I'm not sure of the spelling, but that's not the point of this thread.
Okay, I saw this movie last night with my g/f, best friends and others and I was just blown away by this film. The best I can put it is that's it's simply a "guy" film, but not. It defies many conventions layed out by previous "guy" films.
Screw Lord of the Rings, this film is a must see.
Okay, I'll layout the basic plotline. Sometime in the near future World War 3 breaks out killing millions upon millions. The survivors decided that they couldn't last another World War so they tried to come up with a way to stop this. They decided to go to the very root of war, and kill it. Emotions. In the newly formed nation of Libria, a new drug is developed to supress emotions and is given to the general populace. It works, there is no crime nor war in Libria. It only exists in "The Nether", the war ruins of the former world populated by bands of 'Sense Offenders', people who have feelings. I'm gonna stop here, I don't want to give too much away.
Okay, there was so many great things about this movie.
First off, for a bunch of nobody actors, they did an amazing job. I was surprised at how good it was acted, altho some actors were pretty poor.
Secondly, when the Cleric (an agent whose job it is to apprehend or eliminate Sense Offenders) stops taking his does he experiences feelings. And when he does he starts to physically feel objects around him. I found this very clever, I knew as soon as he started feeling it was just screaming 'Hello, this guy has emotions now!'. Very clever stuff indeed.
What actualy made my jaw hit the floor was the so cleverly merged style of Martial Arts and modern firearms. The choerography was just amazing. The way the blended old and new, I never even fathomed it, not even in my wildest of dreams.
Also, unlike many other "guy" films, he doesn't get the girl. In fact he loses two...and they're both burnt alive. I was in secret jubilation.
Anotehr thing that sets this film away from the conventions of this genre was the final fight scene. The one between the Cleric and the coloured man (sorry! Can't remember either name). You think that because they fought before and were equally matched that it was going to be a short winded affair...nope, over in 3 seconds with the guys face beiing sliced, YES SLICED, off.
Upom exitiing the theatre I couldn't contain my overall excitement for the film. I was on an adrenaline high, something that only a few films have ever done to me.
I could really sum up this whole 'essay' in five words.
YOU MUST SEE THIS FILM!
If anyone has seen this film yet, tell me what you thought. I am so definatly getting it one DVD upon release. Hell, I'm seeing it again!
At last, a guy film without a soppy ending, yay for Earth!
