Another instance of US endemic blindness to irony.

Well, at LEAST there are CHARGES.

I think it is rather amusing to hear the US berating Iran for prosecuting a US journalist on spy charges, when after 6 years, there are still hundreds of foreign nationals imprisoned in Gitmo without the luxury of "prosecution". They languish under "detention without trail". Barbaric.

    Any comment on this view?

Note: I feel sorry for the journalist in question, and I hope she is found innocent and released without further delay.

Maybe they are upset because the journalist hasn't been led around naked on a leash or waterboarded 180 times?

    Eww! How archaic and backward!!!!

Sam, you're being disingenuous again. You have lost your sense of honor. You've become just one more in the endless series of pissed-off Muslims that we have to share this tiny planet with. With of course the significant difference that you've chosen to live here among us and enjoy a level of economic and social freedom that women can only dream of in most Islamist states, while taking advantage of that freedom by criticizing the very country that provides it.

You can't be serious about equating a grandstanding, trumped-up charge of espionage to a charge of taking up arms against the United States after (for most of the detainees) actually being caught in the act.

And your disingenuousness knows no limits. Less than a year ago you told us all that in your value system, the single most important issue in the Bush Dynasty's War on Islam was Guantánamo. You accepted my interpretation of your position that the thousands of people who had been killed directly by U.S. action, the thousands more killed indirectly by the war's second order effects, the millions whose lives were ruined, the destruction of the only secular pro-Western state in the Middle East, the destabilization of the entire region, the reinforcement of anti-American sentiment in even moderate Muslim nations, and all of this as a subterfuge to keep people from finding out that it was Bush's friends the Saudis who were responsible for 9/11--that none of these things singly or in aggregate were as important as the fewer than one thousand people languishing in Guantánamo. You said that America was (to paraphrase without digging up your post) beneath contempt because not a single one of our Presidential candidates had promised to shut down the Guantánamo prison. When I replied that winding down the war was a tiny bit more important and once that happened Guantánamo would be simply one domino that would fall into place and that this would happen under an Obama administration, you insisted that he would not close the prison.

Here we are watching Obama fulfill his campaign promises (mitigated as all campaign promises are when the campaign becomes reality, and we all understand that). The Guantánamo prison is indeed on a timetable for closing, and Obama is frantically trying to find a country that will take the Uighurs because if he sends them home to China they will be executed, something that is very unlikely to happen if they remain in U.S. jurisdiction. The one place we can't turn any of the Guantánamo prisoners loose is the USA, because (unlike our reporter who loves Iran) virtually every one of them has sworn to continue his campaign of violence against the "Great Satan."

We're still waiting for you to admit you were wrong. Instead we get more of your steady stream of sophomoric and disingenuous bullshit.

Knock it off. You're rapidly becoming a troll and in case you haven't noticed we've started cracking down on trolling.

Are you addressing Straw Dog or me?

As far as I remember, I did not say that Obama would not close down Gitmo. I'm not into mind reading. What I did say was that if you had a family member who was being raped and tortured in Gitmo, would you be content to wait till the war was officially wound down? I was quite shocked by your suggestion that continuing torture was irrelevant because it was more important to wait till the war was over and meanwhile we should twiddle our thumbs and wait for the process to run its course.

Also, by and by, most of the people in Gitmo were not "caught in the act". They were simply handed over for money. And most of them cannot be released because the torture has damaged them as human beings. Still only 6 of the hundreds detained were considered for any processing and I'm not certain that even one can be tried due to the torture. Note that NOT ONE of the detainees was charged or tried, merely tortured.

And yeah, to insist that Iran follow laws which the US has and still is pretending do not exist, is quite ridiculous. Fortunately, its also unnecessary.

I understand Obama has promised that there will be no trial for any of the torture done.

    Psst.
    1. SAM did not post this.
    2. Veiled threats about "a war against trolling" sounds a lot like "a war against terror".
    3. Cracking down on FREE speech is a FASCIST trait.
    4. Most importantly -
, and you KNOW this is trumped up, because you KNOW full well, that the US does not employ spies in Iran?

Yes she did. I guess I'll have to dig for it. Yucch.
This is a place of science, not a social club or a park. We enforce the scientific method. All forms of trolling are against the rules. We really are cracking down on it.

There certainly is a social aspect at play on this forum, which, I think adds to the unique flavor present. To be fair, when David started this site he had Science in mind, but he undoubtedly promoted "FUN".

Just a thought. Don`t mess with a winning formula.

Besides, there's also the fact that it is your place - therefore your rules; everyone here is a guest and by discussing here they accept the rules, etc.

On topic and interesting if unsettling reading (not that there are any surprises) for those that still find value in truth and compassion in the human heart.

From Harold Pinter`s 2005 Nobel Prize for Literature Acceptance Speech.

    Excerpts:

Moving on to 2009, one wonders if Obama is signaling real change, or are we just going to see another incarnation of US meddling and double speak in World affairs?

You took Straw's opening post and then ranted against SAM. Why don't you chill out a little instead of coming at her like a rabid dog? If this place is a science forum and not a social club why is it that the longest thread in history here is Star wars vs Star Treck? What 'scientific method' should we employ when posting in 'world events' & 'politics'? Your idea of strict scientific methods in regards to this site is a pipedream less you shut down shop and start all over, in which case most of the mods wouldn't qualify as science experts and you would lose a majority of present members.

Also SAM is from India, not an 'islamist' state.

Fraggle is personifying US hypocrisy: A festering cultural prejudice has caused an acute blind spot, which results in injurious stumbles. It's painful to watch it happen in people and nations that we admire.

Saberi is but a pawn in this geopolitical ploy of nations. She was arrested only because they knew she would make news being that she was a reporter. That insured a worldwide MEDIA extravaganza and to keep Iran in the news. This whole thing smells as a set up and the end game is that she will be released to show how just Iran has become. What a load of crap I'd think.

Of course. And there were, and are, no US spies in Indonesia, Greece, Uruguay, Brazil, Paraguay, Haiti, Turkey, the Philippines, Guatemala, El Salvador, Chile, Russia, etc.

This woman is probably not a true Muslim. She is most likely working to harm good Iranian Muslims by printing Lies against the Muslim Nation. I think if you look deeper you will find she has many Jewish friends in Hollywood, LA, where she is from. It's very hard to find a pretty woman like this to sneak into Iran pretending to really care about Muslims. She was trying to incite violence against Iran.

Americans have been led astray because most have not heard the True calling of Allah through His messenger Mohammad in his Final Revelation the Koran. We Muslims should pity the American's for only the Peaceful revelation in the Koran can bring them back from Satan and to the Peace of Islam with Allah.
