View Full Version : Duty Free Cigarettes
Captain_Crunch 08-17-02, 06:58 AM do you think duty free was a good idea? What do you think of people that go abroad to by booze cigarettes to bring back and sell? In my country and the european union, they have banned duty-free, you cant get it anymore.
Do you mean in the airfield tax free zones?
Anyway, there is something fishy about cigarette taxes. They are already high. That is because they harm your health.
OK. Why not charge 50 bucks a package? That would be good for national health. It would also lower medical costs.
But no, money goes above people.
(still left wing. :) )

Yeah...haha...I tried sending a carton of Malboro Lights to my brother in the states. Never got to him. And guess how much they cost in Korea. About...15 bucks for that carton (10 cig packs in it). I'm trying to quit smoking anyways...

I meant the cigarettes and alcohol that you can buy in airports before you come home. But it does'nt really matter, what i'm getting at - do you think if its correct for people to be allowed to go and find a better deal. Because, in Scotland, it is illegal for people to go abroad and find cigarettes for a cheaper price due to different taxation and sell em for more profit but still sell them cheaper than you would be able to buy normally. I'm guessing if you live in America this is'nt common due to the geographical location of it. I dont understand why it is illegal, because i thought the whole point of capitalism was free market and free trade but it does'nt look like it when it comes to cigarettes and alcohol. Maybe i've got the wrong end of the stick, i dont know. O.k, its legal for people to go abroad and buy them for their own 'consumption'.

The taxation of cigarettes is too high, its 90% of the actual price of them, I always thought that it was your 'right' to smoke but the government is trying to control people (in the loosest sence) into not smoking. They do harm your health but it is your decition in doing it so i suppose it was your decision to pay the tax in the first place.
I believe in tax, i think that some tax should go up but i dont think the way to gainb revenue is to place stealth tax. (still left-wing  :) )
%BlueSoulRobot% 08-17-02, 08:50 AM Hey Captain Crunch! You're alive! :D I was worried when you disappeared for so long. :( Ok, now I've got to read the post.. :)
Hmmm...they sell cigarettes online nowadays..They acquire them from South Africa, where they have the lowest cigarette taxes and duties in the world. Plus, "great quality".
What cracks me up, though, are the warnings on cigarette packages. It's like a transparent wall: it's there, but most people walk right through it. You'd think that people would get scared off by the label, but nooo, they go right ahead. :)

hey!, its nice to see some people care! actually, i was away on holiday and thats why i hadnt posted. Do you really think i would be bullied into quiting sciforums? noway. Anyways, thats besides the point.
I was recently in Luxemburg, the cigarette prices there are so low, €2,80 per pack of 20 and it doesnt seem to be illegal to advertise cigarettes there either, actually, i think they promote it, lol. :D
There really is no point in the anti-smoking labels, they should use shock tactics, like they do in ?Canada?, they print lungs n stuff on the packets of smokers and gruesom things like that. I smoke, (dont say it, i know its bad for you) and never once have i took notice of the label. I enjoy it, thats why i smoke and im planning on quiting once i've finished uni - its really hard for me to stop because all my freinds smoke n stuff.

Man, you should tell us next time you go on a trip...imaginations can run wild, y'know. :D
I'm not sure about the warnings here in Canada, being a non-smoking minor and all, but I can ask my smoking friends. :) Once in a while, they do have commercials and "government-sponsored" mass warnings on TV, complete with nasty pictures of lungs, "real life situations", and cats in gas masks. It seems that cats suffer a lot from second-hand smoke, unlike the newborns and other members of the household. lol :D
I don't know about the "planning on quitting" thing, though...isn't it supposed to be really really really hard? Not to mention mentally and physically taxing. Your body can suffer from abrupt nicotine withdrawal, and I'm not so sure about those nicotine patches and gums.

i think it will be a good test for me to stop, quitting after uni is because i think i'll see my freinds less and it will be easier to stop. don't know about the "planning on quitting" thing, though...isn't it supposed to be really really really hard?
so you think i should carry on? lol. :D
€2,80 = 1.79666 GBP on a conversion rate of: 1 EUR = 0.641664 GBP
really good price, because here it is 6.38964 EUR or 4.10 GBP or 9.83015 CAD for 20, extortionate.
anyways, i'm off to play some bass.

Thanks for the alert this time, otherwise we'll think you've been abducted by aliens..or joined the Navy...or started a rock band and is touring the UK...or fell down a hole... (lol@that last one) :D
I was wondering where you were Cap'n. Wheres Increan lately?
In Canada cigarette packages are half picture warning. We also have commercials such as the classic one with a woman smoking through a hole in her throat which was caused by smoking. Disgusting stuff.
NightFall 08-17-02, 06:43 PM i dont know about the overseas long distant fed-ex type deal.. but here in michigan, when it comes to ciggarettes (or fireworks) we drive to ohio and buy in bulk. lol..... you always know the bargian hunter cuz the little pink box on the bottom of their marlboro's says "ohio". LOL
People in Britain used to go to France to buy cheap cigs and booze
Fukushi 12-12-02, 06:06 PM anymore, and it was hard to stop, but now it's fantastic! I can smell the air again, taste the smog and hear the noize of traffic loud and clear! ;)
Greetz fukushi
What is driving the cost of cigarettes is not so much the tax as the cost of the law suits being passed on, even if the tax is high.
Captain_Crunch 12-13-02, 10:17 AM wow, thread revival.
nah, i kinda have stopped smoking i only do it on nights out now. I did stop entirely for like 2 months, but with uni breaking up and all my smoking freinds comming home; it is just too hard to not when im around them.
I cant say i feel much healthier or anything.
*edit-spelling*
Shadowstrife911 12-13-02, 04:39 PM In Canada the cigarette packs have some pretty gruesome things on them - - I really don't think people take notice of these 'shock pictures' though... most people I know barely notice them. We also have a lot of commercials, like the one Tyler pointed out with the throat-smoking lady.
Fukushi 12-13-02, 05:07 PM There's not only a Ban on smoking in public places but also a BAN on tabaco-advertising,
I think that's one of the major things that helps, because without this advertising, it doesn't get as much credibility as being 'commonly accepted'. And that's good.
I don't like smoke,.....anymore
