I just heard about Earth Hour. At 8:30PM local time, Saturday 28 March 2009 we're all supposed to show our support for global warming policies by turning off our lights.
    VOTE EARTH
YOUR LIGHT SWITCH IS YOUR VOTE

This year, Earth Hour has been transformed into the world’s first global election, between Earth and global warming.

For the first time in history, people of all ages, nationalities, race and background have the opportunity to use their light switch as their vote – Switching off your lights is a vote for Earth, or leaving them on is a vote for global warming. WWF are urging the world to VOTE EARTH and reach the target of 1 billion votes, which will be presented to world leaders at the Global Climate Change Conference in Copenhagen 2009.

This meeting will determine official government policies to take action against global warming, which will replace the Kyoto Protocol. It is the chance for the people of the world to make their voice heard.

Earth Hour began in Sydney in 2007, when 2.2 million homes and businesses switched off their lights for one hour. In 2008 the message had grown into a global sustainability movement, with 50 million people switching off their lights. Global landmarks such as the Golden Gate Bridge in San Francisco, Rome’s Colosseum, the Sydney Opera House and the Coca Cola billboard in Times Square all stood in darkness.

In 2009, Earth Hour is being taken to the next level, with the goal of 1 billion people switching off their lights as part of a global vote. Unlike any election in history, it is not about what country you’re from, but instead, what planet you’re from. VOTE EARTH is a global call to action for every individual, every business, and every community. A call to stand up and take control over the future of our planet. Over 74 countries and territories have pledged their support to VOTE EARTH during Earth Hour 2009, and this number is growing everyday.

We all have a vote, and every single vote counts. Together we can take control of the future of our planet, for future generations.

VOTE EARTH by simply switching off your lights for one hour, and join the world for Earth Hour. http://www.earthhour.org/about/

I plan to have every light in the house blazing brightly. Maybe I'll even start a bonfire in the back yard, roast some marshmallows and hotdogs. How about you?

Interestingly, I also came across this info from the 2009 International Conference on Climate Change in New York. Here is a graph of CO2 v/s temperature:

And here's one showing temperature v/s solar activity:

It's because I believe that, whether anthropogenic global warming is real or not (see graphs above for evidence of the latter), policies to address it (such as cap and trade) will do far more harm than good.

Environmentalism is the intellectuals' version of religion. I read about 12,000 students protesting global warming.

    Great.
A prayer meet to change the weather.

Then don't turn off your lights.
Why do you have to be provocative by purposely turning on all your lights ? Sounds really childish to me..

I want to make up for anyone who does turn off their lights. I assume they'll be using satellite pictures as evidence of support for global warming policies. So, by increasing my normal light output, I get to vote twice.

Wouldn't it be funny if, during earth hour, the light output actually increased?
Agreed. The human mind has some sort of natural tendency to believe in something. Take away Christianity (or Islam, or Judaism, or whatever), and we have people essentially worshiping trees.

Interesting. If we all do that, will global warming instantly begin to subside and we can all go back to living with the lights on?

If everyone on Earth supports the policies, do they automatically get passed by all the nations' governments?

What would it prove ? And don't you mean 'want' instead of 'need' there ?

Why the fuck are you going to crank up your lights?

You think climate change is just a joke?

Oh wait, this is from the guy who goes on about how men want sex and women need love...forgive me if I'm just going to accept that you're talking crap and ignore you.

No, the joke is that humans can do anything now, at this late date, to fix it all by ......turning out a few lights! ...LOL!

Global climate might be changing, but it's the height of human arrogance to think that we can actually do anything to change that course.

Jeez, Enmos, "Badges?... We don't need no... stinkin' badges!" is one of the most frequently quoted, misquoted, and parodied movie quotations in history! Here are a few examples (including the original)

Turning off lights is only a vote. It's not meant to actually fix the environment in itself. If there are enough votes it might give them some leverage to put new laws in place.

I tend to agree with that.. sadly. But can we know for sure ?
