    Hey all
Why is it that so many people (particularly adults) have a problem with eminem? so far I've only ever gotten old fashioned reasons for disliking him and his music. He is portrayed as some kind of villain in the media.
many parents I know have BANNED their kids from listening to him, but why? what harm does it do to listen to his music? I've listened to most eminem songs and can't think of any real reasons that they should be banned
Please tell me your thoughts on this

Well eminem's lyrics can be very very explict and some people (usually younger) can be very impressionable. You don't want kids acting out things said in eminem songs because their too young to seperate reality from fantasy

Fair enough, but I'm talking mainly about teenagers who aren't allowed to listen to eminem.
talking about having an impression being made on someone what impression do you think the weak excuse for a president Bush is having on all the younger kids? This is the 2nd war in as many years Bush has started, and I think he would have a bit more of an influence than Eminem.

do you mean by this that there's lots of swearing in them? People hear swearing everyday all over the place, who cares if they're in his songs? I think swearing should be uncensored, and that way they won't be a big deal anymore. (they're just words after all) if you're talking about his lyrics talking about him killing someone I think you're a little too influenced by the media if you think that little kids will think it's right to kill people or will in fact kill someone themselves.
eg. the media blamed the columbine shootings on manson, I mean how pathetic, the media TRIES to scare people, what do you think all this crap about a colour coded terrorist warning system is about. It appears to be on high half the time anyway.
sry if this post didn't make much sense I'm writing in a rush I'm supposed to be on my way to a movie now

Ok, the president would have little influecnce on kids because they wouldn't idolize a sixty something year old man.

I"m not talking about swearing but i'm sure there are parents who don't want their teens to hear excesive swearing. esp. the younger they are. No one can stop the kids from hearing curse words but you can't blame parents for trying to minize what they do hear.

Teens and kids are influenced by music. A lot more than you think. It slowly makes them less sensitive to things like violence, cursing.

you don't have to idolize someone to be influenced by them. and what Bush does affects the world, so even if he doesn't influence them directly they still get used to wars, which will make them used to people getting killed and dying.

    desensitivity

When a person becomes desensitized to violence they are able be more violent.

Think about it. If you were a soldier and you were in a situation were you were forced to kill somebody would it bother you? A lot? a little? It depends on how sensitive you are to the act of killing someone reguardless of the reason. If you've heard about a soldier killing someone in the same situation in your fav song a million times, then it probably wouldn't bother you as much as it would to someone that never heard the song.

This is how violent music can desensitize a person to the point were they may do something that they wouldn't have.

I never said bush was an ideal role model...he isn't. But he's probably a better role model than eminem.

violence in the news is for the purpose of informing people.

What purpose does the violence in eminem's song serve?

well, speaking of eminem being a role model I think he is a better role model than bush. Bush comes from a rich family, he's been an alchoholic many times in his life the elections WERE rigged, read "stupid white men" by micheal moore to see what I'm talking about and bush is an idiot, he's unintelligent, if we ever rely on air instead of oil we should drill into bush's head that's the sort of person he is.
On the other hand eminem brought himself from nothing to everything, he is more of a role model than bush will ever be.
Deos it really matter how or why the violence is put out there? even if it is on the news it's still contributing to the decensitising of violence. Maybe parents should ban their kids from watching the news if they ban them from eminem.

it's not just adults who have a problem with eminem. i'm 15 and i hate his guts. he can't rap for crap.... and he raps about pathetic issues. i prefer someone like tupac who rapped about serious and interesting issues. anyway... i've sort of outgrown rap.... listening to more of psychedelia and old rock.

    Because he's a Manson-wannabe.

Other than that, his music is okay. Some of the shit he pulls is great - dedicating a song about rape to your mom is so totally fucked up!

    Manson wannabe? Thats hilarious.
No xev, that kid with the white make up and black clothes that everyone kicks the shit out of is a manson wannabe. He's doing a good job too...

This thread is stupid by the way.
No one is against eminem, he just says they are in his songs. He's good at saying he's contraversial, he's not good at being contraversial.

    But still, manson? LOL
Thats a harsh insult, what did eminem ever do to you xev? Oh yeah... I forgot you were a feminist...

Dude - let me make this perfectly clear, so clear that even a cretin like yourself can understand:

    I - LIKE - EMINEM.

His music is okay. He's funny. My only "problem" is that he's trying to be shocking. He's attempting to do what should come naturally.

Lou, I know plenty of parents who are against eminem and while he isn't as contraversial as he makes himself out to be, he has been involved in a lot of court cases and I have seen him on the news quite a few times.
Yeah I agree he is a bit of a manson wannabe.
Xev goes beyond being simply feminist, she's fucking SEXIST.
