I tend to do fairly well in school, but I can really screw up on tests or exams, even if I study. Do any of you have any hints, studying techniques, or pointers for taking massive exams? I've got a killer tomorrow, I've studied a little, and I intend to study more. Last time I had an exam this big I studied for probably four hours over the course of a weekend, and I wound up with a 74. What should I do?

btw, the material is genetics. Punnet Squares, Mendel's Laws, not as much material as the last quiz, but still, if you have any pointers to do with those sections, they would help out a lot. My Bio teacher is okay, but he thinks that since we're in an honors class that it's good for us to get tests that are close to impossible to ace or even do well on. I dunno....

    Any help is much appreciated

Study lots, and get enough sleep. Those are the two most important things. Usually works for me. I honestly can't understand the people who get a couple hours of sleep during exam week and still manage to do well. I need my sleep! I've heard that having at least something to eat beforehand helps too.

    Joeman's law:

Complete mastery of the course material will get you at least a B

To get an A you need practice. You need to go over your homeworks and practice problems.

that's funny. I'm the opposite way around. I always do great on tests and stuff, but if you hand me a sheet of homework, i'm a lazy bastard for the rest of the night and it doesn't get done.

P.S. that was an easy-ass quiz

The quiz was easy, but I get the feeling that no matter what I do I'm going to fail miserably.

Punnet squares are pretty straightforward. Take for example Mendel's 2nd Law of Segregation

    Hybrids with Hybrids

    T t
    T TT Tt

    t Tt tt

    With a ratio of 3:1

He said that a lot of the test would be like this...then the next day he said that he made the test harder than every other one. I'm so screwed....I hardly even know what to study

oh, goodness....those sad little faces wrench my heart out. don't stress this ...you'll do fine. i guarantee it. your teacher is just using/resorting to a common ploy used by most teachers...he didn't make it any harder, he's just messing with you guys' heads. rise up above the level of your teacher, be the MASTER STUDENT!! show him who's really boss!!

more than likely he will have 2 or 3 punnet sq problems, but, it seems like you have the hang of it ..from what i see. btw ..is this a comprehensive exam that is to cover both semesters?

Nah, this one covers about an eighth of the entire year, we spend half of it with him. The man is an impossible grader...I would rise up, but for me at least it is just impossible. He's managed to almost completely make me lose my interest in science. English and Social Studies, on the other hand, I can excel in, and before I thought I could do well in science (A in last year's class). I don't even know if I'm going to be able to get into the next upper-placement class, you need a B, right now I have a C, and this exam is probably going to knock it down to a D again. All I know is that there's no way, at the moment, that I can get it up to a B, and I only have until the end of january. He doesn't assign enough graded work...

aw....if you were here, i would tutor you...and, i would guarantee you an A-...or, at the very least...a B. are you guys going to be rehashing the cell..like meiosis and meitosis and stuff? just curious.

He said we'd be doing some Meiosis, and I think I've got it covered. Mitosis was on the last exam.

    Prophase
    Metaphase
    Anaphase
    Telophase
    Metaphase
    Anaphase
    Telophase

    PMATMAT
    I + II

The difference is that chromosomes are divided, they're haploids instead of diploids, carry half the genetic information. In this process from one sex cell four are created.

And in three minutes I'm outta here.

    chill out man!

Schwartz, no worries man. You're like the smartest one out of all of us! I don't know who you have for a bio teacher, but i had miss shanholtzer and the exam was mega easy. It was no sweat.

    You'll do great!

    :thumbs up:

People learn differently. Some remembers easier if they picture what they are reading in their mind, others by hearing it from a teacher or repeating for themselves, and some by experiencing it by for example experimenting. I'm like most people, I try to visualize it. Also try association, and teaching others about what you're reading.

    Keep it up!

I start by reviewing my notes.

Then I take the textbook, and make new notes.

    I review those notes.

I do the questions and homework all over again, without looking at the notes.

I review the notes and the homework answers.

By then, I'm pretty confident. But see, that's the problem. While everyone's sweating and worrying, I'm completely at ease. Many a time people have muttered things under their breath because of my seemingly God-given confidence and relaxed state. Then, when I screw up, it won't seem like such a big let down, see? You tell yourself it's only a test, go do it, and forget about it. I hate when people worry after a test. I mean, geez, it's over, it's not as if worrying will make the mark go any higher.

Stay calm and cool. Laugh off your mistakes. Make sure you actually understand the material, rather than memorize it by rote. I know, because I just did a Biology quiz on Mendel and Punnett squares and incomplete + codominance. Everything makes so much more sense if you listen in class, and comprehend the information. I find that explaining the subject matter to other people makes it easier to memorize, because you have absorbed the material, digested it, and can spew it back out in an understandable format.
