in here? youtube videos used to be allowed to be embedded here but than moderators descended upon us humble people and took away that right to do so.
Yes it's possible, but previous requests have been denied. The way I see other bulletin boards doing it nowadays is they invent a "youtube" tag like this ...where "9V4IJdh6i9U" is the link for the video on youtube (appears after the "v=" line in the query string of any youtube hyperlink).
I've seen the code before. I remember seeing people do it on here a while back. Never knew how to do it. I've had a few times when it seemed that it would be very useful for a post to be able to just click the video in the thread itself without having to send someone to an external link altogether to watch something. Kind of like quoting choice excerpts from a linked article without expecting or requiring someone to read the entire page in the link. Apparently that was disabled? Why? Earlier I asked the one moderator (I think he's a moderator Please Register or Log in to view the hidden image! ) who was online at the time I wanted to embed a video, but received no response. I can't quite see how videos embedded in a post would be a major trouble. Any mods or admins want to comment? p.s. Is there a list of mods/admins anywhere? I know some of them, but am unsure exactly how many and who they are. I wasn't sure how to find out.
Not a huge deal. I just remember seeing one or two on SciForums, and wasn't sure if it was available and just didn't know it, or if it was there and was changed.
Wouldn't there be a bandwidth problem ? I mean, some people here will be posting embedded video's 24/7.
What ? Oh duh.. ok lol Please Register or Log in to view the hidden image! But then why did they remove the possibility ?
If I remember correctly, the way people posted youtube vids here was through HTML object embedding. The board was set up to accept full blown HTML object tags.......so anyone could post any content from anywhere. You could also embed windows media player objects and any other hackable browser gizmo you wanted in posts. I think the big difference with the method is that its more secure. It only accepts content from the youtube domain, and makes it so users can't set their own parameters for the video (like the size of the control, autoplay, etc). Otherwise, 10 users could post video with autoplay=true, and whenever you clicked on the thread, you'd immediately get bombarded with 10 videos playing at the same time.
Most forums allow it? this is one of the first that does not.... Although I cannot even post a youtube link yet because I am a new member Please Register or Log in to view the hidden image!
Probably it would. BTW, I think I saw that you had video embedded in one of your posts. Would you mind to share the secret how you did that? Please Register or Log in to view the hidden image! Was it just <> correction to [], or something else?
Oh no, that was just a screen shot of a video with a hyperlink on it Please Register or Log in to view the hidden image!
Actually as standard the software has no Youtube tag. It is possible to add one without any hacks, however it doesn't filter for the Youtube domain, it just pre-passes the youtube domain prior to the id number that identifies the video in question. A hacked version could possibly strip extra string content that would otherwise be assumed. (potential exploit) And there is always the concern for Activescripting content that could otherwise undermine the forum (I'm not sure how Youtube strips rogue activescripting from Flashfiles) When Sciforums use to allow such content it was back in its infancy when it had unrestricted HTML capabilities (Which got abused by various hackers/bots and eventually caused restrictions). I think the consensus of the period was that to allow too much media would cause a crowded/noisy forum with lots of flashy gizmos/gadgets and fads. (Notibly some people have trouble just using the forums vanilla features.)
Dear Stryder, Please refrain from speaking such Greek; you're hurting us dumb Americans...Please Register or Log in to view the hidden image! Malicious activescript commands snuck into otherwise harmless code? In what manner would someone do that and how could embedded Youtube videos cause such a breech in security? I would like you to kindly, if would please, lay out step by step the processes and scripting language necessary to f*** up the forums using Youtube. And then implement the capabilities to allow us to do this. Please Register or Log in to view the hidden image! Is this an anti-endorsement of the idea? Could we not have just the command, since the majority of video clips used would probably be from that site? That would eliminate the need for html and whatnot and the potential disasters.
Okay. Admittedly Activescripting has slowly had it's exploits curtailed through Adobe's (that Acquisitioner of Macromedia) change to the Flash Viewer for greater security. However Activescript can be used to load rogue pages, even construct viruses (At least in older Internet Explorer builds). I'm not going to show a how to on how to build them of course, since like I mentioned these are mostly old methods of exploitation which I think for the most part are patched. I'm not endorsing or anti-endorsement, although you could suggest that if you were looking from an SEO perspective of this forum. The inclusion of tonnes of external links all destined to the same site can actually impact the search engine rating of the site. It would be fine of course if for every Youtube link out, there was a link pointing back to Sciforums. (From a SEO perspective.) (Btw this commentary is a personal view on the subject, not speaking as an authority for this website)
So, is there any kind of verdict on embedded video yet? Debate even? In much the same way being able to display the actual picture instead of just a link sometimes enhances and aids a post, so would being able to post a video. If there is concern about bandwidth or loading time on pages, there could be a limit to one embedded video per post. And perhaps someone posting a ton of videos on the same page could be prevented by moderators? I know moderators are looking for more reasons to edit posts! Please Register or Log in to view the hidden image!
I don't know if those actually ARE concerns, but it might help to keep posts uncluttered. Embed the most important video for a post, and subsequent ones can merely be linked. That'd probably be MY style, anyway.
i remember embedding sound files, hidden and on autoplay, load the thread and it plays poor jerreck the wavs were very insulting
