View Full Version : Endangered Species Fur Sales
Mickmeister 12-10-07, 02:20 PM I am in the process of selling all of my mom's furs because my wife doesn't like fur to take them for herself, but I have run into a problem selling one of them. Her ocelot fur is an endangered species. I have taken it to two different furriers and they said that unless I have a receipt for when it was purchased, proving it was before the species became endangered, I could not sell it to them. The receipt is long gone. I asked the furriers if I could make a private sale and they were unable to answer that. Does anyone here know the answer?
Orleander 12-10-07, 05:19 PM Donate it to Goodwill and write off the value on your taxes???
cosmictraveler 12-10-07, 05:23 PM If you sell it yourself you shouldn't have a problem. Just advertise it
somewhere like Ebay or your local newspaper. Check with the authorities
where you live first just to make sure though.
Keep the ocelot fur for your own personal use. The wife needn't fool with it if she doesn't want to.

I don't think so with that. I already have a mink jacket for myself and my dog.
Orleander 12-11-07, 07:08 AM OK, that's a lie til I see a picture!! :)
Mickmeister 12-11-07, 09:17 AM Here is my dog's mink fur jacket. I don't have a pic of mine, but it is in my truck. I'll take a pic of it in a few and post it too.

where's the dog??
Why does a dog need a fur coat? Don't they already have one? My husband bought a fur coat (mink) from his uncle years ago. He never wore it. He just bought it because it was part of the 82 olympics costume or some damn thing and his stupid uncle needed the money. Anyway we took it to a furrier and asked them to sell it for us. First they charged us $135. to clean it then $55. a year to store it. After 3 years of it not selling we said f*ck it and told them to keep the damn thing. They were only going to give us 65% of what they sold it for anyway.

I'm sure it looked much better on the mink.
Why don't you take your fur coats and give them to a homeless charity?
iceaura 12-11-07, 11:19 AM The age of the coat can be professionally determined, probably. That would give you a document you can use to sell the thing legally.

A homeless person would destroy them. They wouldn't have any clue on taking care of them. They are much too valuable for that. Plus, the one is less than 2 years old.
Why did you buy them in the first place.. ?

Hey Mickmeister, I need some dog fur for my cat to wear this winter. Could you skin that dog of yours for me ?
Mickmeister 12-11-07, 02:25 PM Dog fur is not too warm. I would suggest mink or beaver. They have much thicker coats.

I don't care, I like how your doggies fur looks.
Mickmeister 12-11-07, 02:27 PM It would take a few of him. I calculated that his pelt wouldn't even make a glove.

Seriously though, why did you buy that stuff ? You obviously like animals.. or only dogs ?

He looks like a real SNOB lol
Mickmeister 12-11-07, 02:36 PM I like animals, but how is it any worse than watching the animal channel and seeing one animal rip another animal into shreds as it suffers, like when lions attack a zebra and rip it's flesh until it falls? I see no difference. We're animals too.

eh? Never mind..

What Enmos means is. There is no reason for you dog to have a mink coat.
It is crazy!!! If you wanted a coat for him why not a fake fur one?????
I think he looks like he should be attatched to Paris Hilton!

That, and his example isn't remotely the same thing as buying fur.
Orleander 12-11-07, 03:57 PM Minks are raised to be skinned. They don't skin them while they are alive and then throw them away. Minks are well taken care of. If they weren't their fur wouldn't be in good condition.
Cows are raised for meat and leather but people get bent about fur.
I think your dog looks cute. I take it you live in a cold climate?
shorty_37 12-11-07, 03:59 PM My dog would rip that mink coat to shreads, with that dog in it or not LOL

I know because when my mom died she had a couple of real fur coats too. My Dad asked if I wanted them, and I said no...not my kinda thing. I think the days of REAL fur is out!! Anyway I took this boa (kinda scarf) that belonged to one of the coats. My dog found it and ripped it too shreads.
I walked in the door one day and there was white fur everywhere
I guess he figured it was an easy fight! LOL
Anyway my Dad sent the coats to Europe, along with most of my moms clothes and things. Everything is very expensive over there and they divide it amongst themselves whoever likes what, it is theirs. Whatever they don't want they give to the homeless shelters there.

Huh? Europe comes off as poor.. to Americans (Ok, Canadian Americans ;)) ? lol

I didn't mean that.....Some of my relatives in Poland (Dad's side) are a bit on the poor side. They say clothes are very expensive there too. So every yr he sends them a few boxes of clothes and stuff.
Oh on my mom's side Germany.....Money is no object lol SNOBS

Ah.. ok. The Eu will put an end to that I suppose.

But we need to eat meat as part of a stable diet - but we no longer need fur as we have clothing - we have elvolved - there should be no reason to kill animals for their fur.
And alot of animals are skinned while they are alive as the fur is in better condition - I know for a fact that dogs get skinned alive.
shorty_37 12-12-07, 08:51 AM I know for a fact that dogs get skinned alive.
That is just horrible. Whoever does that should be skinned alive themselves and see how it feels.

Orly, you're more intelligent than this post suggests. I'd argue that mink locked up all their lives and then killed are not well taken care of, regardless of being fed.
I also get bent over cows being raised for meat and leather, but that's for another thread.

Maybe, but I don't see how they would make much money off it. Stressed animals lose hair. And mink are not pack animals, they can't be crowded. But I suppose if they can breed them fast enough (like a puppy mill) maybe they offset loses that way.
And you're gonna have to prove to me that its standard practice to skin any mammal alive.

I'm not interested in the commercial viabiltiy of breeding animals for their fur, just the ethical concerns, of which there are many.
I didn't say anything about skinning mammals alive, but since you mention it I can tell you it does happen....

Orleander 12-13-07, 12:45 PM Yes, but not everyone who raises/breeds dogs is running a puppy mill. Just like not every place that raises animals for fur is skinning them alive.

Ok, that's alright then.
Orleander 12-13-07, 12:50 PM I'm not judging an entire industry on some unscrupulous unethical immoral men.
GingerSnap 12-13-07, 12:51 PM I think the dog looks cute in the jacket. I can't beleive how some people treat their pets so lavishly though. If a small pet needs a jacket, I prefer it be made out of something fake.

"unscrupulous unethical immoral" that is the entire industry.
