Double play! Do you know of any companies that are focusing on "alternative" energy in their offer of goods or services?



Xcel Energy is a utility company based in Minneapolis, Minnesota. The unfortunate policy of charging consumers more to use energy generated by renewable energy, such as their Windsource policy, is contradictory to the political chant "go green", although it is justified in capitalism. Xcel Energy operates four waste-to-energy facilities in Minnesota and Wisconsin. Two burn refuse-derived fuel (RDF) — material produced from processing municipal waste — to produce electricity. Another burns a combination of wood waste and RDF. The fourth burns wood waste and discarded tires, along with coal and natural gas.

Xcel Energy has contracted for the development of 110 megawatts of electricity generated by biomass-fueled technologies. Waste wood, fast-growth poplar trees, and poultry litter will all be used as fuel to generate electricity, without depleting the earth's finite resources.

Xcel Energy... [has] 1,323 megawatts of wind energy capacity in service. [Their] goal is add up to 4,000-megawatts of additional wind capacity by 2020, with 2800 megawatts in service by the end of 2007.

The power of falling water now accounts for more than four percent of Xcel Energy's electricity generation. Xcel Energy operates 27 hydroelectric power plants in Wisconsin, Minnesota and Colorado, which can generate more than 500 megawatts. And we purchase large amounts of emissions-free, reasonably priced hydro-generated electricity from Manitoba Hydro.

Solar energy is a growing part of our renewable portfolio. We will purchase the power from an 8.2-megawatt central solar power plant located near Alamosa, Colorado and continue to explore new solar energy opportunities. We also offer rebates to Colorado customers for installing solar systems on their homes and businesses as part of our Solar*Rewards program.

We are partnering with the U.S. Department of Energy's National Renewable Energy Laboratory (NREL) on a unique project that uses electricity from wind turbines to produce and store pure hydrogen, offering what may become an important new template for future energy production. The project aims to overcome the intermittent aspect of wind energy by enabling energy storage for later use when the wind isn't blowing or the demand for electricity is high.
