I ordered my modem a few days ago. I won't be online for a few weeks though. Anything anyone wants to tell me before I go and make stupid mistakes that everybody but me knows about?

I got me ADSL with Telus up here in Canada. Excellent service altogether. Although it's not uncappable like cable is you don't have to worry about the neighborhood load on your connection. Anyways...only one thing I have to say is this: the shorter the line you have from your modem to your phone jack the greater chance you have of getting that extra 5k/s out of your connection.

Thanks! I'm still green with computers, this is probably the first place I'll come when it's up.

Mke sure you're close to the centrel office of your provider. If you're 11,000 or more feet outside you're conncetion provider you're gonna get shit connection. I am 10,000 feet away and my average speed of downloads is 80k a sec. I had verizon and i was 13,000 feet away and my best..not even average..best speed was 24k a sec..see what a difference it makes.

Sargent, was your allowable bandwidth the same for both ISPs? because I can't see how 3 block lengths can make that much difference. Plus they have repeaters EVERYWHERE nowadays so distance usually isn't a big deal. I get 150k/s when I am maxed out by my ISP at 180k/s (1.5 mBit) and I am probably a good 3 miles from my server.

I am very pissed with the Verizon DSL company in general. My service was supposed to be hooked up three weeks ago, I have to wait til Tuesday since I did not complain early enough. So me advice would be, if anything is wrong start the bitchin' immediately.

They're mailing the software and stuff. I've got the modem, but waiting still for the other stuff. I was told that they would start me in the next billing period, as it would take several weeks for everythign to arrive. As far as I know, German('cause I can't remember their word) Telecom is providing the DSL, with T-Online providing acess, or something liek that.

ugggghhh rented bandwidth. I have experienced that in an ISP, and then two months after I signed up they went bankrupt.
