Ellen MacArthur is already setting her sights on her next sailing challenge, just hours after completing her record-breaking round-the-world trip. The Briton became the fastest person to sail solo non-stop around the world when she finished on Monday in 71 days, 14 hours, 18 minutes and 33 seconds. She travelled round the world on a boat by herself to break a record. I was just wondering; who cares?
Is there any value in record breaking besides saying to your mates that you broke a record?

this is not to say I have any interest in sailing, but you may as well have made that statement about anything, the olympics for instant, whats the point in a gold medal, or whats the point of any team winning the super bowl, or the football league.
whats the point of climbing a mountain, whats the point of bungie jumping, or sking.
whats the point of scuba diving, whats the point of going to college/uni, what the hells the point at all. TO ACHIEVE, TO BETTER YOUSELF, TO HOLD YOU HEAD UP, FOR SELF RESPECT, you dont do it for others, you do it for yourself.

Surely that this record was nothing more than a farce, she didnt do it herself, she had a team of people working behind the scenes plotting, forcasting, analysing, making sure she was safe. The whole point was the sail round the world single handed. She didnt even fund the venture herself, B&Q did.

As for the solo thing, you might as well say that da Vinci didn't paint the Mona Lisa by himself, there were the people who made his brushes, supplied his paints, the canvas...
