it is a relaxing way to finish off a night. Think of it as interactive television, leaving the TV/radio on for background noise. Those were the days... I don't have the time anymore to try them, but I heard World of Warcraft and EQ2 are good, there may be emulator servers for those also.
Anyway, here's the EQ emulator link: http://www.eqemulator.net/main.php
PS - I haven't played EQ in a few months, but I'm sure they still have a pretty strong player base despite the releases of WoW and EQ2. $13 a month isn't bad for all of that entertainment. You can probably pick up the original EQ + 5 or so expansions and a free month of play for $30 or so. Ain't a bad price for 5+ years of content. It'll take you at least 2 years to experience all of it, 3 or 4 if you don't play much.
blackmonkeystatue 01-27-05, 10:24 PM PS - Yeah, Counter-Strike is fun. Vary fast-paced.
CS, is not fast pase for a FPS game its only has avarage speed.
Anyway this thread is about RPG's and online rpg's at that. EQ was not the first MMOG, "best" avetised in the west yes, but that does not mean it was the only one or best :).
spuries what world do you play on
spuriousmonkey 01-28-05, 04:49 AM world52..amsterdam
by the name of spuriousmonk, because spuriousmonkey didn't fit.
Stryder 01-28-05, 05:26 AM Xelios, Message "Mancer" through Eve-online sometime.
Currently I'm hanging out with a bunch of Norwegian folk that all seem friendly enough. (although if they write any Norsk, I'm lost.)
It takes a while to build up your Skill in Eve though since the higher they climb the longer they take, at least you don't have to be logged online for them to be learnt, as the ones that take 9+ days would be no fun at all.
How's the envirement in EVE-Online comming along, I played it doing early to middle beta and althou an impressive grafik engine i felt the game lacked something, it just felt empty. Is the krath emperium still around?.
Im in runescape now, same world as the monkey, not the black monkey but the other monkey, the one thats not black or a statue.
its hillarious, its some bad when compare to mode standalone clients, but then you cannot realy compare a browser client vs standalone client.
Beware monkey boy, im out the freaking tutorial and coming to stuff you full of these cool arrows i got, your going to be my pin cousin, aaaah im a level 2 woodcutter, yeaa :).
Aborted_Fetus 01-29-05, 02:57 AM Next Guild Wars beta weekend, coming up starting the Friday, Feb. 4th. Preorder the game or win a pass from a fan site to get in on the action! I'll be there!
spuriousmonkey 01-29-05, 04:14 AM I had a barbeque with Kunax in Runescape and then showed him how to make a worthless glove.
Almost more adventurous then life.
That is one cool glove, your just jealous, and im still using it. However if you are so intrested in it, i promise, i make a pair for you to.
spuriousmonkey 01-29-05, 06:31 AM Beware of my dragon shield and mighty Rune pickaxe!
(how geeky)
(I have a wizards hat btw)
Well after that BBQ, we went mining yesterday, apparently in the beginning you can only hit copper or tin rocks until you get better at mining.
This must be because thee rocks have some kind of jamming field that you can first break when you gain more skill at mining, wierd cause a rock is a rock to me. anyway we mined alot of ore, which i later processed in to bronze bar of which i made a hell of a lot schitmirs, which, as it turned out i could not sell to anyone i asked, bummer.
spuriousmonkey 01-30-05, 11:51 PM But the store will buy them for a little, and ship them to a third world country where they will melt them to plows.
Yesterday I bought a Rune scimitar for 35.000.
EVE has come a long way since beta that's for sure. The Krath Emperium folded a long time ago I believe, the major alliances in the game right now are the Stain Empire (formerly the Stain Alliance), the Fountain Alliance, FOE, the Xetic Federation, Band of Brothers (BoB) and the Curse Alliance, although Curse Alliance folded just a couple weeks ago. The only alliance from beta that still exists is Stain.
The game isn't as empty as it once was, with over 10,000 people online at a time most days. Lots of new content too like level 4 agents, tech 2, npc complexes, dozens of new npc's, player owned stations, elite frigates, battlecruisers, heavy assault cruisers and at least 3 dozen other new ships, new ores, ice fields, superhighway gates in empire (no more 40 jump trips from Amarr to Pator), mobile warp disruptors, totally overhauled UI, autopilot.... the list goes on =P
all free too ;)
It's completely different from early beta though, lots more depth and content than there used to be.
eeeh EVE-Online free? what dope are you taking?, sure the client appears to be free but then they want a wooping 20€ for the account, followed by 15€ for a month or 11€ per month for a 12 month periode :)
but the SS are sweet...
He probably ment that the upgrades are free. Many other mmorpg's charge for that additionally.
They say they have clear 12K simultaneous user connections a short while ago, but it does not say how large the total player base is, I wonder if they are breaking even when salery, maintaince and such have been paid.
I think you need about 20K useres before the moneymen startes to get wet pants and about 30K+ before they starts to ramble incoherently.
Yeah sorry, the expansions are free but the game costs money of course ;)
I think they were saying their active user base is around 30,000 accounts, but they don't like to talk about it or something.
mugicha 02-02-05, 02:59 AM ahem...uh are you guys kidding??? there is one correct reply to this post and (unless i'm wrong) i only saw it mentioned once briefly.
ANARCHY ONLINE IS FREE UNTIL JANUARY 2006
i played star wars galaxies and paid 15 bucks a month for it. AO is a way better game and its free.
oh and by the way since i got you here (in case you missed my other post):
I want a free mac mini. So do you. Lets work together and get one.
http://macminirelay.blogspot.com
Just sign up for something like sample dog biscuits and then cancel it a couple of days later. Whatever. I'm not a scammer or a spammer. I'm just a guy who wants a free computer. If you think its spam then ignore it. If you want a free mac mini then sign up.
:)
Stryder 02-06-05, 10:39 AM [OT]
I split the original thread because Spuriousmonkey and Kunax were at the climax of hijacking it for Runescape discussion, I was tempted to drop the thread's fork into the Cesspool however it's still intune with discussion of this forums so the thread now exists as "Runscapers".
This should allow the discussion of "Free RPG's" to continue unaffected of their experience online.
At no point did me or spuriois even try to hijack this thread, thats is a complet and baseless lie. We had successfull derailed and take over the entire thread.
Ok, i behave now.... bougth a adamantium dagger, it's just so good for poking dwarfs.
Mike_K_M 02-16-05, 09:00 PM Runescape rules man!!!
Mike_K_M 02-16-05, 09:02 PM Runescape doesn't suck, it rules!
My username is the same on runescape as it is on this.
Feel free to contact me!
spuriousmonkey 02-17-05, 01:38 AM Life is continuing pretty much as described earlier on runescape. I have been ambushed a lot by groups of PKers in the wildie. I then do a wild dash towards safety. I helps now that I am capable of the teleport spell. When you reach level 20 in the wildie i can teleport to Varrock.
It has gotten rather boring to level up on the higher levels now. You have to mine, smith, fight an awful lot to still reach a higher level. So things are losing their appeal a bit.
Communist Hamster 02-17-05, 06:17 AM Did I mention shattered galaxy? Thats quite good, although if you haven't got broadband you probably won't be able to download it. It's a MMORTS.
i be willing to sell all the stuff i have in the bank for only 2 shrimps and a trout... and a few logs of wood for a fire
spuriousmonkey 02-17-05, 08:40 AM Would you accept an apple and a lemon?
2 lemons and a apple whole be more fair i think
spuriousmonkey 02-18-05, 03:15 AM I think they could improve the economical system of MMORPGs a lot. Basically it is entirely artificial. Money is being printed whenever it is needed and goods disappear regularly to prevent huge mountains of stuff, and other goods are replenished to prevent depletion.
Somehow I think they could make things a lot more interesting. Basically there is a lack of sense. I made 20 steel full body plates the other day. I can't sell them on the free market because there are not enough low level people. You then sell them to the store where they disappear into a black hole. Pointless...
spuriousmonkey 02-18-05, 03:31 AM Online gaming is apparently really dangerous.
http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/technology/4273125.stm
planet e... something has a real economy, you can buy and sell game items back and forth between real money and the ingame currancy.
some time ago some dude bourgth a island ingame for 120K dollars
